Autonomous Traffic Offloading in Heterogeneous Ultra-Dense Networks Using Machine Learning

The scarcity of network resources and the contention between resources and traffic volume have been the most critical network performance bottlenecks due to the booming growth of various applications in mobile Internet and Internet of Things. Consequently, effectively matching traffic with resources is of great importance and poses significant challenges. The 5G mobile communications networks ... [Show full abstract] will be heterogeneous, dense, and smart with various resources autonomously matching with the traffic demands. Although various traffic offloading schemes have been extensively investigated, applications in 5G present new characteristics such as interference-awareness on licensed or unlicensed bands, autonomous spectrum utilization, and delay-tolerant or delay sensitive traffic. In this article, we focus on HUDNs, which comprise dense small cells on the licensed band, WiFi AP on the unlicensed band, D2D communications, and V2V communications coexisting together to address the ever-increasing performance demands on both the user and network sides. We first summarize the recent research findings in this area and the technical challenges. We further present emerging traffic offloading frameworks and discuss the implementation issues including traffic offloading from virtualization, user-centric caching, and network selection in V2V communications. Furthermore, we propose an autonomous traffic offloading scheme based on big data and machine learning and also highlight future research directions.

Cognitive radio (CR) is a potential approach to ... [Show full abstract] alleviate the spectrum scarcity problem through opportunistic exploitation of the underutilized spectrum. However, highly dynamic topology and time-varying spectrum states in CR-based vehicular networks introduce quite a few challenges to be addressed. Moreover, a variety of vehicular communication modes, such as vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) and vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V), as well as data QoS requirements pose critical issues on efficient transmission scheduling. Based on this motivation, in this paper, we adopt a deep Q-learning approach for designing an optimal data transmission scheduling scheme in cognitive vehicular networks to minimize transmission costs while also fully utilizing various communication modes and resources. Furthermore, we investigate the characteristics of communication modes and spectrum resources chosen by vehicles in different network states, and propose an efficient learning algorithm for obtaining the optimal scheduling strategies. Numerical results are presented to illustrate the performance of the proposed scheduling schemes.

These two categories entail a variety of communication channels, network topologies, vehicle densities and communication scenarios, and in response to this, IEEE has released the IEEE 802.11p and IEEE 1609 protocols for VANETs. With the global commercial application of Long Term Evolution (LTE) mobile communication systems, LTE based vehicular (LTE-V) networks have been shown to offer advantages in V2I communications, coverage, high mobility and complicated communication scenarios. Therefore, in the 5th generation’s (5G) mobile communication networks, the 3GPP is discussing V2V communications as a device-to-device (D2D) communication application. As is well known, in high mobility scenarios, the wireless channel is rapidly time- varying, Doppler shifts and spreads can be much larger than in cellular, network topology can change quickly, and switching among base stations and vehicles is more frequent. All this presents formidable challenges to realizing reliable communications with low latency in 5G LTE-V systems.

[Show full abstract] if each vehicle tries to solve these problems individually. Vehicular communications has some distinct characters such as fast moving, short lived and opportunistic connections. Recently literatures in this area is growing rapidly. The main focus in on studying how to advance and evaluate the traditional communication protocols and algorithms so as to be more effective in communicating information among those fast moving vehicles. Unfortunately there is far less work to reveal how the underlie connectivity of wireless network topological can affect the overlay communications behaviors. The vehicles’ communications behavior is not merely a function of message transmission or the wireless communications technologies, but also it is a network-wide role and organization. The wireless ties that link a vehicle to other vehicles are also a critical factor. In this paper, we are paving a new line of research on revealing the roles of network topological characters in vehicular communications. This novel research dimension is thought-provoking and opening a new conversation for researchers working in this area to rethink and redesign the communications protocols by also considering the topological connectivity related parameters.

This paper proposes a new solution to defend against the Sybil attack, without requiring expensive cryptographic key-distribution. Our core contribution is a novel algorithm implemented on commercial Wi-Fi radios that can "sense" spoofers using the physics of wireless signals. We derive theoretical guarantees on how this algorithm bounds the impact of the Sybil Attack on a broad class of robotic coverage problems. We experimentally validate our claims using a team of AscTec quadrotor servers and iRobot Create ground clients, and demonstrate spoofer detection rates over 96%.

Visible light communication (VLC) is based on modulating inexpensive LEDs that are simultaneously used for illumination. This dual-use approach can offer energy-efficient connectivity as well as high throughput due to the huge unregulated optical spectrum. [Show full abstract] range from mobile Wi-Fi alternatives for large indoor spaces to vehicular communication networks. Although the potential benefits are phenomenal, there are also substantial limitations that must be considered and resolved to best take advantage of the technology. VLC systems suffer from the limited modulation bandwidth of inexpensive LEDs in addition to intersymbol-interference imposed by channel multipath. Spatial reuse requires complex distribution networks that create data transmission bottlenecks. Lighting features must be preserved, further restricting the VLC system. In this talk we explore the potential of this new technology within the context of practical limitations, and present some visions for the future of VLC.
