Deepseafanshavebeenshowntorecordthephysicalandchemicalsignaturesoftheirlinked
continentscalerivercatchments.Quantitativeassessmentsofsedimentprovenance,sediment
recycling,androckexhumationcanbeacquiredfromterrigenoussedimentindeepseafansusing
paireddetritalzircon(DZ)UPbandUTh/He(ZHe)doubledatingtechniques.Here,wetargetthelate
Pleistocene(marineisotopestage2–6)Amazonfan(ODPLeg155),offshorenortheastSouth
America,togarnernewinsightsintocurrentandancientcontinentaltectonicsandsurfaceprocessesin
theAmazonbasin,andthepotentialimplicationsfortheformationoftheSouthAmericanpassive
margin.
UPbDZages,andthustheirassociatedZHecoolingages,reflectthedistributionofsandsized
materialtransferredfromtheAmazonrivertothedeepseafan.MeasuredZHeageshavedistinct
populationsthatbroadlycorrelatetoknownSouthAmericanorogeniceventssincethePhanerozoic.
SmallpopulationsofearlyPaleozoicZHeagesmaybroadlydelineatethePampeanandFamatanian
orogeniesbetween~550–400Ma,whilealargerpopulationofPermianZHeages(~275–300Ma)
delineatesatemporalrelationshiptotheGondwananorogeny.ThelargestpopulationofZHeages
representsAndeanexhumationbeginningbetweenca.70–50Mawithamajorincreaseinrate
between10–20Ma.NeogeneZHeagesmeasuredinoldUPbagepopulations(Mesozoic,Paleozoic,
andPrecambrian)notonlydelineatetheAndesasamajorsourceofAmazonfansediment,butalso
illustratethecommonoccurrenceandimportanceofsedimentburialandexhumation(recycling)within
theoverallAndeanorogenicsystem.ThepresenceofsignificantAndeanderivedzircons,andbyproxy
sandsizedterrigenoussediment,inthedeepseafansuggeststhatsedimentsupplytotheAmazon
marginviaexhumationoftheeasterncordilleraandAndeanforelandsincetheNeogene,hasbeenan
importantcontrolonresultantstratigraphicarchitectureandevolutionoftheSouthAmericanAtlantic
margin.ThesenewinterpretationsbasedonDZdoubledatingfromtheAmazonfanareconsistentwith
recentlypublishedinterpretationsofefficientsedimentthroughputfromAndeansourcetoAtlanticsink
duringthelasttwoglacioeustaticlowstands.
