1. Introduction
The Pilates method is a complex system of physical exercises through which the body works, from the deepest
muscles to the peripheral function, exercises in which both the mind, the body and the respiratory function intervene.
Nowadays, the exercises have been developed using elements such as balls, elastic rubber bands, extensors and even
weights. This technique can be adapted to any discipline or activity you carry out during the day. As a result of the
systematic practice of physical exercises, Pilates helps to improve mobility of the spine and the elasticity of the
posterior thigh muscles, as well as static and dynamic balance. Interest in the Pilates exercise continues to grow due
to the current social tendency to favor a beautiful appearance and a lean body shape. Moreover, the Pilates exercise
recognizes the human body and mind as one and cultivates them mutually and organically to make the body supple
and balanced and to strengthen the small muscles, making the body line beautiful. In addition, Pilates exercise is a full
body exercise program that strengthens the muscles of the deepest part of the body while balancing the muscles and
helps one achieve a proper posture with proper alignment of the body without causing bodily pain. After the Pilates
exercise, the Pilates exercise program has been shown to have an excellent effect on activating the core of the body,
which improves body stability and increases the inherent receptive senses to adjust balance, posture, and movement.
Moreover, it improves functional movement, which facilitates the appearance of the appropriate motor response and
effectively improves the overall body function. Functional movement refers to the physical ability to assume an
efficient posture by properly coordinating mobility and stability while executing a basic movement model.

2. Material and methods
1. Research hypothesis
It can be stated as follows: suppose that by using Pilates programs, you can improve your body balance and
stability.
2. Motivation to achieve the theme
I decided to approach this topic, because despite its appearance, Pilates is a complex discipline that gives the
practitioner many benefits such as:
• increased lung capacity,
• improving the blood circulation
• improvement of body balance and stability
In the last year I was offered the opportunity to teach this method, having to learn and put into practice a wide range
of ways to practice it. Therefore, based on this experience, I have found that Pilates has movements that offer both an
excellent physical tone and a good mental and emotional state. This fact contributed to the decision to study the Pilates
method in this work.
3. Purpose and tasks of the research
The purpose of the research is to establish the appropriate structures, requirements and methodology for Pilates
meetings. The objective of this work is to observe, over a period of time, that the body balance and stability is
improved, following the systematic practice of Pilates exercises and including aerobic effort.
4. The tasks of the research
• Studying the topic in the specialized literature;
• Initial testing of Pilates trainees;
• Applying the means in the training program;
• Final testing of the batch included in the research.
5. Research methods used
The following research methods were used in this study:
• Methods with a high degree of generalization (historical method);
• Particular investigation methods (observation and experimental method);
• Methods of analysis and interpretation (statistical method, mathematical method).
6. Tests and measurements carried out
In order to evaluate the amplitude of the movement under the conditions of the research, it was necessary to evaluate
these qualities according to objective criteria through measurements expressed in number of repetitions, imbalances
and centimeters.
7. Test of balance and body stability
On the longitudinal axis of the bench of the gymnastics turned, the performer standing on the right foot, bends the

free leg and grasps his paw with the same hand, the raised free arm, which can be used to restore balance.
- It is required to keep the balance for one minute in the position described.
- At each loss of balance, the test is interrupted and a penalty is applied.
After each interruption, the subject will be helped to resume the initial position.
The result: the number of extra moves to keep the balance (not the falls) for a minute is gathered. Example: for 3
movements 3 points will be awarded.
If the subject interrupts 15 times in the first 30 seconds he is considered unable to perform the test and is interrupted.

In the experimental group, the arithmetic mean at the initial test is 3,375 cm, while at the final test it is 1,875 cm,
the progress being 1.5 cm.
In the experimental group, we obtained values of 3 imbalances at the initial testing and 2 imbalances at the final
testing, the progress being 1 imbalance. Comparing the results obtained from these tests it can be seen that at the final
test the values are lower while observing an improvement of the balance. The experimental group having a better
degree of homogeneity at the final test.
4. Conclusions
Functional movement refers to the physical ability to assume an efficient posture by properly coordinating mobility
and stability while executing a basic movement model. To achieve this, it is necessary to sufficiently provide many
factors such as stability of the core and range of motion. Physical stability, which provides control of the body in a
balanced manner, means the activation of the muscles in the core of the body.
These exercises have multiple positive valences and beneficial effects manifested both physically and mentally.
It is known and demonstrated that through Pilates exercises you obtain superior results on the balance test. This
was also the case in the present experiment, in which the final results on the balance test were higher than the initial
ones, due to an appropriate dosage.

Abdominal muscles represent some of the most important ones, practically making possible the link between the upper and lower portions of the body. It is not by chance, that in Oriental philosophy, the area where these muscles are located is considered the most important area ("hara" to Japanese, "dan tian" to Chinese). Therefore, a well-developed abdominal musculature may be a protective "fortification" for this area of the body. In this article we will identify ways in which abdominal muscles can be improved by using Pilates exercises. The elaborated paper aims at improving the abdominal muscles. For this we have developed a set of appropriate exercises to achieve improved results. We then applied these to a target group and presented the initial and final results. In conclusion, you will find an interpretation of the results. Research hypothesis. It can be stated as follows: assume that using Pilates programs, we can achieve better toning of the abdominal muscles. Material and method. In order to evaluate the amplitude of the movement under the conditions of the research, it was necessary to assess these qualities according to objective criteria by measurements expressed in number of repetitions, imbalances and centimeters. Results. In the experimental group, values of 9 reps were obtained for the initial testing and 12.5 reps for the final test, with the progress being 3.5 reps. Conclusions. By comparing the results obtained from the two tests, it can be concluded that the final test values are higher, at the same time observing an improvement, the experimental group having a better degree of homogeneity in final testing.

Body balance is defined as the capacity that allows you to be aware and control your body posture in the air in order to maintain orthostatic position in statics and dynamics. Posture reflects general body balance, therefore it can be used as a balance assessment instrument. Our paper focuses on the aspects regarding static balance manifestation in sporty and unsporty children, aged 10 to 12. Assessing this ability with the help of posturography revealed differences in values between the two groups included in the study. The research was based on protocols with registrations of standard duration postural stability, with and without visual control. Following the interpretation of the results, we underline the fact that the subjects in the sporty group obtained higher values compared to the unsporty group, due to an increased muscular development and to the balance improvement exercices during the specific training.

Background: The aging process results in a number of functional (e.g., deficits in balance and strength/power performance), neural (e.g., loss of sensory/motor neurons), muscular (e.g., atrophy of type-II muscle fibers in particular), and bone-related (e.g., osteoporosis) deteriorations. Traditionally, balance and/or lower extremity resistance training were used to mitigate these age-related deficits. However, the effects of resistance training are limited and poorly translate into improvements in balance, functional tasks, activities of daily living, and fall rates. Thus, it is necessary to develop and design new intervention programs that are specifically tailored to counteract age-related weaknesses. Recent studies indicate that measures of trunk muscle strength (TMS) are associated with variables of static/dynamic balance, functional performance, and falls (i.e., occurrence, fear, rate, and/or risk of falls). Further, there is preliminary evidence in the literature that core strength training (CST) and Pilates exercise training (PET) have a positive influence on measures of strength, balance, functional performance, and falls in older adults. Objective: The objectives of this systematic literature review are: (a) to report potential associations between TMS/trunk muscle composition and balance, functional performance, and falls in old adults, and (b) to describe and discuss the effects of CST/PET on measures of TMS, balance, functional performance, and falls in seniors. Data sources: A systematic approach was employed to capture all articles related to TMS/trunk muscle composition, balance, functional performance, and falls in seniors that were identified using the electronic databases PubMed and Web of Science (1972 to February 2013). Study selection: A systematic approach was used to evaluate the 582 articles identified for initial review. Cross-sectional (i.e., relationship) or longitudinal (i.e., intervention) studies were included if they investigated TMS and an outcome-related measure of balance, functional performance, and/or falls. In total, 20 studies met the inclusionary criteria for review. Study appraisal and synthesis methods: Longitudinal studies were evaluated using the Physiotherapy Evidence Database (PEDro) scale. Effect sizes (ES) were calculated whenever possible. For ease of discussion, the 20 articles were separated into three groups [i.e., cross-sectional (n = 6), CST (n = 9), PET (n = 5)]. Results: The cross-sectional studies reported small-to-medium correlations between TMS/trunk muscle composition and balance, functional performance, and falls in older adults. Further, CST and/or PET proved to be feasible exercise programs for seniors with high-adherence rates. Age-related deficits in measures of TMS, balance, functional performance, and falls can be mitigated by CST (mean strength gain = 30 %, mean effect size = 0.99; mean balance/functional performance gain = 23 %, mean ES = 0.88) and by PET (mean strength gain = 12 %, mean ES = 0.52; mean balance/functional performance gain = 18 %, mean ES = 0.71). Limitations: Given that the mean PEDro quality score did not reach the predetermined cut-off of ≥6 for the intervention studies, there is a need for more high-quality studies to explicitly identify the relevance of CST and PET to the elderly population. Conclusions: Core strength training and/or PET can be used as an adjunct or even alternative to traditional balance and/or resistance training programs for old adults. Further, CST and PET are easy to administer in a group setting or in individual fall preventive or rehabilitative intervention programs because little equipment and space is needed to perform such exercises.

Background: Pilates exercises help stabilize the vertebral segments by recruiting the abdominal and spinal muscles. Pilates training may increase joint stability and improve neuromuscular efficiency (NME). Objective: This study aimed to evaluate NME of the multifidus (MU) muscle through electromyography (EMG) analysis and torque test, applied to practitioners and non-practitioners of Pilates. Methods: Participants included thirty women: Pilates practitioners (n = 15) and non-practitioners (n = 15). They were tested for trunk extension. Their right and left MU muscles were submitted to EMG to estimate NME. Results concerning torque, EMG, and NME from all participants were compared. Results: Statistical analysis concerning isometric torque peak (p = 0.0275) and NME (p = 0.0062) showed significant difference (Student t test; p < 0.05) between practitioners and control. No significant difference (p = 0.3387) in EMG was observed. Conclusion: Our results suggest Pilates exercises is effective in training spinal muscles to improve NME in women.
