Abstract

There are many theological themes that appear in the Old Testament in Israel’s relationship with Yahweh. These themes contain multiple emphases throughout different times in Israel’s history that can richly inform how the contemporary believer is to relate with God. At times though, these varied themes can seem to cross in opposition with one another. Having a framework of theological diversity is helpful in untangling potential theological contradictions that can otherwise threaten to strangle the well-being of the believer trying to live faithfully in light of the whole canon of Scripture. Insights from the French anthropologist Gilbert Durand on the psyche’s unconscious structures of the imaginary seem to be of help in this endeavor. They can aid the contemporary believer’s journey in discerning when to take the initiative in acting on behalf of God, when to be expectantly passive while waiting for God to fulfill his promises, and when to engage in a joint decision-making process with him. They can also aid the believer toward both psychological and spiritual maturity as well as provide help in navigating different seasons in one’s spiritual journey.

... According to Bellehumeur (2023), Durand's framework of the imaginary has potential to aid mental health in various areas such as: (a) resilience and spirituality (Bellehumeur, 2011;Nguyen et al., 2018); (b) well-being, virtues and personal strengths ; (c) the paradoxical dimension of boundaries in psychotherapy, theology, and anthropology (Bellehumeur, 2020;Bellehumeur & Chambers, 2017;Kam & Bellehumeur, 2019, 2020; and (d) various constructs associated with interpersonal styles as well as marital, family and psychotherapeutic relationships (Bellehumeur, 2014a(Bellehumeur, , 2014bBellehumeur & Carignan, 2018;Bellehumeur et al., 2013), group dynamics and continuing education for adults (Laprée, 2004(Laprée, , 2013 as well as eco-training and nature relatedness (Andreux, 2005;Cottereau, 1999Cottereau, , 2001Houdayer, 2014). ...

Political polarization has been growing in many countries, including the United States, within recent years. Scholars note how, if not addressed, growing trends can compromise fundamental pillars of a functioning democratic society. While efforts have grown in researching how integrative complexity can successfully mitigate polarizing tensions in political divides, there is a lack of scholarly attention on how conscious and unconscious dimensions of integrative complexity affect such processes. This article proposes a framework to ground future research in this direction as well as inform depolarizing interventions on this topic.

Integration of theology and psychology is needed for more efficient services for the congregation. However, is this kind of integration familiar in Indonesia? This article seeks to examine the development of research on the integration of theology and psychology in Indonesia from 2003-2023. The approach used is Systematic Literature Review (SLR) with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA) method. As a result, 17 articles were found that met the requirements for review and discussed the integration of theology and psychology. The authors come from 15 educational and service institutions, both ecumenical and evangelical. The branch of theology that is most studied is biblical theology, while the branch of psychology that is most studied is developmental psychology. The most dominant research synthesis is the integration of practical theology and developmental psychology. The amount of research on the integration of theology and psychology in Indonesia in the last two decades is still relatively low.
... If the mystical elements are overemphasized with low skills of mastery from the heroic elements, anxiety can result in the relational bond. What is required is a synthetic imaginary structure that has a good union of both 3 . In terms of empirical research, studies show that highly conscientious individuals are more likely to spend time mastering challenging tasks 13 which is a prerequisite to flow that is associated with the Heroic Imaginary Structure. ...

There has been much progress in the scientific study of wisdom on both conceptual and empirical fronts in the past few decades. Despite all the progress being made, there are still gaps that can be filled to provide even more explanatory power and coherence. Although academic discourse on wisdom has included the ability to integrate issues in a complex manner, there is still room for improved theorizing on wisdom’s integrative complexity. Since integrative complexity has both conscious and unconscious dimensions, including the latter in discussions on wisdom will add a valuable aspect to its conceptualization. This article will argue how unconscious integrative complexity is the variable in wisdom’s conceptual equation that involves paradox, which is a well-known sign of wisdom. Explanations contrasting conscious integrative complexity and unconscious integrative complexity in reference to wisdom will be discussed. Then, the Archetypal Test of the Nine Elements will be proposed as a testing instrument to operationalize unconscious integrative complexity. After the conceptualization and operationalization are worked through, we will conclude with a couple examples to illustrate our reflections.

Proverbs 22:6 is generally understood as providing assurance of the good results when the education process was carried out properly. However, the reality is that there is good people who is basicly not highly educated, on the other hand, there is people who is well educated but having bad behavior. The purpose of this study was to explore the true meaning of good education for young people. The approach taken was exegesis to Proverbs 22:6 by analyzing the lexical, context and syntax of the Hebrew grammar. The result of the analysis showed that good education did not always end up good results because it was influenced by many factors in education process.

The relation between individual differences in personality and differences in developmental maturity was studied by relating observations of personality by multiple, independent judges to level of ego development. The personality characteristics of longitudinally followed Ss (104 at age 14; 98 at age 23) were evaluated by the California Adult Q-Set (CAQ); ego level was evaluated by the Washington University Sentence Completion Test of Ego Development (SCT). A priori personality dimensions—consisting of CAQ items for which a common developmental pathway was expected—were constructed and related to the SCT: (a) Ego-resiliency and interpersonal integrity were associated with increasing ego development, (b) conformity was associated with the Conformist level and, unexpectedly, to the Conscientious level, (c) need regulation was associated with the Conscientious level, and (d) self-case and expressiveness–playfulness were not associated with ego level.

A rapidly growing number of working professionals, academic communities, and businesses have applied the Enneagram personality system of nine types to enhance psychological growth in their personal and professional lives. However, there are no existing studies that measure the effects of the application of Enneagram training programs to promote ego development. This study examined if ego development took place among individuals enrolled in Enneagram training programs in the Narrative Tradition. Two groups of participants (N = 122) were assessed using the Washington University Sentence Completion Test (WUSCT) at baseline (pretest) before the training began and then again 18 months later (posttest); one of the groups participated in Enneagram Intensive training programs (n = 73) and the other group participated in introductory Enneagram trainings (n = 49). Data revealed an advancement in ego development among some of the participants who received at least 40–50 h of training. The findings suggest that Enneagram Intensive trainings may be beneficial for promoting psychological growth and ego development. Clinical applications and future research directions are discussed.

This article empirically investigates two alternative, competing hypotheses regarding human attachment patterns and attachment patterns with respect to people's spiritual experiences of relationship with God. The correspondence model posits that attachment patterns with humans correspond to, or are reflected in attachment patterns in individuals' experiences of God. The compensation model, in contrast proposes that attachment patterns with humans do not correspond to God attachment patterns presumably because God functions as a substitute attachment figure for those with insecure human attachments. Overall, the evidence has been somewhat mixed, with some findings supporting correspondence and some supporting compensation. It is argued here that this is due to limitations of the conceptual models, more specifically, lack of clarity regarding the compensation model, and the limited way in which spirituality and religiousness has been conceptualized and measured. We propose a conceptual distinction between implicit spiritual functioning and explicit spiritual functioning, which reflect two separate ways of knowing and processing emotional information: explicit knowledge and implicit relational knowledge (Stern et al., 1998). Based on this distinction, we propose a conceptual model arguing that correspondence operates at implicit levels of spiritual experience, and that human attachment patterns are not associated with explicit spiritual functioning. Results overall provided strong support for this model.

This study examines the links between the imaginary of young Quebecers (9 to 12 years old), their interpersonal styles (competition with self, competition against others, collaboration), and their socio-economic status, by using the AT.9 (Archetypal Test with 9 Elements). In this test, developed within the framework of Gilbert Durand's "Anthropological Structures of the Imaginary", participants are asked to draw, using nine symbolic elements, and then write a story based on their drawing. Drawings/stories are later categorized in one of three mythical universes: heroic, mystical, or synthetic. The results obtained from 109 young Quebecers are somewhat comparable to those obtained with thousands of European adults. Competition with self, collaboration, and a higher socioeconomic standing are associated with a more elaborated mythical (i.e. synthetic) universe. The educational and clinical implications of these results are discussed.

This article reports the findings of a national survey study of school counseling professionals to determine if higher ego development contributed to a lower degree of burnout. Although the primary path analysis model tested did not fit the data observed, a significant positive relationship indicated that participants scoring at higher levels of ego functioning also scored at higher levels of personal accomplishment (1 dimension of their level of burnout). Implications of the findings are discussed.
