This paper examined the roles of women cooperatives in economic development in Rivers State. The objective of the study were to: determined the activities and achievements of women as cooperative members in the process of economic development in Rivers state, determine the role of women cooperatives in empowerment and poverty reduction in the process of economic development in in the study area and ascertain the perception of people toward the role of women cooperatives in the process of economic development in Rivers State. The research design used for this study was survey research design. The population of this study consisted of all women in co-operative societies in the 5 chosen Local Government Areas in Rivers State which include Port Harcourt, Ahoada/ Onelga, Bonny, Khana and Eleme respectively. There were a total number of one hundred and two (102) registered women cooperative societies. The sample of this study was made up of three hundred (300) respondents randomly selected from five (5) Local Government Areas of Rivers State. From each of the Local Government Area two (2) cooperatives were chosen, making a total of ten (10) cooperatives. The Chi-square result shows that the X2Cal, 12.7 > X2 Tab., 5.50. The results indicate that women role in cooperatives has a significant relationship with economic development in Rivers state. Based on the results, the study recommends that Co-operative education programmes should be introduced in cooperatives to encouraged full participation of women in social and economic activities for awareness

How to test predications of models based on theoretical analysis from optimising models in micro or macro, finance or business related fields of economics using empirical evidence using basic econometric or statistical or applied general equilibrium or strategic analyses is discussed and illustrated. It is argued that a researcher need to be more open and comprehensive while thinking about alternative research techniques applicable to analysis of a particular issue under consideration. Aim of this workbook is to complement to the programme in order to achieve an excellence in research methods required for various fields including economics, finance, business, marketing or management in the academic environment of a Business School. In developing countries, among the poor, rural women are the poorest and more vulnerable. Cooperatives can be used as breeding grounds for socio-economic empowerment of women. To this light, the major concern of this study is to analyze and assess the role of cooperatives in promoting socio-economic empowerment of women. Both primary and secondary sources of data were used for this study. Primary data were collected through interviews, questionnaires and focus group discussions and secondary data were collected from internal documents of the cooperatives. Out of the target group 75 multipurpose cooperative societies (MPCs), the researchers purposively selected MPCs established before 2005. Out of the selected target group MPCs, 25% were randomly selected and 30% of women members were also selected randomly. Nevertheless, the collected data is analyzed using descriptive statistics. The results of the study indicated that women participation in cooperatives is very limited. More than 80% of the respondents are involved in farm activity and only 5% are engaged in paid work. 90% of the respondents have joined their cooperatives to access financial sources and improve their bargaining power. Nevertheless, the results reveal that women members have improved their income, livestock holdings, autonomous decision making and spending power after joining their cooperatives, but, its regularity is limited. Participation in important affairs and management positions of their cooperatives level and access to training of the women members is still limited and hence governmental and non-governmental organizations need to consider gender equality in their cooperative members’ capacity building programs.

The study is an assessment of the effectiveness of Cooperatives in Agricultural credit delivery in Ikpoba-Okha Local Government Area, Edo State, Nigeria. It identified the socio economic characteristics of the cooperative societies assess farmers' access to cooperative loans, determine the arrival rate of loan requests and the service rate, idle time and traffic intensity of the cooperative societies in order to assess their overall effectiveness in credit delivery. Primary data was sourced with the aid of a well structured questionnaire. The information was analysed using descriptive statistics and Queue model. The result showed that Cooperatives received loan request, have overall approval rate of 99.16%, arrival rate of 43, service rate of 43 per month which resulted in a traffic intensity of 1.01 and Idle time of -0.01. Empirical results showed that, the Cooperatives were effective in Credit Delivery.

The study investigated the relationship between membership of Co-operative Societies by women farmers and their adoption behavior. It covered Oke-ogun area of Oyo State; which comprises eleven Local Government Areas. Three Local Government Areas were purposefully selected. A total of One hundred and fifty five respondents were randomly interviewed through structured interview schedule in proportion to the number of women farmers in each sampled farming communities in the selected Local Government Areas. Result obtained shows significant relationship between membership of Co-operative societies and adoption of improved cassava varieties by women farmers in the area of study. Also, positive and significant relationship were found between membership of cooperative and demographic-socio-economic characteristics such as number of children assisting in farm work (r = 0.373); sources of credit (r = 0.675). Membership of cooperative societies is very significant to favorable adoption behavior of women farmers towards agricultural innovations, hence should be encouraged as a strategy for improving the agricultural productivity and livelihoods of the women farmers, which is crucial to the achievement of sustainable rural development in Nigeria.

This study examined the pattern of saving and investment among four hundred cooperative farmers in southwestern Nigeria. Data were collected using structured questionnaires. Data were analysed using descriptive statistics and multiple regression technique. Results show that cooperative farmers in southwestern Nigeria are mostly males, literate and of average age of 47 years. About 40% of total capital borrowed was expended on farm work and mean annual total investment was N75,043.00, with cooperative farmers earning more than 3 times the investment made. Average annual savings was N31,572.00 and this increased in proportion to annual incomes in the area. However, the unavailability and inadequacy of credit was a major problem of the farmers. Different factors influenced cooperative farmers’ saving and investment patterns. Income, loan repayment and amount of money borrowed were significant variables that influenced saving patterns while the fund borrowed significantly influenced investment patterns. These factors therefore have to be considered in designing strategies aimed at improving the saving and investment patterns of cooperative farmers in southwestern Nigeria. Additionally, the saving and investment level of the cooperative farmers can be enhanced if loans are adequately made available and proper supervision and monitoring of funds for specified production purposes are put in place.

The study examined the socio-economic factors affecting women's participation in agricultural co-operatives in Gwoza Local Government Area, Borno State. Data for the study were derived from three purposively selected communities (Gwoza, Ngoshe and Pulka). Forty respondents were randomly selected from each of the three communities giving a total of 120. Tools for the analyses were percentages and Chi-Square (χ2), used to test existence of relationships between level of participation and socio-economic characteristics of respondents, and correlation analysis, used to test cause-effect relationship between socio-economic variables and some indicators of cooperative activities. The results showed that majority of respondents (82%) were between 30 and 40 years and married (76%). About 41% attended up to secondary school level of education while 4% attended tertiary education. More than half (52%) were involved in micro processing with about 79% having annual income not exceeding N60,000. Membership in co-operative societies ranked 93%, 73% and 21%, respectively for thrift and credit, processing, and marketing co-operatives. Major benefits derived by members included access to loans (87%), input provision (77%) and product marketing (50%). Cultural beliefs (82%) and low level of education (57%) were found to be the major problems militating against women participation in co-operatives. Relationships between socio-economic variables and women participation in co-operatives were significant for age, education and primary occupation as revealed by Chi-square analysis tested at 5% level . Correlation analysis also revealed positive and significant relationships between socio-economic variables and participation in/benefits of cooperatives. The study established a high potential for enhancing economic growth in co-operatives in spite of the attendant problems. It was therefore recommended that women be given more access to education as this would go a long way in removing some of the barriers to effective participation. A study of farmers' perception of cooperative societies was carried out in Enugu State. The objectives included the establishment of the reasons for joining cooperatives, the extent to which cooperatives provided the needs of farmer-members in the state and the identification of problems that hindered the development of farmers' cooperative societies and the suggested solutions. A total of 2000 farmers randomly selected from 10 out of the 17 local government areas in the state were used as respondents for the study. Survey tools used in the study included structured questionnaire, focus group discussions and interview schedules. Simple analytical tools like tables and percentage were used to analyze data. Findings showed that most of the farmers (5.25%) that joined cooperatives did so to attract services from government thereby perceiving cooperatives as government agency rather than an autonomous business outfit. About 75% of respondents who joined cooperatives received assistance from government through their cooperatives. Poor cooperative education and illiteracy were perceived to be the greatest hindrance to growth of cooperatives in the state. Most respondents (63.71%) agreed that the best way to improve their perception of cooperatives was through intensified cooperative education programmes.
