Digital Open Badge-Driven Learning - Gamified Progress and Inspiring Assessment

Abstract

Digital open badges (e.g. Mozilla Open Badges) offer novel possibilities in identifying and recognising competences independent of how they were acquired. Digital open badge-driven learning suggests to enhance learning by promoting inspiring gamified competence-development. This paper offers a summary of the first European doctoral dissertation to represent an innovative application of competence-based approach and gamified learning process. The summary aims to address recent theoretical approaches to digital open badge-driven learning and principles for designing gamification with badges that could potentially support a competence-based approach in continuing professional development to meet the individual professional needs.

Resumen La pandemia ocasionada por el COVID-19 ha presentado nuevos retos a la educación superior y de manera particular a los estudiantes. Muchos tienen miedo de seguir con su proceso formativo y han pensado en detener su carrera, mientras todo "vuelve a la normalidad". Este escrito quiere brindar para esos estudiantes universitarios un espacio reflexivo que les ofrece unos temas de análisis a la hora de tomar decisiones importantes. Se plantea que esta situación de pandemia y confinamiento social se puede entender como una ocasión histórica para plantearse nuevas pedagogías de enseñanza-aprendizaje, la asunción de otras metodologías que implican mayor compromiso personal, una manera distinta de evaluar el proceso académico desde el aprendizaje vivencial y una renovación del compromiso ético personal.

Teachers and educators in different domains and educational levels attempt to motivate and engage students through learning and interaction. Teachers and educators often think that students either have interest or not, but they might not recognize that interest can be aroused by features of environments, by designing an array of teaching and learning and by different activities. The aim of this research is to explore the significant triggers among higher education students (n=74) in a socio-digital environment. The data consists of students' online discussion posts (N=68), group discussion syntheses (N=10), and essays (N=21). The content analysis identified significant triggers, and categories were clustered. The results show that the most significant triggers are collaboration, topic, and feedback. The results reveal a new understanding for a collaborative learning framework. Findings from the present study suggest that teachers and educators in different domains and levels need to pay more attention to triggers in collaborative learning, particularly in socio-digital contexts.

Background. Digital badges are used in games and simulations for purposes such as incentivizing learning, identifying progress, increasing time on task, and credentialing. Designing effective badges is complicated by psychological factors mediating the processes of recognizing, orienting toward, and acquiring badges. Aim. This article analyzes digital badges through mechanics and psychology. This approach involves understanding the underlying logics of badges as well as the experiential nature of badges-in-use. The proposed model provides additional insight about badges and recommends design strategies to complement existing scholarship. Procedure. This article examines an existing model of completion logic for digital badges. This model is expanded upon by pairing these formal mechanics with relevant psychological theory, summarizing key principles that pertain to how people interact with badges. It then considers three dimensions of badgesin- use—social, cognitive, and affective—reviewing examples and analyzing the relationship of badging to debriefing. Outcome. Understanding the relationships between formal completion logics and the psychological experience of badging allows designers to better design, deploy, and critique badging systems, leading to more effective implementations within simulation and gaming contexts. A design matrix and a series of design recommendations for badging are derived from the presented perspectives.

Background. Designing collaborative three-dimensional (3D) learning games is one way to enhance the quality of learning and respond to the needs of working life. However, there is little research on how to apply different game mechanics to support different educational aims. Aim. This study determines how game mechanics implemented within computer-supported collaboration roles (scripted vs. emergent) are associated with the emergence of collaboration. Method. The research at hand applies both qualitative and quantitative content analysis. The target group consisted of 15 vocational school students. The data were gathered by recording the groups’ discussions and saving the game logs. A total of 8,128 transcribed utterances were eligible for content analysis to shed light on the characteristics in knowledge construction under scripted and emergent role situations. Results. We found differences between the players’ utterances in tasks with scripted and emergent roles. At the scripted-role level, providing knowledge was the most dominant type of utterance. Further, students with similar roles performed actions and applied similar activities. In the level based on emerging collaboration processes, shared problem solving was the most actively used speech activity. Conclusions. Emphasizing and applying different game mechanics with different collaboration roles (scripted vs. emergent) can be used to support different educational aims of games. Recommendation. Collaboration is needed among professionals from technological and educational sites of game research to fully understand how to apply game mechanics in educational games.

In order to be productive at home, school, or work, and in their free time, learners are constantly involved in communicating, collaborating, problem solving, and thinking critically. They need to master these skills to participate fully and effectively in society (McLaughlin, 2008). International organizations (e.g., OECD, EU, UNESCO), public-private partnerships (P21, ACTS), educational organizations (e.g., ISTE, NAEP), and researchers have formulated frameworks describing the skills necessary to contribute to the 21st century, and how to design learning environments to foster these skills (e.g., Trilling & Fadel, 2009). However, the roles of interest, motivation, and engagement that enable the development of these skills has not been carefully examined. In general, learners elect to engage in tasks and activities in which they feel competent and confident, and avoid those in which they do not (e.g., Bandura, 1997). Challenging tasks can lead some learners to feel they are not able to learn; for others, challenge is a reason to persevere. However, only those who believe that their actions will result in the consequences they desire have the incentive to engage (Schunk, 1995). Decades of research have shown that learners with a strong sense of their own competence approach difficult tasks and situations as challenges to be mastered, rather than as threats to be avoided (Zimmermann & Schunk, 2011). Past experience solving problems and individual interest impacts their ability to work with challenge or failure (Tulis & Ainley, 2011). Research on group learning, for example, has shown that learners’ interpretations can be positive and lead to increased motivation and engagement for group activities; and, alternatively, that learners’ perceptions can be negative and lead to de-motivation and withdrawal (Van den Bossche, Gijselaers, Segers, & Kirchner, 2006).
