My exhibition with Claire Lambe presents works that are the fruit of their year-long stay at the Wissenschaftskolleg in Berlin. It focuses on the life of the Kolleg in all of its aspects to examine the relationship of “Wissen” (knowledge) to “Schaffen” (creation, shaping). Scholars from the sciences, humanities and social sciences as well as writers and artists gather at Wiko in a yearly cycle. ... [Show full abstract] we reflect on the material and social conditions of knowledge and its social and material underpinnings. The common pursuit of knowledge at the Wissenschaftskolleg produces a space of ideal, disinterested conversation, of inspiring colloquia and intense listening. Lambe considers, in a series of drawings inspired by the very attentiveness of the Fellows during the weekly talks, the wider social impediments to communication in the post-truth Rashomon-like world in which we find ourselves. “Schaffen” is a complex term that includes notions of managing, coping, creating, and succeeding but, within that “succeeding,” are the many false starts and dead-end streets that are part of the acquisition of knowledge. Thus, Ossman takes the detritus of scholarship as the medium for installations shaped from discarded hypotheses, unproven theorems, and the corpus of texts read at the Wiko over a 12-month cycle. In addition to the queries of scholars, she highlights the role of librarians, the work of cooks and custodians, and the sustenance of coffee in knowledge production at the Institute.
