Rebound Training Modifies Body Composition, Muscular Strength and Bone Health Indicators in Adult Women

Authors:

Abstract

Rebound training is an alternative exercise performed on a trampoline that is becoming very popular. In this sense, the aim of this study was to investigate and compare the effects of rebound exercise performed on land and in water on anthropometry, muscular strength, bone mineral density, and bone remodeling. Twenty-seven women (33.9 ± 3.3 years) were divided into two groups; rebound training in water (G1, n = 14) and rebound training on land (G2, n = 13). Each group trained twice a week for sixteen weeks. Percentage of fat (%F), lean body mass (LBM), body mass index (BMI), hip waist ratio (HWR), one repetition maximum (1-RM), twenty repetition maximum (20-M), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), bone specific alkaline phosphatase (bone ALP), acid phosphatase (ACP), tartrate resistant acid phosphatase (FTR), lumbar bone mineral density (lumbar DMO), and femoral neck bone mineral density (fneckDMO) were measured before and after the protocol. The Shapiro-Wilk test was used to verify data normality and the Wilcoxon and Mann-Whitney tests were used to compare the anthropometric, muscular strength, bone mineral density, and bone remodeling markers (p < 0.05). Reductions in LBM and %F were found. Muscular strength increased in the 1-RM and 20-RM tests for both groups. ALP activity was reduced and increases in bone ALP, ACP, and FTR were found for both groups. The fneckDMO improved in both groups while lumbar DMO increased in the G2. The findings suggest that rebound training performed in the water and on land efficient for producing improvements in body composition, muscular strength, and bone health.

... Researchers conducted a study to investigate whether rebound training alters body composition in adult women. The study results indicate that both water-based and land-based rebound training are effective in enhancing body composition [14]. ...
... The results indicated a decrease in alkaline phosphatase (ALP) and an increase in bone ALP, acid phosphatase, and tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase for both groups. Additionally, femur neck bone mineral density improved in both groups, while lumbar bone mineral density increased specifically in group 2 (land group) following 16 weeks of training twice a week [14]. In 2023, a study concluded that significant reductions were noted in both systolic and diastolic blood pressure values, alongside improvements in lipid and glucose profiles. ...
... Malysz et al. investigated whether rebound training affects bone health indicators in adult women. The study findings revealed a notable improvement in muscular strength as assessed by the 1-RM and 20-RM tests in both the rebound training on land and rebound training in the water groups, following a 16-week training program conducted twice a week [14]. ...

The term "trampoline" was coined in 1969, introducing a dynamic feedback mechanism for exercise. Rebounding exercise on a mini-trampoline utilizes an elastic surface supported by springs and gravity, potentially reducing cumulative trauma from repetitive loading. This type of physical activity provides enjoyable and engaging exercise for adolescents, especially those who are overweight, thereby reducing the likelihood of injuries associated with exercise. Mini-trampoline exercises enhance blood circulation, oxygen delivery, and bone health, impacting lower limb strength, balance, motor performance, blood glucose levels, executive function, physiological markers, and overall quality of life. The study focused on examining the overall impact of rebounding exercises in the field of rehabilitation. Its main goal was to assess how these exercises affect the rehabilitation process and different health measures. By investigating the comprehensive influence of rebounding exercises, the study aimed to determine their effectiveness in aiding physical and functional recovery, targeting specific rehabilitation goals, and enhancing overall health outcomes. We systematically reviewed medical literature databases such as PubMed, MEDLINE, Scopus, Google Scholar, and EBSCO. We included research articles, systematic reviews, meta-analyses, clinical trials, case studies, and observational studies published in English up to 10 years before the review's cutoff in December 2023. We considered participants across all age groups. Articles not in English were excluded from the review. The outcome measures were body composition, waist-hip ratio, Bruininks-Oseretsky test for motor proficiency, reaction time, insulin resistance, lipid profile, blood cholesterol level, forced expiratory volume in one second, and forced vital capacity, bone health indicators, blood lactate level, balance, strength: repetitive maximum, brief pain inventory (short form). A total of 11 reports met these criteria. In conclusion, this review provides a thorough look into the use, challenges, and future potential of rebound exercises in rehabilitation and fitness. Despite their wide-ranging applications, issues such as insufficient research, equipment variability, and safety concerns persist. Advancement requires more research for evidence-based guidelines, improved equipment design and safety measures, and collaboration among researchers, clinicians, and manufacturers. Overcoming challenges and fostering innovation can establish rebound exercises as a valuable tool in rehabilitation and fitness.
... When reviewing the relevant literature, it is stated that in the study conducted by Aalizadeh et al., a statistically significant difference was found in body fat percentages between the experimental and control groups (Aalizadeh et al., 2016). On the other hand, in the study by Filho et al., which used mini trampolines, there was no statistically significant difference in body mass index measurements between the experimental and control groups (Malysz et al., 2019). According to the study conducted by Alonso et al. on mini trampoline exercises in young women, comparing the pre-and postintervention body mass index values of the experimental and control groups, no significant difference was detected (Alonso et al., 2005). ...

The definition of osteoporosis was originally formulated at a conference of the World Health Organization (WHO) in 1993 as ‘a systemic skeletal disease characterized by decreased bone mass and altered micro-architecture of bone tissue, leading to enhanced bone fragility and risk of fractures’. Osteoporosis is characterized by low bone mineral density (BMD) and loss of the structural and bio-mechanical properties that are required to maintain bone homeostasis. This review aims to address the currently available options in prevention and treatment of osteoporosis. Management of osteoporosis includes non-pharmacological treatment - diet rich of calcium and vitamin D, healthy lifestyle, proper exercise plan, and pharmacological therapy. Combination of non-pharmacological and pharmacological treatment options have to be considered for prevention of osteoporosis and minimization of the risk of fractures. Given the heterogeneity of osteoporosis syndrome and lack of significant number of comparative studies, the choice of a pharmacological agents should be individualized.

Physical exercise is an important stimulus for osteoporosis prevention and treatment. However, it is not clear yet which modality would be better to stimulate bone metabolism and enhance physical function of postmenopausal women. This review paper aims to summarize and update present knowledge on the effects of different kinds of aquatic and ground physical exercises on bone metabolism and physical function of postmenopausal women. Moderate to intense exercises, performed in a high speed during short intervals of time, in water or on the ground, can be part of a program to prevent and treat postmenopausal osteoporosis. Mechanical vibration has proven to be beneficial for bone microarchitecture, improving bone density and bone strength, as well as increasing physical function. Although impact exercises are recognized as beneficial for the stimulation of bone tissue, other variables such as muscle strength, type of muscle contraction, duration and intensity of exercises are also determinants to induce changes in bone metabolism of postmenopausal women. Not only osteoanabolic exercises should be recommended; activities aimed to develop muscle strength and body balance and improve the proprioception should be encouraged to prevent falls and fractures.

Heart rate frequency in immersed individuals over different water temperatures Purpose of this study was to analyze the heart rate behavior of immersed individuals in the vertical position, at a depth between the xiphoid process and the shoulders, in three water temperatures (27, 30 and 33o C). Sample was composed of 14 male subjects aged 18 to 35, who practice water activities. Heart rate was monitored with Polar heart beat sensors, Beat model. The heart rate behavior was determined through the existing variations between the individual's heart rate in the vertical position outside the water and during immersion, at rest. The analysis of the data was conducted using descriptive statistics, variance analysis (ANOVA), with Bonferroni's post-hoc test (p≤ 0,05). Bradycardia was observed during immersion in all three water temperatures. The average bradycardia at 33o C was 17,85±10,67 beat.min-1; at 30o C, it was 24,14±11,16 beat.min-1; at 27o C, it was 33,75±11,27 beat.min-1. The differences between the averages were only statistically significant between 27o C and 33o C. Therefore, during water immersion in temperatures varying between 27 and 33o C, bradycardia tends to increase with the reduction of water temperature.

Recent reports reveal increasing complexity of mechanisms underlying the bone sparing effects of sex steroids. This review focuses on mechanisms by which sex steroids attenuate endocortical and trabecular adult bone turnover, perhaps their most important property as bone mass regulators. Clearly, estrogen withdrawal increases osteoclast number and bone resorption; however, important open questions are the extent to which osteoblasts and their precursors are involved, and the relative contributions of the RANK/RANKL/OPG system, Fas ligand and Runx2. In addition to reviewing these aspects of estrogen action, we also discuss proskeletal effects of androgens on the adult male skeleton, including aromatization to estrogens and male-specific mechanisms. Detailed understanding of skeletal site- and gender-dependent mechanisms by which sex steroids protect the adult skeleton will provide the foundation for improved risk assessment, prevention and management of osteoporosis.

The effectiveness of a water-based exercise (WE) program and a walking on land (WL) program was evaluated in older women (aged 62-65 years). Fifty healthy sedentary women were randomly assigned to sedentary (S), WE and WL groups. The two groups were exercised for 12 weeks at 70% of the age-predicted maximum heart rate (HR). The subjects were evaluated before and after the training period, and measurements of bodyweight, HR at rest, maximum aerobic power (VO(2max) mL/kg per min) and neuromuscular performance (upper and lower body strength; agility; upper and lower body flexibility) were included. After training, bodyweight was unchanged in both programs. The WE decreased the HR at rest by 10%. Both WE and WL enhanced VO(2max) by 42% and 32%, respectively. However, for the WE group the VO(2max) values were significantly higher compared with the WL group (P < 0.05). All neuromuscular parameters improved after exercise, but only the WE group showed a significant improvement on the upper body strength and lower body flexibility. Besides, the upper and lower body strength and upper and lower body flexibility were significantly higher in the WE group compared with the WL group (P < 0.05), respectively. Current results indicate that the WE and WL programs improved the cardiorespiratory and neuromuscular fitness of older women. Furthermore, when the effectiveness of the training programs were compared, it was verified that the WE program was more powerful in inducing changes in physical fitness versus the WL program.
