The project main basic concept is to develop a Master’s degree program “eHealth” in New Bulgarian University with the expert knowledge, competencies, and experience of project partners. eHealth literacy combines facets of 6 different literacy skills and applies them to eHealth practice, promotion and care: traditional literacy, health literacy, information literacy, scientific literacy, media literacy, and computer literacy.

Methods: This cross-sectional study was carried out by 476 trained undergraduate students in Bartin University, Turkey. We used a questionnaire, Health Literacy Scale, E-health Literacy Scale in Adolescents, Digital Literacy Scale, and Scale of Media and Television Literacy Levels for data collection tools. Results: The eHEALS score did not significantly differ according to sociodemographic characteristics of students. Multiple linear regression analysis found that digital literacy, the addition of media and television, literacy of media and television, and health literacy significantly affect electronic health literacy. Conclusion: To increase students’ digital and media literacy will provide a significant contribution to improve their eHealth literacy skills to be healthier adults and older adults in their future life. Additionally, it is recommended that curriculum should include courses that develop students’ digital literacy levels.

Attitudes to Telemedicine, and Willingness to Use in Young People

The goal of this study is to investigate the willingness of young people in Bulgaria to search and use health information from Internet sources, and the factors that influenced their decision to participate in telemedicine. [Show full abstract] 888 people participated, but we focused on the answers from 683 students from 6 universities in Bulgaria who were surveyed from October 2018 to January 2019. There were 513 female and 170 male respondents. Most of the participants (50%) define themselves with good level of computer literacy and 67% answer that they use a computer every day. 46% of the participants confirm that they search for health information on the Internet whenever they needed such information and 58% search for information on drugs and drug effects. Of those surveyed, only 26% were willing to use telemedicine if the information is secured and 33% totally exclude that as an option.

Circumstances Related to the Reporting of Bad News in the Medical Profession

In the medical profession, communicating bad news about a malignant formation is often associated with experience, obstacles, and problems faced by the medical professionals and related to the communication with the patient. Our survey included 232 medical specialists - doctors and nurses with diverse internship in the profession and working in Bulgarian healthcare facilities. It aimed to find: ... [Show full abstract] (i) the most common difficulty in communicating the bad news to cancer patients, (ii) the most difficult aspects of that information, and (iii) the specific words the medical professionals prefer to avoid when communicating the bad news. Also, the medical specialists were asked about the factors with the largest interference with the disclosure of the bad news to the patients. The survey results show that only 66 percent of the medical professionals are ready to respond directly and definitively to the question from the patient if he/she has cancer. Almost all of the surveyed medical specialists believed that the most difficult part of communicating the bad news was related to the prognosis of the disease and the survival expectancy; many of the medical professionals preferred to avoid the word "cancer", and the fatality of the disease was the most common barrier in communicating bad news, followed by the relatives’ negative position towards bringing up the bad news to the patient, and the low level of patient’s education and the short life expectancy. The study shows the need for support and training of the medical professionals in addressing bad news situations and the importance of the protocols with guidelines and steps to be performed during that communication.
