Abstract

Employees’ attitudes towards implementing biometric fingerprint and its relations to organizational commitment in the Sultanate of Oman

Abstract
The process of controlling the attendance and leaving of the employee is essential in the business organizations. Moreover, the contemporary technological progress has a clear effect on the process of controlling the attendance of employees being transferred to the biometric fingerprint system. Since the presence of the employee is not sufficient to ensure that, s/he performs his/her duties, it is important to find out how much loyalty and commitment the employees have for doing their duties at the optimal level. Besides, the large size of institutions, wide scope of its work, and work continuity all day long across the continents, requires programming their staff attendance/departure in a way that ensures equality and avoids bias. Hence, the current study seeks to explore the attitudes of the Omani Sultan Qaboos University employees, especially those working at the Center of Information Systems (CIS) and the Center of Education Technology (CET) towards the implementation of the biometric fingerprint system as one control type, as well as revealing the organizational loyalty among the employees of both centers. To achieve the objectives of the study, the descriptive method is used. A questionnaire was designed and include two parts: the first consists of (25) items aiming to measure the attitudes of the employees toward the implementation of the electronic fingerprint system, and the second part contains (19) items measuring employees commitment toward the organization. The reliability coefficient was calculated using Cronbach’s alpha and was (0.887) for the attitudes and (0.855) for the organizational commitment.
The results showed the mean average of the employee’s attitudes in the CIS and CET towards biometric fingerprint system was (2.95), while the mean average of the organizational commitment was (2.99).
The results of the t-test showed that there were no statistically significant differences (α = 0.05) between the respondents’ perspectives due to gender, job type, nor workplace variables. The Pearson correlation coefficient (r) was calculated and showed a positive relationship with statistically significant correlation (α = 0.01) between the respondents’ attitudes toward biometric fingerprint system and the emotional organizational commitment (0.601), continuous commitment (0.454), normative commitment (0.525) and total organizational commitment (0.611).
Giving the results of the study, a number of recommendations have been proposed such as disseminating the culture of implementing the biometric fingerprint system, its efficient use and confidence in its abilities in order to minimize institutional resistance and increase trust in administration. By this, the institutions may raise the employee’s commitment, loyalty, and increase their respect toward work attendance regulations.
