Introduction Human behavior is usually led by the achievement of personal well-being. Over the years, counseling proved its potentiality as first choice tool for supporting this process. However, given the complexity and multidimensionality of well-being, it becomes imperative to identify its constituent features before planning interventions. The aim of this review was to identify the dimensions of well-being on which counselling interventions can be carried out. Methods The scientific databases PubMed and CINAHL were reviewed along with others sources. Subsequent to the selection of the articles, a qualitative evaluation of the identified studies was carried out. Results Twenty-one studies were included in the review. The most common dimensions of well-being were related to social context, people' individuality, emotions and health status. Moreover, a number of studies showed the effectiveness of improving well-being through interventions aimed at developing the strengths of individuals, as in a counseling process. Discussion In a helping relationship, the counselor analyses the individual dimensions of well-being, facilitates the client in his becoming aware of the emotion-related elements and fosters, when appropriate, behavioral changes with respect to the social dimensions.
