In this paper we present a method to dimension the drivetrain of an explanatory plug-in hybrid electric vehicle and determine the optimum between emissions and costs on the basis of the WLTP. For this a validated tool for automated powertrain dimensioning has been developed, which is described in this paper. Due to the introduction of the WLTP in 2019 and its regulations for calculating combined carbon dioxide emissions for plug-in hybrid electric vehicles are considered to determine an optimal electric range. By taking into account the catalog of requirements, the costs for hybridizing a vehicle (battery, electric motor, power electronics) and the emissions minimization potential through electrification, an optimal battery size and thus, an optimal electric range for a vehicle can be calculated. For the given middle class vehicle and a utility factor derived from the ECE R101 the optimal electric range results to be between 24 and 40 kilometers. This tool enables OEMs to dimension a hybrid vehicle powertrain solely by basic vehicle parameters and a catalog of requirements for a given driving cycle in early stages of development, which reduces costs, development time and the amount of testing.
