Exploring Smartphone Addiction in Terms of Different Variables

Authors:

Abstract

The development in information and communication technologies (ICT) have changed people's life in a variety of ways. For example, being a portable technology, smartphones have been an indispensable part of the human life. Although smartphones offer many affordances, they also pose many risks. Recently, smartphone addiction has become a serious issue, which is attracting considerable interest among researchers. Correspondingly, a bunch of literature has been developed on this issue. However, there is still considerable controversy surrounding predictors of smartphone addiction. Therefore, this cross sectional survey study aims to explore predictors of smartphone addiction in terms of the big five personality traits and demographic factors. To this end, data were collected from 494 university students at a public university located in the Aegean region of Turkey. The Big Five Inventory and Smartphone Addiction Scale were used as data collection tools. To analyze the data, hierarchical multiple linear regression analyses were employed. Results indicated that gender did not predict smartphone addiction. On the other hand, daily average smartphone usage (hours) and daily average internet use significantly contributed to the prediction of the model. Results also put forth that after controlling for the individual differences (demographics), the big five personality traits significantly predicted smartphone addiction. Results were discussed based on the theory and some implications were suggested. Anahtar Kelimeler : Smartphone addiction, big five personality traits, smartphone usage
