SIGUCCS mentoring program: one year later

The first year of the SIGUCCS Mentoring Program will be coming to an end with a dinner at this fall's conference. It will be a chance for the mentors, mentees and advisory team to meet, some for the first time, and celebrate the completion of goals and successful relationships. With goals reached and relationships developed, the teams will end their formal mentoring sessions and a new group of ... [Show full abstract] members will embark on their own journeys in the upcoming year. The advisory team, Beth Rugg, Brian Allen, Dan Herrick, Karen McRitchie, Christine Vucinich, and Mark Zocher, have been successful at implementing the processes of selection and matching partners, orientation, and on-going support for the pairs. At this year's conference, they will be presenting a paper on the development, implementation, and support of the program. This is an excerpt from the paper, which will be in the ACM Digital Library after the conference for all members.

The assessment process for the California Award for Performance Excellence (CAPE) provides organizations with an integrated, results-oriented framework for implementing and assessing processes for managing all operations. A key element of running an effective evaluation of the applicant's organization is the ability to utilize the unique knowledge and skills of all the examiners in the assessment ... [Show full abstract] team. This paper looks at the skills and techniques senior examiners utilize to transfer learning among their assessment teams. Using interviews, observations, personal participation and relevant documents, a theory of the successful senior examiner as a mentor was developed following the principles of "grounded theory." Key findings are that mentoring can lead to the development of skills where training courses often fall short. It is also shown how mentoring has had an impact on the examination process and the award process as well as on individuals.

This article proposes the triangular model of ... [Show full abstract] mentor competence as a preliminary framework for conceptualizing specific components of faculty competence in the mentor role. The triangular model includes mentor character virtues and intellectual/emotional abilities, as well as knowledge and skills (competencies) that are seen as expressions of training and experience. The article concludes with discussion of the implications of this model for faculty hiring, training, and evaluation.

Building a bridge for students to transition from high-school to college

The Wright Science, Technology and Engineering Preparatory Program was initiated in 1988 to develop the education in science for the youth in city public schools which are mostly comprised of first-generation college and economically challenged students. The participating students upon successful completion of the program requirements while in 10 th grade are awarded full-tuition scholarship to ... [Show full abstract] pursue a bachelor's degree of their choice at our university. These high-school seniors while in 12 th grade attend a series of workshops designed to aid students in having a smooth transition to college. After these students graduate from high-school, in the summer they also attend a mentoring program designed to prepare them as mentors and role-models. Upon completion of the mentoring program, students participate in a week long academic advantage program to hone their math skills required for the first year of college. This paper presents in detail the model implemented along with our observations and findings.
