Theprimarygoalofresearchistoadvanceknowledge.Forthatknowledgetobenefitresearchand31
society,itmustbetrustworthy.Trustworthyresearchisrobust,rigorousandtransparentatallstagesof32
design,executionandreporting.InitiativessuchastheSanFranciscoDeclarationonResearch33
Assessment(DORA)andtheLeidenManifestohaveledthewaybringingmuchneededglobalattention34
totheimportanceoftakingaconsidered,transparentandbroadapproachtoassessingresearchquality.35
Sincepublicationin2012theDORAprincipleshavebeensigneduptobyover1500organizationsand36
nearly15,000individuals.Despitethissignificantprogress,assessmentofresearchersstillrarelyincludes37
considerationsrelatedtotrustworthiness,rigorandtransparency.WehavedevelopedtheHongKong38
Principles(HKP)aspartofthe6thWorldConferenceonResearchIntegritywithaspecificfocusonthe39
needtodriveresearchimprovementthroughensuringthatresearchersareexplicitlyrecognizedand40
rewarded(i.e.,theircareersareadvanced)forbehaviorthatleadstotrustworthyresearch.TheHKP41
havebeendevelopedwiththeideathattheirimplementationcouldassistinhowresearchersare42
assessedforcareeradvancementwithaviewtostrengthenresearchintegrity.Wepresentfive43
principles:responsibleresearchpractices;transparentreporting;openscience(openresearch);valuing44
adiversityoftypesofresearch;andrecognizingallcontributionstoresearchandscholarlyactivity.For45
eachprincipleweprovidearationaleforitsinclusionandprovideexampleswheretheseprinciplesare46
alreadybeingadopted.47
Introduction48
Inaquesttoadvanceknowledge,researcherspublishapproximately1.5millionjournalarticleseach49
year.Thepresumptionisthatthisliteraturecanbeusedbyotherresearchers,stakeholders,andthe50
widersocietybecauseitistrusted,robust,rigorousandcomplete.51

Theapproachtakentovalidatingresearchanditsoutcomesdiffersdependingonthenatureofthe53
research.Forexample,torigorouslyexaminetheeffectsofahealthintervention,trialparticipants54
(humanoranimal)aretypicallyrequiredtoberandomizedtotheinterventionbeingstudied.Many55
researchersadvocateregistrationofprotocolsasawaytoensuretransparencyandtoenableothersto56
engagewiththeirresearch.Subsequently,theuseofreportingguidelinescanhelpensurecompleteand57
transparentreportingoftheresearchers’methodsandresults.Whentheresearchisbeing58
disseminated,theresearchteamwouldensurethattheassociateddata,materialsandanyanalytical59
codearemadeavailableasanintegralpartofpublication.Suchdatasharingfacilitatesre‐analysisofthe60
datatocheckreproducibilityandtoperformsecondaryanalyses.61

Althoughsomemechanismsexisttosupportresearchersinensuringtransparencyatallstagesofdesign,63
executionandreporting,thereisnotwidespreadadoptionofthesepractices.Therearemany64
interwovenreasonsforthis.Onecontributingfactor,weargue,isthatlittleemphasisisplacedonthe65
rigorofresearchwhenhiring,reviewingandpromotingresearchers.Workingtogetheracrossthe66
researchsectorasawholetoaddressthissystemicissue,webelieve,offersaglobalopportunityto67
improveresearchandimpact.68

WedevelopedtheHongKongPrinciples(HKP)aspartofthe6thWorldConferenceonResearchIntegrity70
(WCRI)specificallytodrivegreaterrecognitionforresearcherswhocommittorobust,rigorousand71
transparentpractices(i.e.,theircareersareadvanced)(seeFigure).Ifimplemented,theHKPcouldplaya72
criticalroleinevidence‐basedassessmentsofresearchersandputresearchrigorattheheartof73
assessment,aswellasopenupresearchtothewiderbenefitofsociety.74

Weproposefiveprinciples,eachwitharationaleforitsinclusion.Weillustratetheseprincipleswith76

million‐dollarinitiativetobringpatientsintoabroadrangeofactivitiesregardingresearchacross106
