Botulinum Toxin is a neurotoxin derived from Clostridium Botulinum(A&B)which targets Central Nervous system & disrupt the Signaling Processes that allow neurons to communicate effectively.Botulinum Toxin is the most poisonous substance known to man & as per the estimation of scientists 1gram of the toxin could kill 1million people 7 2kg of it could kill every human being on earth.Administration of high concentration of Botulinum toxin can lead to Botulism which left untreated would cause death.Botulinum Toxin in extremely small concentration which when injected prevents signals from the nerve cells reaching muscles leading to paralysis .The said Mechanism is being utilized popularly in Cosmetic treatment for Botulinum toxin is used to reduce fine lines and wrinkles by paralyzing the underlying muscles.

Botulism: An update

Botulism is a paralytic illness caused by the action of a neurotoxin elaborated by Clostridium botulinum. Other clostridial bacteria, like C.butyricum and C.baratii can also produce the toxin leading to signs and symptoms of botulism. Botulinum toxin, generally considered a potent poison, is successfully being used for treatment of various neuromuscular disorders representing one of the most dramatic role reversals of modern times.

The Janus-faced capability now is the aspect that this deadly toxin is taken in a purified version mostly of the serotype A (also known as Botox ®) as an effective therapeutical agent in the medical field since almost three decades and its application areas expand. Concerning the occupational medicine special emphases lie in prevention and ken of transmission of botulism on the one hand and in the awareness of its clinical symptoms as well as a realistic evaluation of the bioterroristic threat on the other hand.
