Text-Independent Speaker Recognition

In this chapter, we focus on the area of text-independent speaker verification, with an emphasis on unconstrained telephone conversational speech. We begin by providing ageneral likelihood ratio detection task framework to describe the various components in modern text-independent speaker verification systems. We next describe the general hierarchy of speaker information conveyed in the speech ... [Show full abstract] signal and the issues involved in reliably exploiting these levels of information for practical speaker verification systems. We then describe specific implementations of state-of-the-art text-independent speaker verification systems utilizing low-level spectral information and high-level token sequence information with generative and discriminative modeling techniques. Finally, we provide aperformance assessment of these systems using the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) speaker recognition evaluation telephone corpora.

Coherent Multi-Pattern Correlator and All-Optical Equalizer Enabling Simultaneous Equalization, Wave...

We experimentally demonstrate a tunable and reconfigurable optical correlator in conjugation with coherent detection to simultaneously search multiple patterns in BPSK/QPSK symbols at both 20 Gbaud and 31Gbuad symbol rates. We also demonstrated simultaneous equalization and 3-fold multicasting of coherent QPSK/8PSK signals after transmitting through 25-km SMF-28 fiber, in one system.

Towards a Comprehensive Survey of Register-based Variation in Spanish Syntax

This study is based on a recent 20 million word corpus of Modern Spanish (1900-1999), containing equivalent sizes of conversation, fiction, and non-fiction. To date, this is the only large, tagged corpus of Spanish that contains texts from a wide range of registers. Nearly 150 syntactic features were tagged, and the frequency of these features in the 20 different registers was calculated. This ... [Show full abstract] data is now freely available to researchers via the web. Researchers can examine the frequency of any of the 150 features across the 20 different registers, or examine which of the 150 features are more common in one register than in another. Hopefully this detailed data will be used by teachers and materials developers to provide students of Spanish with a more realistic and holistic view of register variation than has been possible to this point.
