Despite a period of great interest in the 70's and 80's, an attempt to synthesize the visual aspects of cult in the Neolithic age has been missing. It will only be possible to overcome the present state of fragmentation of knowledge when a comprehensive catalogue of all evidence in the national territory will be available. In the meanwhile, we propose here some proposals for the ongoing debate on this topic, by considering the major female figurines from both old and recent discoveries in the italian Neolithic. The working hypotesis was to verify the recurrence of certain characteristics in style and especially in iconographies in selected chronological and cultural scenarios. We notice a strong correlation between some iconographies and certain cultures. Together with the pattern of discovery also within housing structures this evidence suggest a fruition of figurines as icons of one or more female cults celebrated not only at a domestic level.

Neolithization in the central Tyrrhenian area; the Early Neolithic settlement "La Marmotta"

The research on the first Neolithic communities of farmers, breeders, artisans and sailors documented in the territories of central-western Italy during the sixth millennium BC is still in progress . Attention is given in particular to groups settled near the Tyrrhenian coast and above all to the group of people which, during the first half of the sixth millennium, built the village of La Marmotta on the shores of the Bracciano’s Lake (Anguillara, Rome). The focus of the research is therefore devoted to the study and publication of the numerous data from the excavations that I personally conducted - in the years 1989/2009 - in the large, multi-layered, perilacustrian settlement of La Marmotta, currently submerged by the waters of the lake. This research is part of the studies relating to the various cultural facies of the Early Neolithic communities of the Mediterranean Sea and to the relationships between them. ... [more]

Sono brevemente descritti la storia del rinvenimento, la scoperta di una nuova facies culturale neolitica (la facies de La Marmotta), i dati di cronologia assoluta e relativa, le strutture e l'economia del villaggio, le imbarcazioni e l'ambiente circostante.

The exploratory dig, extending over an area of 4x4.5 meters, was carved along the SE side of the trench originally due to L. Cardini. [Show full abstract] investigated, including other levels of the initial Eneolithic, of the final Neolithic, of the recent Neolithic of Diana facies and in the style of Serra d'Alto and of the advanced phases of the Middle Neolithic (with ceramics in Cassano style and in Scaloria Bassa style) up to the levels of the initial phase of the Middle Neolithic characterized by the presence of “ceramic painted with red bands”. Sono presentati in via preliminare i risultati delle due campagne di scavo condotte nei mesi di giugno e di settembre del 2004 all’interno della Grotta della Madonna (Praia a Mare, Cosenza). Sono stati indagati i livelli di frequentazione successivi al livello US 288, attribuibile all’Eneolitico iniziale di facies Piano Conte, comprendenti altri livelli dell’Eneolitico iniziale, del Neolitico finale, del Neolitico recente di facies Diana e nello stile di Serra d’Alto, delle fasi avanzate del Neolitico Medio ( con ceramiche negli stili di Cassano e della Scaloria Bassa) fino ai livelli del Neolitico Medio iniziale caratterizzati dalla presenza di “ceramica dipinta a bande rosse”.
