Abstract

The professional community is increasingly addressing the problems of business performance of public enterprises with majority state ownership. Although it is the companies that have significant natural resources and are of strategic importance, very low returns on equity, or even losses are present in their business. In this research paper we investigate business performance and the level of corporate governance of Republic of Srpska (RS) public companies with the majority state-owned listed on Banja Luka Stock Exchange, especially Elektroprivreda RS companies. Measuring the success of the business enterprise is based on the analysis of financial statements for the last fve years, using indicators of profitability and market indicators. Particularly, we assess the level of corporate governance in companies Elektroprivreda RS, in survey research using Scorecard Banja Luka Stock Exchange questionnaires. The aim of the study is to indicate low levels of business performance of surveyed companies in relation to foreign as well as the low level of corporate governance in companies Elektroprivreda RS. It also signifies the relationship between the used indicators and the level of corporate governance and the need for changes in the state policy towards the management of the state capital.

This paper is focused on estimating the credit scoring models for companies operating in the Republic of Croatia. According to level of economic and legal development, especially in the area of bankruptcy regulation as well as business ethics in the Republic of Croatia, the models derived can be applied in wider region particularly in South-eastern European countries that twenty years ago transferred from state directed to free market economy. The purpose of this paper is to emphasize the relevance and possibilities of particular financial ratios in estimating the creditworthiness of business entities what was realized by performing the research among 110 companies. Along most commonly used research methods of description, analysis and synthesis, induction, deduction and surveys, the mathematical and statistical logistic regression method took the central part in this research. The designed sample of 110 business entities represented the structure of firms operating in Republic of Croatia according to their activities as well as to their size. The sample was divided in two sub samples where the first one consist of small and medium enterprises (SME) and the second one consist of big business entities. In the next phase the logistic regression method was applied on the 50 independent variables – financial ratios calculated for each sample unit in order to find ones that best discriminate financially stable from unstable companies. As the result of logistic regression analysis, two credit scoring models were derived. First model include the liquidity, solvency and profitability ratios and is applicable for SME’s. With its classification accuracy of 97% the model has high predictive ability and can be used as an effective decision support tool. Second model is applicable for big companies and include only two independent variables – liquidity and solvency ratios. The classification accuracy of this model is 92,5% and, according to criteria of predictive ability, it can be estimated as high. Credit scoring models represent scientifically based derived decision support tool. Their application on micro level can prevent the establishment of business relation with financially instable companies what can potentially result in losses while on macro level they can signal the forthcoming problems in economy as a whole and give the impulse for acting in appropriate direction.

The purpose of this paper is to identify factors that have an influence on bilateral trade among the Western Balkan countries for the period from 1995 to 2012. Unlike a majority of works that have dealt with the subject of trade in the Balkans or the SEEs, not only geographical, economic or political factors are taken into account, but also factors constituting cultural, communicational and historical types of the so-called “distance” between countries. In order to assess their influence on trade values, an augmented version of the gravity model is employed. It was estimated threefold: as pooled data by OLS, as a random effects model and as a fixed effects model with an additional estimation of time-invariant variables following the method of Cheng and Wall (2005). The results of the research are surprising, as the strongest influence on trade values were exhibited by variables representing ease of a direct communication and similarity of religious structures. In addition, war and one-year-post-war effect showed a strong and statistically important influence. Thus, the main conclusion is that non-economic factors in the region of the Western Balkans play the most important role in determining trade values between countries.

This research note makes use of Z’-scores to establish whether they could have been used to predict the collapse of New Zealand finance companies. The financial statements of 20 finance companies were analysed over the five year period immediately prior to their collapse. The Z’-score and its trend over the period were evaluated against Altman’s criteria to determine the likelihood of failure. In the five year period prior to their collapse, the majority of companies had Z’-scores which suggested failure was imminent. This study recommends that companies include failure prediction models in their financial statements or as part of the financial ratios published in a financial review or trend statement. This additional information is likely to increase investor confidence through their ability to make more informed decisions.

Businesses are enterprises which produce goods or render services for profit motive. To be able to predict the financial soundness of a business has led to many research works. Financial ratios are a key indicator of financial soundness of a business. Financial ratios are a tool to determine the operational & financial efficiency of business undertakings. There exist a large number of ratios propounded by various authors. Altman developed a z-score model using ratios as its foundation. With the help of the Z- Score model, Altman could predict financial efficiency/bankruptcy up to 2-3 years in advance. The following research paper describes in detail the studies carried out by Altman to predict business bankruptcy. Altman made regular changes to achieve the perfect equation which could predict bankruptcy. The following research paper summarizes the research of Altman that have being made to develop the Altman Z score model. It can be safely said that Altman’s Z score Model can be applied to modern economy to predict distress and bankruptcy one, two & three years in advance.

This study investigates the ability of three versions of Altman’s Z-Score model (Z, Z’, and Z”) of distress prediction developed in the U.S. to predict the corporate distress in the emerging market of Sri Lanka. The results show that these models have a remarkable degree of accuracy in predicting distress using financial ratios computed from financial statements in the year prior to distress. The overall success rate of 81% is observed using the Z”-Score. The out-of-sample evidence provided in this paper means that the Z-Score models seem to have a very good potential in evaluating the risk of corporate distress in smaller emerging markets as well. http://papers.ssrn.com/sol3/cf_dev/AbsByAuth.cfm?per_id=327186

This study demonstrates that stocks with low book-to-market ratios, also known as glamour stocks, have significantly more positive skewness in their return distributions compared to the return distributions of value stocks with high book-to-market ratios. The premium (discount) investors apply to these glamour (value) stocks also correlates significantly with the difference in return skewness. These findings suggest that the value/glamour-stock puzzle is partially explained by investor preference for positive skewness in stock returns. Such preference for skewness, which is consistent with investors having inverse S-shaped utility functions, is observed in such consumer behaviors as lottery purchases and gambling. This paper further documents significant predictive power of accounting-based measures, such as the book rate of return, with respect to the skewness of stock returns.
