A CONTRIBUTION TO KNOWLEDGE OF BALKAN LEPIDOPTERA: SOME NEW AND RARE SPECIES FOR ALBANIA AND NORTH MACEDONIA (MACROLEPIDOPTERA)

Authors:
  • National Museum of Natural History, Bulgarian Academy of Sciences

Abstract

Data for 45 nocturnal Lepidoptera species collected mainly in June-August 2018 by the authors are presented. The majority of reported species are from Albania, from where six genera and 19 species are reported for the first time. Seventeen other species are reported for the second time for Albania or are confirmed for the country. Three species are new for the North Macedonia (formerly known as the yugoslav Republic of Macedonia). Two other species are reported for the second time for that country. Reported species and collecting localities are illustrated in colour, when necessary with genitalia, including everted vesicas.

Introduction
Survey of Lepidoptera in the southern Balkans, and especially in Albania, is
ongoing. Results of trips from September to November have been published
(Beshkov & Nahirnić, 2019) and results of a trip in May-June, with C. W. Plant,
P. Jakšić and A. King, will be published soon. A paper concerning the Pyraloidea
is also in preparation (C. W. Plant et al., in prep.).
This present paper reports the results of five collecting trips to Albania in
June, July and August 2018 by the authors, as well as some additional results
from 2016 and 2017. Additional data from an expedition during August 2018
with C. W. Plant and his colleagues will also be published separately. In 2018
we extended research to new parts of the country, mostly high mountain areas.
The Albanian Lepidoptera fauna, particularly moths, still remains poorly
explored, although in the last three years we have reported more than 120 new
macrolepidoptera species for the country. After 2019, the number of the possible
new species for the country is expected to decrease markedly, but there are large
areas without any data or with old records only. Some species, recorded in only
a few localities, may be widespread. The lack of native researchers in Albania
is unfortunate as is the fact that recent research by foreign workers remains
unpublished.
Collecting methods are described in details in Beshkov & Nahirnić (2018a,
2018b, 2019). Genitalia slides of Nola, Meganola and Eilema rungsi were
photographed by Dr. B. Zlatkov using Carl Zeiss Jena Amplival Microscope.
All material published here is deposited in the collection of Stoyan Beshkov in
the National Museum of Natural History, Sofia (NMNHS).

Phyllophila obliterata (Rambur, 1833) is reported in error from Ardenica

viscosa (Freyer, [1831]). The specimen illustrated in the same article (Plate 13:
6) as Lithophane socia (Hufnagel, 1766) from Starë is Lithophane semibrunnea
(Haworth, 1809) which is also new for Albania (genitalia checked).

Data for 14 genera and 52 Noctuoidea species, new for Albania, collected at light during 2016 and 2017 in the central and southern areas are reported here. One more genus and four other species are proved as a part of the Albanian fauna. 51 species, including widespread and common taxa, are reported for the second time for Albania. Some of the species, including † and ‡ genitalia and their habitats are illustrated. One map and 77 pictures of insects, genitalia and habitats are figured. Introduction: Without any doubt, concerning the nocturnal Lepidoptera, Albania is still a poorely explored country in comparison with most others in Europe. At present there is no active native lepidopterologist collecting at light, and the country has been neglected by foreign scientists and collectors, though it inhabits an outstanding high biological diversity. Albania is a mountainous country; overgrazing and deforestration present a problem in upland areas but industrial and intensive agricultural areas are confined to the lowlands. Collecting in Albania is not forbidden and a permit is necessary only for protected areas and for protected species. Whilst collecting at lamps, which are visible from long distance, we never have been checked by police or local authorities. Roads are from normal to very bad, often it can be a great mistake if you follow your GPS navigator or map in mountain areas as the road can be transformed into a path or simply disappear. However, even in such places you can see houses, people and livestock and with the exceptions that apply in all countries, the Albanian people are friendly. Some years ago, after the end of communist rule, it was a "sport" for young people to steal from foreigners. The senior author was a victim of such theft; a 23 kg generator was stolen from the car when three of us were nearby. We were told that this time a young man could not get married if he had not robbed someome! Now the situation is better. In 2016 we even left the car with open windows even in the towns, but in 2017 a light trap and a 30 m cable were stolen twice, and once in early morning, someone threw and hit the van with stones when we were sleeping inside. This however can not spoil our best impression and feelings to Albania and Albanians and we consist to continue intensively our research there the coming years.

Cidaria avetianae Vardikian, 1974 is synonymized with P. unicata (Guenée, 1858) (syn. n.), Cidaria unicata centralisata Staudinger, 1892 is raised from subspecies (of P. unicata) to species rank (stat. n.), and P. tangaba (Wiltshire, 1952) is transferred from Catarhoe to the genus Protorhoe (comb. n.). Two species are described as new to the science from Turkey: P. drechseli sp. n. and P. beshkovi sp. n. As result, the number of species in thegenus Protorhoe was raised from six to nine.

Abstract: This article is the result of a collecting trip of the senior author together with S. Abadjiev in Albania during 11.-18. April 1994 and a critical study of the collection of Lepidoptera in the Natural History Museum of Tirana. 8 genera and 32 species are new, many others are confirmed for the fauna of Albania. For all of the species mentioned here, all known localities in Albania are given using the available literature about Albania after Rebel & Zerny (1931). Illustrations of the male and female genitalia as well as photographs of some interesting species are given.
