In this paper Henry Giroux, the US theorist of critical pedagogy, examines the treatment of immigrants in America likening it to fascism’s extreme nationalism. He draws a parallel between neoliberal capitalism and fascism to explain the suppression of freedom, anti-democratic sentiments and the growth of racism leading to a demonisation of the other. Giroux speaks to the formation of a form of “neoliberal fascism” under Trump and considers the horrors of the perpetration of state violence against children. He documents the way that Trump mobilises “fascist passions” to set up immigration detention camps that involves the separation of children from their parents. [Ed.]

But even if we know why we need it, what do we want it to be or need it to be? What do we want a resistance studies network to look like? For me there are 4 key things I would like resistance studies to do. These highlight both the hope of the way forward and some dangers of which we need to be aware.

[Show full abstract] combat and/or detect extremism or does such information gathering practices violate the user's right to freedom of expression and privacy? Should government agencies carry out the surveillance or should the ISP as provider of access and/or hosting of information gather information on extremist communication? Will the aftermath of the 2013 Snowden revelations of unwarranted, general and bulk state surveillance result in governments being wary to tighten state surveillance powers or has the level of extremism reached such a degree that it warrants governments to focus on monitoring as a surveillance method counteracting radicalism that may endanger the safety and security of a country. Tension between human rights protection and government use of surveillance powers is unavoidable as some argue that security and safety factors are exaggerated to justify extension of state surveillance powers, however the evidence of extremism unfortunately speaks for itself. This discussion provides an overview of the approach to surveillance a government may apply to online extremism.

[Show full abstract] ‘harmony’ of 400,000 Andaman residents. The state-directed rehabilitation of 3652 East Bengal Hindu refugee families as agricultural pioneers on forest lands was influenced by secularist policies. As a result, Bengali settlers—coming both after Partition and the 1971 war—have adapted to their new homelands by appropriating the values, norms and practices of Mini-India. Moreover, their place-making processes have been accompanied by an ethno-history composed of a nostalgia for their lost homelands in Sonar Bangla (Golden Bengal) as well as memories of violence and deprivation. Refugee settlers thus display a hybrid diasporic belonging encompassing both localised ‘Indian-ness’ and trans-local ‘Bengali-ness’. My chapter will highlight the ways in which the trope of Bengal becomes efficacious in the present Andaman society. I will concentrate on three dimensions of memorisation: first, Andaman ‘Bengali-ness’ can be regarded as a dynamic sociocultural and ecological reconstruction involving an ‘ethnic’ transformation of the cultivated landscape, environment and infrastructure. Second, Bengalis adopt a political identification as nationalists by invoking the hegemonic memory of the anti-colonial struggle focussing on the infamous Andaman Cellular Jail as a site where Bengali freedom fighters suffered for the nation. Third, they refer to historical victimisation and deprivation when claiming affirmative action.

Speaking the unspeakable: the role of speech in a pedagogy of critical whiteness

[Show full abstract] students’ and teachers’ critical race consciousness, and provides an initial framework for deconstructing hegemonic white identity. I argue that Vygotsky’s understanding of the unity of speech and thinking, contribute to a pedagogy of critical whiteness, and function foundationally, transculturally and cognitively. While the role of speech and theory of discomfort are formative of critical race consciousness, they are not a panacea, but potentially keys to unlock other possibilities of enacting white identity as a student and as an educator in the context of schooling.

Building a Small Cinema: Resisting Neoliberal Colonization in Liverpool

[Show full abstract] entailed the privatization of vast tracts of public space. Conversely, the building, functioning, and general praxis of the Small Cinema project suggests a mode of practice that more accurately fits within the paradigm of a collaborative commons than a capitalist marketplace. The project’s exemption from market criteria grants it the freedom to pursue public over private goods, thereby constituting a point of resistance to the ongoing neoliberalization of the city and changes to government policy that make it increasingly difficult for non-profit projects to exist. Historically speaking, cinemas have been accessible to the working class in a way that other artistic media have not. However, while the history of film as a tool for political subversion is well documented, less attention has been paid to the physical construction of independent cinematic space, its programming/running, and its potential as a node of resistance to neoliberal colonization. This paper uses the case study of the Small Cinema project in Liverpool as a means by which to understand how cinematic spaces can counteract the effects of policies that continue to have such a detrimental impact on the arts and education, as well as social health and well-being.

Joseph Smith believed there was something rotten at the heart of America, but, being an uneducated farm boy from western New York, he had no way to express his anger in a manner that would allow him to be taken seriously. He could only be an ‘authority’ with regard to religion, and religious authority, being ubiquitous, was no authority at all. Smith tracks the way the American public sphere forced its marginalized persons to criticize it from a disadvantageous position, and the way those critiques were turned to the establishment’s advantage. For Joseph Smith, freedom of speech in America has always been a tool of the political elites to keep the poor from speaking effectively.

[Show full abstract] somewhat haphazard outward appearance, homegrown terrorist cells often possess a remarkable shared connection through reliance on particular al Qaeda training manuals, audio and video recordings, and even Internet chat forums. While these young men (and, increasingly, women) may have no formal contact with any terrorist organization, they can become virtual partners of al Qaeda by carefully studying its online knowledge base and executing terrorist attacks against its enemies. Recent law enforcement investigations have uncovered a surprisingly sophisticated network of budding terrorist “entrepreneurs” lurking in a host of major cities across Europe and North America.

This paper examines how the photo-series By an Eye Witness (2009—2012) in which Azadeh Akhlaghi (b.1978) re-stages deaths of Iranian freedom fighters of the 20th century can be understood as an attempt to cure a specific historical trauma among Iranians. By interviewing the artist and contextualizing the artwork with different trauma theories, Iranian ... [Show full abstract] history and the current daily life, I am demonstrating, that the trauma Akhlaghi is addressing consists of the repetitive killings of dissidents in the country’s last century. This cycle of violence was never interrupted, because there was no chance to speak about the trauma itself openly. Akhlaghi is attempting to cure this trauma by narrating the traumatic events on images that were exhibited in a public gallery in Tehran. This allows viewers to discuss and mourn the artworks´’ protagonists collectively and actively and therefore provides a chance to come to terms with their unfinished past.
