ANÁLISIS DEL MÁXIMO CUERPO COLEGIADO: EL CASO DE LAS UNIVERSIDADES CATÓLICAS COLOMBIANAS

Abstract

La intención de este artículo es estudiar la composición de los Máximos Cuerpos Colegiados (MCC) de las universidades confesionales colombianas y comparar sus resultados con un estudio similar realizado en una muestra de 42 universidades confesionales latinoamericanas. Las variables que se consideraron para el análisis fueron: funciones y composición del MCC, forma de elección del rector y procedencia de los grupos de interés o stakeholders. Los resultados muestran que la composición del MCC incluye miembros internos y externos a la institución que representan cinco tipos de stakeholders, equivalente a una frecuencia del 63.63%. En relación con la elección del rector, aunque prevalece la intervención de la propiedad o regencia de las instituciones, se tiene el mecanismo de las ternas, superando la elección directa que es preferente en el estudio de referencia. Se concluye, al comparar los resultados de los dos estudios, que la composición del MCC es heterogénea, por tanto corresponde a universidades sensibles a su entorno. En relación con sus funciones, coinciden con las esperadas para un MCC, pero se observa una alta frecuencia de funciones de gestión, lo que indica que aún no hay claridad respecto de las funciones que le competen al Gobierno Corporativo de las universidades confesionales colombianas y latinoamericanas.

Este estudio presenta la relación dinámica que se da entre las diversas concepcionesmisionales y su impacto sobre los modelos universitarios. El sobredimensionamientodel paradigma de producción de conocimiento para la universidad creaun desbalance educativo. La universidad confesional puede contribuir con sus característicasa una oferta educativa que incluya las tres misiones imperantes peroagregando, en esta interacción, el surgimiento de la cuarta misión como un aportea una formación más completa. Este nuevo propósito misional, no solo sirve parala universidad confesional dado que incluye el fomento de la sabiduría, sino quetambién puede ser de utilidad a la institución laica. Hacia el final, la discusión seorienta a algunas posibles problemáticas para generar un modelo universitariomás balanceado.

El presente trabajo examina diversas teorías que explican las implicancias de las funciones y atributos de los gobiernos corporativos en la divulgación voluntaria de información; particularmente se hace el énfasis en las universidades y sus consejos de administración, directorios o Máximos Cuerpos Colegiados (MCC). Se realizó una revisión de la literatura utilizando una metodología basada en la búsqueda, organización y análisis de la información. Los resultados muestran que las teorías son complementarias con respecto a identificar los roles y funciones de los MCC y generan diversas consecuencias en la divulgación de la información.Re

Purpose: To conduct a transnational study of universities' mission statements (MS) through content analysis by identifying characteristics related to language (e.g., number of words, the most and least frequently used words) and if those characteristics are related to universities' location, size, focus, research output, age band, and status. Design/methodology: Content analysis of 248 MS from universities worldwide using Voyant Tools. Findings: The main results show: (1) a necessity for self-awareness by the universities; (2) an overall emphasis on society and students, as stakeholders; (3) there were no discernible similarities in keywords used between firms and universities; (4) MS tend to be longer in universities from Asia and shorter from Europe; (5) the absence of quantitative elementsinto MS (e.g. number of new students enrolled); (6) small universities prioritized knowledge over research; (7) the youngest universities tend to use more of the least frequently used words; (8) collaboration was a barely mentioned term, although the pre-eminence of research and the dominance of groups in knowledge is now a global trend; (9) the youngest universities tend to use more of the least frequently used words; (10) public universities emphasized individuals (i.e., students) and private universities emphasized education as a whole; and (11) the private sector has a noticeable interest in the society which contrasts with the public sector's focus on community. Research limitations/implications: Subsamples of certain regions should be more inclusive in further studies. Considering that the mean sample of MS studies was 89.6, this study used a sample more than two times larger. Although, both African (4) and Latin American (5) subsamples were not significant compared with European (94) or North American (79) subsamples. Further studies should consider a more-inclusive sampling than the QS world university ranking. Practical implications: University planning offices can use these results and the digital database to construct a global outlook on MS trends or uncommonly used words to define the purpose of their university and future course of action, embrace an overall isomorphism, or seek a distinctive strategy to differentiate their MS from others. In addition, this research can be used by strategic planning scholars to conduct regionally or nationally focused studies. Social implications: Universities' MS serve as public pronouncements of their purpose, ambition, and values. In this study, we present and analyze the contents of those purposes, in which mission-oriented universities, some of them global influencers, seek to perform in multiple levels of importance for every country (i.e., education, research, and services with both private and public sectors, and the community).Originality/value: Most of the previous studies have been restricted to national contexts and based on reduced samples with no open access digital data. In this study, we consider a wide sample of universities from Europe, North America, Asia, and Oceania. We also considered both Latin America and Africa in a strictly exploratory fashion due to sample restriction and delivered a digital open access database of MS from those universities.

La relación entre universidad y entorno ha sido abordada desde distintas perspectivas desde el siglo XIX, existiendo una evolución conceptual para entender este vínculo en función de la visión que predomine sobre el papel de la universidad, en un determinado contexto y época. En América Latina conviven actualmente dos enfoques predominantes: la extensión y la vinculación con el medio, cuyas concepciones tienen raíces comunes. Pero al no existir un consenso claro sobre sus características constitutivas, se dificulta su análisis y la comparación de los resultados, tanto en el ámbito nacional como internacional. Este artículo analiza los resultados de un estudio comparativo de políticas y estrategias de vinculación con el medio en una muestra de universidades regionales estatales de Colombia y Chile, definiendo el ámbito de vinculación preponderante en estas. El trabajo se desarrolló a través del paradigma cualitativo, bajo un enfoque descriptivo. Los resultados permiten afirmar que el área de vinculación con el medio está en construcción, que los conceptos de vinculación y extensión coexisten y que el ámbito con mayor preponderancia es el cultural, con tendencia hacia el económico o de transferencia, por encima de lo social.

Classifying universities is regarded as an efficient strategy for developing institution-based policy for different types of universities. In Turkey, there is no widely accepted classification or official classification of universities for researchers and policy makers. Regarding this need, the first purpose of this study is to classify universities in Turkey on the basis of institutional size and performance. Since the focus of the study is institutional size and performance, researchers approach the subject from the perspectives of management and organization. Universities were classified using hierarchical cluster analysis. All state and foundation universities were included in the study. The data sources were statistics of the Council of Higher Education (CoHE), ranking lists, University Ranking by Academic Performance (URAP), Ranking of the Entrepreneurial and Innovative University Index (TUBİTAK), strategic plans and annual reports of higher education institutions, and related data on research and publications. Universities were clustured on the basis of objective data not predetermined criteria. The main variables for cluster analysis were quantitative measures, ranking scores, and measures of the quality of teaching and research for each university. The results of the cluster analysis showed that clustering universities by institutional size and performance as two separate variables provided better results. The scale and tenure of universities differentiated them in terms of institutional size and performance variables. Universities founded in the same years were divided into two clusters, mainly according to the size of their vocational schools. It was also found that when publication performance was expressed, those universities that were small/medium sized, focused, and long tenured were separate from other universities.
Chapter
The purpose of this chapter is to outline the development of the idea of "stakeholder management" as it has come to be applied in strategic management. We begin by developing a brief history of the concept. We then suggest that traditionally the stakeholder approach to strategic management has several related characteristics that serve as distinguishing features. We review recent work on stakeholder theory and suggest how stakeholder management has affected the practice of management. We end by suggesting further research questions.

The aim of this study is to examine whether gender diversity on audit committees (hereinafter, ACs) influences financial reporting quality by using panel data of Spanish listed firms. The financial reporting quality of firms is measured by the type of opinion received in the audit report. We estimate various panel data models of audit opinions and control for factors that are traditionally found to impact audit opinions. This study provides evidence to support the hypotheses that the percentage of females on ACs reduces the probability of qualifications due to errors, non-compliance or the omission of information. Furthermore, the results also find that the percentage of female directors on ACs, the percentage of independent female directors on ACs and ACs chaired by females increase the likelihood of further transparency by disclosing audit reports with uncertainties and scope limitation qualifications.
