Childhood Gender Identity Measure

Abstract

Measure of gender identity for elementary school aged children, including subscales assessing (a) gender typicality, (b) satisfaction with gender, gender roles, and gender typicality, and (c) perceived pressure to conform to gender roles from parents, friends, peers, and siblings. More information about the measure is available in Patterson, M. M. (2012). Self-perceived gender typicality, gender-typed attributes, and gender stereotype endorsement in elementary-school-aged children. Sex Roles, 67, 422-434. https://doi.org/10.1007/s11199-012-0184-9

Part 2 (Gender Satisfaction) items 11-20:
Reverse-coded items: 12, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19

When girls [boys] want to do something that boys [girls] usually do (but girls [boys] don’t do),
sometimes people might not like it. If you wanted to do something that boys [girls] usually do
(but girls [boys] don’t do), how much do you think these people would be upset or unhappy?
21. How much do you think your parents would be upset or unhappy?
22. How much do you think your friends would be upset or unhappy?
23. How much do you think other kids at school would be upset or unhappy?
24. How much do you think your siblings would be upset or unhappy?
When girls [boys] want to do something that boys [girls] usually do (but girls [boys] don’t do),

Girls’ Version

Instructions: Some things are more typical of the groups they belong to than other things—they
are better examples of the group. For example, a robin or a pigeon is a more typical bird than a
penguin or an ostrich. People also have ideas about what girls and boys are like and who is a
typical girl or boy. We want to know how you feel about yourself, and how much you are like
most girls or most boys. For each of the questions, I will read a sentence, and you tell me if it’s
true for you or not true for you. You can say that it’s really true, sort of true, sort of not true, or
really not true.

There are some things that boys do more often than girls, and some things that girls do more
often than boys. Sometimes parents or friends might think the things you want to do are a good
idea or a not so good idea. Some kids feel like they get a lot of pressure to act a certain way
from their parents or friends. We want to know if you feel this way or not. I will ask you about
how different people would act if you wanted to do certain things. If a question doesn’t apply to
you (like if you don’t have brothers or sisters), just let me know and we will skip those questions.
