What do paramedics do?
Emergency!
Save lives!
Get them to
the hospital!
Heroes?
Ok, so…what do they actually do?
Lots of
other
things
that we
don’t
prepare
them
for…
Regional context matters
Assessment
Practice
Competency
Framework
Curriculum
Placement
Certification
Assumptions
?
?
?
?
Let’s challenge those assumptions
Why might this be?
The role of paramedics is unclear
Not entirely sure who we are
Paramedic practice is dynamic
Paramedic practice is complex
As a result it can be difficult to describe
We lack the scientific means to examine
our practice
We don’t like to change
How can we change this?
Define our role
Explore who we are
Embrace the complex and dynamic nature of
our practice
Develop better ways to describe our practice
Improve our scientific means to examine our
practice
Accept that change is inevitable
How can we change this?
Define our role
Explore who we are
Embrace the complex and dynamic nature of
our practice
Develop better ways to describe our practice
Improve our scientific means to examine our
practice
Accept that change is inevitable
In other words –social contexts matter
In other words –relationships matter
So to recap
Current education ignores large aspects of
practice
Likely because practice is dynamic and
complex
As a result it can be difficult to describe
We need better ways to describe practice
A systems approach to clinical practice is one
proposed solution
Stay tuned, we’re working on it!
Thank you!
