Abstract

The subject of this study is the interdisciplinary perspective approach to knowledge productivity within the service industry. Relationships between organizational design and employee engagement are studied between constructs of both organizational and psychological theory and their effects on knowledge productivity, whereby an attempt is made to bridge both disciplines. Amongst other things the level of responsible autonomy (RA) is related to employee engagement (E) and organizational knowledge productivity. It is argued that an organizational design and the “misfit” of the employee’s preferences with the perceived organizational design characteristics will have a strong negative influence on their work engagement- and knowledge productivity levels.

De volledige tekst kan opgevraagd worden bij de redactie. Inleiding In Nederland lijkt controle tot de norm verheven, met vergaderen als doel in plaats van middel. Iedereen mag meepraten, zelfs in crisissituaties. Project- en adviesgroepen worden ingevoerd en allerlei systemen en controlemechanismen worden ingesteld om een papieren werkelijkheid te creëren die allang is achterhaald. Een werkelijkheid waarin nadien niemand meer valt aan te spreken op het behaalde resultaat, omdat iedereen binnen zijn toegewezen taken het 'juiste' hee gedaan. Denk bijvoorbeeld aan de hoge-snelheidslijn, de toeslagenaffaire en de coronapandemie met alle problematiek rondom het beschikbaar stellen van vaccins: niemand schuldig, patiënt opgenomen of erger. In Nederland lijken we af en toe volledig doorgeschoten in ons streven de samenleving van elke onzekerheid te verlossen. Een 'lack of control' lijkt simpelweg niet toelaatbaar, waardoor later de paradox tot stand komt: een situatie die volledig 'out of control' is. Geen trein, geen compensatie, geen vaccin.

Drawing from self-determination theory and person-organization fit theory, thepresent study contributes to the literature on organizational purpose by examiningthe relationship between perceived organizational purpose and work engagementand the mediating role of person-organizational purpose (P-OP) fit herein. Basedon data from a cross-sectional quantitative study among 517 knowledge workersfrom five financial service organizations, we tested two possible psychological mech-anisms underlying the direct and indirect relationships between perceived organi-zational purpose and work engagement. The results of our structural equationmodelling confirmed the hypothesized indirect effect model in which perceived or-ganizational purpose was positively associated with work engagement, both directlyand indirectly via P-OP fit. These findings show that organizational purpose hasthe capacity to directly and indirectly foster work engagement. The study suggestsavenues for future research in OB, strategic HRM, and marketing.

Therefore, it is of the utmost importance to further research factors that are generally known to influence teachers' well-being at their jobs, such as self-efficacy (Consiglio et al. 2013;Skaalvik and Skaalvik 2014;Ventura et al. 2015;Kodden and van Ingen 2019), positive emotions (Bondarenko 2017;Schaufeli and Van Rhenen 2006), work engagement and burnout (Bakker and Demerouti 2008Kodden and Groenveld 2019). In this study, a model is developed and tested to examine the influence of non-conformism and self-efficacy on affective well-being and burnout amongst 401 Dutch schoolteachers. The relationships between the level of non-conformism and self-efficacy and subsequently the level of affective well-being, and burnout are hypothesised. The results of this study showed that self-efficacy is positively related to affective well-being and strongly negatively related to burnout. The results of this study also showed non-conformism to be a significant predictor for self-efficacy. Because of the strategic importance of human capital in schools, it is important practitioners are provided with tangible suggestions, such as non-conformist behaviour, to improve self-efficacy and well-being.
