The Relationship between Brain Dominance and Lateral Preference among Physical Education Students at Kadoorie University

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to identify the common brain dominance (BD) and lateral preference (LP) among physical education students at Kadoorie university and determine the relationship between (BD) and (LP), in addition to determine the differences in (BD) pattern and (LP) according to gender and academic specialization variables. To achieve that the study was conducted on a random sample that consisted of (112) male and female students. to gather data, the researchers used (Diane, 2005) scale for measuring (BD) and (Kashihara, 1979) scale for measuring (LP). The results revealed that the common pattern of (BD) for the students was integrated brain hemisphere dominance and their pattern of (LP) was right lateral. Also, there were statistically significant differences in (BD) according to academic specialization variable in favor of the diploma, and no significant relationship between (BD) and (LP). The researchers recommended to interest in the development of physical education curricula in Palestinian universities and schools. Keywords: Brain dominance, lateral preference, physical education.

Abstract

Brain Dominance Among Soccer Players in Palestine Prof. Qadumi, Abdel Naser A. DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.12785/JEPS/110409 ISSN: 1726-3678 التاريخ: 2010 https://journal.uob.edu.bh/handle/123456789/2446 The purpose of this study was to investigate brain dominance among soccer players in Palestine. In addition, to determine brain dominance according to club division, playing position, the most used playing foot, experience and educational qualification variables. The sample consisted of (214) players, and a (21) questions (Diane, 2005) scale was used for measurement of brain dominance. The results of the study revealed that the integrated brain dominance was the most common type among soccer players in Palestine where the rank order of brain dominance types were respectively: integrated brain dominance (84.6%), left-brain dominance (7.9%) and right brain dominance (7.5%). Also, the results indicated that there were a significant differences in brain dominance of soccer players in Palestine due to division in favor of excellence one, playing position in favor of middle players, and experience in favor of 10 years and more. While there were no significant differences in brain dominance among soccer players in Palestine due to educational qualification and the most used playing foot variables.

Sex-related differences in creativity-related hemispheric selective processes at the global and local levels were studied using hierarchically presented letters under the conditions of their identification and comparison. The results showed that, irrespective of the sex and the type of creative thinking, its originality was associated with the acceleration of right-hemispheric processes of information selection at the global level and deceleration of interhemispheric communication. Relationships between the originality of ideas and hemispheric attentional characteristics were stronger in men during the solution of verbal creative problems and in women during figurative original thinking. The originality of verbal activity in men was more closely associated with the success of selective processes in the left hemisphere; in women, with the selective functions of both hemispheres. Figurative thinking in men was less related to hemispheric characteristics of attention compared to women. An increase in figurative originality in women was accompanied by the acceleration of information selection in the right hemisphere and a higher efficiency of local attention and speeds of global processing in the left hemisphere.

This investigation reviewed 14 studies describing the trichotomous distribution of foot preference behaviour spanning early childhood to adult years. Findings suggest that a substantially greater percentage of children are mixed-footed in comparison to older individuals. A significant shift towards right-sidedness appears to occur sometime during late childhood, after which, behaviour remains relatively stable. The incidence of left-footedness is similar across the lifespan. In comparison to handedness, substantially more (about twice as many) young children are mixed-footed compared to mixed-handed. A similar pattern is noted during adolescence and adulthood, but the differences are smaller. Values for leftsidedness (upper and lower limbs) are comparable across the lifespan. Of the existing theoretical models, Annett's Right-shift hypothesis with additional propositions related to environmental influences (Collins, 1977; Porac, 1993; Provins, 1992) provides partial explanation for the findings.

Dominance of hand, foot, ear and eye was examined in the Colorado Adoption Project (CAP) to examine whether previously reported familial trends in lateralization are the result of genetic or environmental processes. Despite a relatively large sample size for an adoption study, and evidence that the measures of lateralization were typical of those found in other studies, no significant familial trends were found in any of the measures of direction of lateralization. Nevertheless, effects found for handedness were of a similar magnitude to that shown elsewhere in the literature and it was concluded that this adoption study alone did not have sufficient statistical power to partition variance into genetic and environmental components. Other studies taken alone are also likely to suffer from the same problem, and therefore the question is only likely to be definitively resolved by combining data from a number of studies by means of meta-analysis. Degree of lateralization was also examined and no evidence was found for familial trends in handedness, footedness, eyedness or earedness. Power analysis suggested that the present data were sufficient to detect effects similar to those previously reported for handedness and that this result was best interpreted as a true failure of replication of familial association for handedness. The study is also the first to examine degree of eyedness, earedness and footedness, and finds no evidence for familial associations.

Creativity can be understood to mean many different things, and researchers study creativity from widely varying points of view. One target for the present research is the process of creative thinking. The focus is on the subjective evaluation that such thinking is beautiful, excellent, amazing, and creative. The hypothesis: that which is creative is attractive. To investigate this hypothesis, subjects’ assessment of creativeness of their ideas were examined in three types of creative thinking tasks. Subjects undertook these tasks and evaluated attractiveness and creativeness of their own and others’ efforts intuitively. Their intuitive and subjective evaluation is largely a matter of emotion, and their measures of the evaluation are subconscious functions. There are high correlations between attractiveness and creativeness that is rated as novel and appropriate. In particular, there are very high correlations in one of the three tasks, named the new product test. The absence of correlation between novelty and appropriateness suggests that novelty and appropriateness are independent of each other. In all creative thinking tasks, answers can be obtained in sufficient quantity and with an adequate range of scores. The new product test in particular yields a range of responses from the highest score to the lowest. The results of this experiment support the hypothesis that what is creative is attractive. Furthermore, the considered thinking tasks should be valid for assessing the influence of the physical environment on creative performance.

Direction and degree of handedness were assessed in 374 children (aged 3–9 yrs) in transverse and longitudinal studies, using a 10-item performance battery. Item analysis revealed a single underlying factor with a bimodal distribution. Direction of handedness appeared to be more or less fixed by the age of 3 yrs. Degree of handedness increased at least over the range 3–7 yrs, and perhaps more slowly from 7 to 9 yrs. Degree of handedness showed no correlation with reading ability or general intelligence. Theoretical implications are discussed and interpreted in terms of a hypothesis whereby degree of handedness is a unique phenomenon. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2012 APA, all rights reserved)

Administered self-report instruments to graduate students for the assessment of hemisphericity in creative functioning. Instruments for assessing hemisphericity included Your Style of Thinking and Learning; instruments for assessing creative style included What Kind of Person Are You?, and the Welsh Figure Preference Test; instruments for assessing creative ability included the Torrance Tests of Creative Thinking and the Remote Associates Test. Results show a consistent tendency for the measures of creative style to be positively and significantly related to the right-hemisphere style of information processing, and negatively and significantly related to the left-hemisphere style. There was also more of a tendency for the left-hemisphere style to be negatively related to measures of creative ability than for positive relations between right and integrative styles and measures of creative ability.
