Abstract and Figures

Motivation is one of the most essential factors in the formation of behavior. This study aimed to evaluate the direct and indirect effects of motivation as well as other selected variables on readiness for exclusive breastfeeding. This was a cross-sectional study assessing the association of knowledge, access to information, social, cultural, and readiness of pregnant women to exclusive breastfeeding, with motivation as an intermediate variable. The data analysis technique used is path analysis. The study found that social and cultural factors (X3) improve knowledge (β=0.368) but do not affect access to information (β=0.151). All knowledge, information access and socio-cultural factor directly affect the motivation of pregnant women to give exclusive breastfeeding: X1 - Y1 with a value of β=0.264. X2 - Y1 with a value of β=0.316, and X3 - Y1 with avalue of β=0.284 while the motivation of pregnant women significantly influences the readiness in exclusive, breastfeeding with the value β=0.333. So it can be concluded that knowledge, access to information, and social and cultural factors could directly and indirectly influence the readiness of pregnant mothers in exclusive breastfeeding. The indirect effect is mediated by the motivation of pregnant women in breastfeedingexclusively.

Women who prepare early will be better prepared both physically and psychologically to breastfeed exclusively. The purpose of this research was to determine whether the motivation variable as a mediator of the relation between knowledge of exclusive breastfeeding with readiness to exclusive breastfeeding. The study was observational, A total of 150 respondents, These three variables, namely knowledge, motivation, and readiness in exclusive breastfeeding, measured by the enclosed questionnaire. Correlation between variables was analyzed with path analysis. The relation between variables in all three models was significant (p <0.001), whereas the relation between knowledge and preparedness in exclusive breastfeeding is not significant (1b '= 0.142; p = 0.092). The relation between knowledge and preparedness in exclusive breastfeeding changed from the first model, into the fourth model. Besides there is a decline in the path coefficient of 0,302 became 0,142, the relation also becomes insignificant. This shows that the fourth mediation relationship condition is fulfilled. Pregnant women motivation exclusively breastfed mediates the relationship between knowledge of exclusive breastfeeding with maternal readiness in exclusive breastfeeding.

The objectives of this cross-sectional study were to define the possible determinants of early initiation and exclusivity of breastfeeding and to assess knowledge towards breastfeeding among Saudi mothers in Al Hassa, Saudi Arabia. Six hundred forty-one Saudi mothers with singleton infants approximately 24 months old attending well-baby clinics at four urban and six rural primary health care centers were selected through the multistage sampling method. Eligible mothers were invited to a personal interview using pretested questionnaires to gather data regarding sociodemographics, health-related variables, breastfeeding initiation, and current breastfeeding practices and to assess mothers' knowledge about breastfeeding. Breastfeeding was initiated by 77.8% of mothers within the first 24 hours of childbirth. Exclusive breastfeeding at birth was reported in 76.1%, which declined to 32.9% and 12.2% at the age of 2 and 6 months, respectively. Increased maternal age, multiparity (three or more children), and vaginal delivery were significant positive predictors for early breastfeeding initiation as revealed by stepwise logistic forward regression. Rural, less-educated, low-income multiparous mothers were more likely to exclusively breastfed their infants as revealed by multivariate logistic regression. Irrespective of educational status, surveyed mothers demonstrated several misconceptions towards breastfeeding. Furthermore, early initiations and exclusivity were significantly influenced by sociodemographics, especially maternal educational and employment status. The rate of initiation and exclusivity of breastfeeding in Al Hassa is far below the World Health Organization recommendations.

To identify the prevalence of breast-feeding at discharge and the determinants of breast-feeding initiation amongst Aboriginal women. A prospective cohort study using a self-administered baseline questionnaire and telephone-administered follow-up interviews. Six hospitals with maternity wards in Perth, Western Australia. Four hundred and twenty-five Aboriginal mothers of newborn infants. At discharge, 89.4% of Aboriginal mothers were breast-feeding. Breast-feeding at discharge was most positively associated with perceived paternal support of breast-feeding, with an adjusted odds ratio (OR) of 6.65 (95% confidence interval (CI) 2.81-15.74), and with maternal age (OR 1.12, 95% CI 1.03-1.22), but negatively associated with parity and having delivered vaginally. The factors independently associated with breast-feeding at discharge were similar to those previously identified for a group of non-Aboriginal Perth women, suggesting that separate breast-feeding interventions specially targeted at Aboriginal women are not warranted. The findings do, however, highlight the importance of including the father in the breast-feeding discussions.
