Abstract

The concepts of love, freedom, consent, and fecundity are fundamental goods known by the human person. Each of these are connected to the moral law that can be discovered by the human person through reason and through Revelation. It is through faith that we know these goods to be given by God, and by grace and a free assent in the will to the moral law that human persons and human societies flourish. An analogy is made between the moral law and the natural laws of the universe that are discovered through science. In discovering these laws, through experience, the creative capacity of human persons within the law is born -- and truth, beauty, and goodness abound. Discovery of the moral law, especially in terms of human sexuality, is connected to Wojtyla’s personalism that is found in his 1962 book, Love and Responsibility.

An analysis of the history of technology shows that technological change is exponential, contrary to the common-sense “intuitive linear” view. So we won’t experience 100 years of progress in the 21st century — it will be more like 20,000 years of progress (at today’s rate). The “returns,” such as chip speed and cost-effectiveness, also increase exponentially. There’s even exponential growth in the rate of exponential growth. Within a few decades, machine intelligence will surpass human intelligence, leading to The Singularity — technological change so rapid and profound it represents a rupture in the fabric of human history. The implications include the merger of biological and nonbiological intelligence, immortal software-based humans, and ultra-high levels of intelligence that expand outward in the universe at the speed of light. You will get $40 trillion just by reading this essay and understanding what it says. For complete details, see below. (It’s true that authors will do just about anything to keep your attention, but I’m serious about this statement. Until I return to a further explanation, however, do read the first sentence of this paragraph carefully.) Now back to the future: it’s widely misunderstood. Our forebears expected the future to be pretty much like their present, which had been pretty much like their past. Although exponential trends did exist a thousand years ago, they were at that very early stage where an exponential trend is so flat that it looks like no trend at all. So their lack of expectations was largely fulfilled. Today, in accordance with the common wisdom, everyone expects continuous technological progress and the social repercussions that follow. But the future will be far more surprising than most observers realize: few have truly internalized the implications of the fact that the rate of change itself is accelerating.

Inaugurating a new kind of Conciliar document, the elaboration of the Pastoral Constitution Gaudium et Spes was difficult, and encountered more obstacles than the other Council documents. How was the document elaborated? How has it been received in the past decades? And above all, what are the current challenges for a Church called upon to profoundly redefine its way of being present to society?

This paper examines the meaning of what Karol Wojtyla/John Paul II calls "The Law of the Gift," namely, "Man, who is the only creature on earth which God willed for itself, can fully find himself only through a sincere gift of himself" After explaining what it means to be "willed for itself," I consider how "finding oneself only through a gift of self" is justified. I then argue that in his theory of self-gift, Wojtyla/John Paul II espouses an "embodied" altruism. Two objections to Wojtyla/John Paul ifs account are also addressed: (1) the idea that finding fulfillment (moral goodness) through self-giving is incompatible with altruism and (2) that reciprocal self-giving is incompatible with altruism. I defend Wojtyla/John Paul II's notion of self-giving against these objections in several ways, but focus on evidence for the compatibility of subjective enrichment and altruism.

Does society exist for each one of us, or does each one of us exist for society? Does the parish exist for the parishioner or die parishioner for the parish? This question, we feel immediately, involves two aspects, in each of which there must be some element of truth. A unilateral answer would only plunge us into error. Hence, we must disengage the formal principles of a truly comprehensive answer and describe the precise hierarchies of values which it implies.
