Abstract. Information on the distribution of Leptoglossus occidentalis in Europe is
summarized. The presence of the species in Ireland is conrmed. Records of L. occidentalis
on the Isle of Man are reported.
Key words: Hemiptera, invasive species.
The aim of this note is to provide an updated and summarized list of data on the
distribution of Leptoglossus occidentalis Heidemann, 1910 in Europe. Hereinafter, the rst
publications about records of the species in the respective countries are listed.
Since its rst reported appearance in Europe in 1999 (Taylor et al. 2001; Tescari 2001;
Villa et al. 2001), L. occidentalis, a highly dispersible Nearctic coreid native to western North
America, has been reported from the following European countries:
Albania, Austria, Belgium, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, the Czech
Republic, Denmark, France (including the island of Corsica), Georgia, Germany, Greece
(including the islands of Corfu and Crete), Hungary, Ireland, Italy (including the islands
of Sardinia and Sicily), Kosovo, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Malta, Moldova, Monaco,
Montenegro, the Netherlands, North Macedonia, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania,
Russia, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain (including the Balearic Islands), Sweden,
Switzerland, Turkey, Ukraine and the United Kingdom (including the Channel Islands)
(Tescari 2001, 2004; Colombi and Brunetti 2002; Gogala 2003; Ribes et al. 2004; Rabitsch and

The presence of L. occidentalis in Ireland, rst reported by Foley and McCormack (2013)
based on a single specimen found in a hardware store near the city of Wexford in 2010, can
be conrmed: M. Jaacks reported a specimen found in Dublin in January 2013 to the online
database RISC Heteroptera Non-Native Species Records. Additionally, he wrote: “This is
the second siting we have had in the house. The rst was back in November [2012].” (NBN
Atlas 2019a).
Furthermore, various records of L. occidentalis on the Isle of Man reported between 2011
and 2016 are registered in the online database NBN Atlas (2019b).

... This stinkbug has become a serious invading pest worldwide. In 1999, L. occidentalis was found in Europe for the first time in Italy (Taylor et al., 2001) and its population has been rapidly expanding in recent years throughout Europe (Dusoulier et al., 2007;Malumphy et al., 2008;Fent and Kment, 2011;Gapon, 2013;Lesieur et al., 2018;van der Heyden, 2019) and other more distant regions, such as North Africa (Ben Jamaa et al., 2013;Gapon, 2015). It has also spread to South America (Faúndez et al., 2017) and Asia (Ishikawa and Kikuhara, 2009;Ahn et al., 2013). ...

Many stinkbugs in the superfamily Coreoidea (Hemiptera: Heteroptera) develop crypts in the posterior midgut, harboring Caballeronia (Burkholderia) symbionts. These symbionts form a monophyletic group in Burkholderia sensu lato, called the "stinkbug-associated beneficial and environmental (SBE)" group, recently reclassified as the new genus Caballeronia. SBE symbionts are separated into the subclades SBE-α and SBE-β. Previous studies suggested a regional effect on the symbiont infection pattern; Japanese and American bug species are more likely to be associated with SBE-α, while European bug species are almost exclusively associated with SBE-β. However, since only a few insect species have been investigated, it remains unclear whether region-specific infection is general. We herein investigated Caballeronia gut symbionts in diverse Japanese, European, and North American populations of a cosmopolitan species, the Western conifer seed bug Leptoglossus occidentalis (Coreoidea: Coreidae). A mole-cular phylogenetic ana-lysis of the 16S rRNA gene demonstrated that SBE-β was the most dominant in all populations. Notably, SBE-α was rarely detected in any region, while a third clade, the "Coreoidea clade" occupied one fourth of the tested populations. Although aposymbiotic bugs showed high mortality, SBE-α- and SBE-β-inoculated insects both showed high survival rates; however, a competition assay demonstrated that SBE-β outcompeted SBE-α in the midgut crypts of L. occidentalis. These results strongly suggest that symbiont specificity in the Leptoglossus-Caballeronia symbiotic association is influenced by the host rather than geography, while the geographic distribution of symbionts may be more important in other bugs.
... In 2015, it was detected in Lebanon [12] and, more recently, in Crete and in the northern part of the Golan Heights [54,55]. The invasion continues and new records from different countries in Africa, South America and Europe have been recorded from 2019 until 2021 [56][57][58][59][60][61][62][63]. ...

Mediterranean stone pine nut is appreciated for its high economic and nutritional value. Starting in 2012, Pinus pinea nut production declined throughout the Mediterranean area. The dry cone syndrome associated with this decline and the introduction of Leptoglossus occidentalis occurred simultaneously. This study aims to evaluate potential reasons behind the decline in pine nut production in Lebanon, considering climatic factors and the invasion of L. occidentalis. Correlation analysis was used to examine a potential relationship between cone yield and the percentage of damaged seeds per cone. Climatic variables were also tested. Two time periods were considered for analysis: before and after 2012. Cone production and the percentage of damaged seeds were negatively correlated (r = 􀀀0.42). From 2012 to 2017, cone production declined by 50% and the percentage of damaged seeds increased on average from 3% in 2012 up to 60% in 2017. Correlations were detected between cone production and the temperature of the hottest three months of the year of harvesting, and between cone production and average temperatures during the year of cone initiation. A conjunction of factors that include L. occidentalis and climatic factors might have affected the pine nut production in Lebanon.

During a brief visit of Alonnisos Island in 2022 some insect species (mainly butterflies) were observed and photographed. Three of them are new for the island’s fauna - the giant Asian mantis Hierodula tenuidentata Saussure, 1869, western conifer seed bug Leptoglossus occidentalis Heidemann, 1910, millet skipper Pelopidas thrax (Hübner, [1821]). Their establishment on the island is not a surprise, but it well illustrates the expansion of these species in the Mediterranean area. A list of the observed butterflies is also provided.

The western conifer seed bug, Leptoglossus occidentalis (Heteroptera: Coreidae), originated from North America, was recently introduced to Europe and is still quickly spreading across the continent. In the years 2004 and 2005, a few specimens have also been found in Hungary. The genus and the species is new for the Hungarian fauna. The species is considered as pest of diverse coniferous plants. Its morphology, biology, food plants and damage is briefly discussed.
