The Incarcerated Serious and Violent Young Offender Study

We are currently following a sample of approximately 1,400 individuals who were initially interviewed in adolescence while incarcerated within the province of British Columbia, Canada. Most of thes e youth are now between the ages of 23-40. Their criminal history information and various risk assessments have been coded over the course of this study. The study recently received four years of funding from Canada's Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council to continue coding repeated measurements of the Community Risk Needs Assessment instrument as well as other risk assessment tools currently used by criminal justice system practitioners in Canada. ... Transgender youth in clinical care: A pan-Canadian cohort study of medical, social and family outcomes

This project will study youth (puberty to age 15 at enrolment) who have been referred to ten Canadian clinics for puberty suppression and/or hormone therapy for gender identity issues. Where possib le, we will also collect data on their parents/caregivers. As a result of this research, we will know much more about the youth who are referred for gender issues and their families, including their previous care, gender identities, family dynamics, social stressors, and factors that affect their health and well-being. We will understand more about medical and mental health outcomes for youth undergoing puberty suppression and other medical interventions, and identify factors that may result in better outcomes, for example age at which treatment is started, type of treatment, or level of parental support. We will also learn about treatment side effects. We will know more about gender and sex development among these youth, and how their physical, mental and social health develops. In addition, we will study how family functioning and parent/caregiver’s well-being may change over time. This article offers a brief foray into various change theories and provides examples of how these change theories direct and inform practice with youth and families at the Maples Adolescent Centre in British Columbia, Canada. This article suggests that systemic interventions are necessary to support enduring change in individuals and provides examples of how this is actualized with families and communities at the Maples Adolescent Centre. It concludes by advocating for the use of multiple theoretical orientations to direct child and youth care practitioners work as change agents.

Ways of Learning Leadership Advancing Leaders in Engineering: Ways of Learning Leadership

This paper explores the leadership practices of women engineers licensed in British Columbia, Canada and reports on a quantitative correlational study using the Leadership Practices Inventory to operationalize leadership and explore associations with levels of university education, executive coaching, years of engineering practice, and the location of practice as rural versus urban. The number of ... [Show full abstract] women leaders in Canadian corporations continues to increase, while the influence of women engineer leaders is less progressive. Growth in the fields of engineering leadership education, management education, and leadership education offered sufficient evidence to pursue research that furthered the leadership development of women engineers. In university engineering education inclusion of leadership education improved, while attention to leadership development for practicing professional women engineers remains sparse. The participants assessed their leadership practices and a correlational analysis will associate their leadership to levels of education programs, executive coaching, years of professional practices, and location of practice in terms of rural or urban. I conclude with a proposed conceptual framework for learning leadership.

Moose population dynamics during 20 years of declining harvest in British Columbia

Licenced harvest of moose (Alces alces) in British Columbia, Canada declined by approximately half over the 20-year period from 1996–2015. To better understand changes in moose populations coinciding with this period of declining harvest, we modelled population dynamics within 31 Game Management Zones (GMZs). [Show full abstract] licensed harvest to develop 4 competing statistical models to assess population dynamics based on constant parameters and temporal trends in calf:cow ratios at 6 months, juvenile survival from 6–18 months, or cow survival. The models indicated that moose populations declined (λ < 1) in 7 GMZs (23%) from 1996–2005 and in 22 GMZs (71%) from 2006–2015. Over the 20-year period, the best model was fit with declining trends in calf:cow ratios in 8 GMZs, declining juvenile survival in 6 GMZs, and declining cow survival in 8 GMZs. Population growth rate was slightly reduced in those GMZs where licenced antlerless (cow and calf) hunting occurred but was not considered the primary factor causing population decline. Total licenced bull harvest influenced bull:cow ratios that were significantly lower in 2006–2015 (x = 37:100) than 1995–2005 (x = 48:100); significant predictive relationships existed between harvest rates and bull:cow ratios. Provincial moose numbers and harvest were highly correlated (r = 0.81) suggesting that declining harvest was a reaction to declining population trends. We found that the provincial moose population increased 6% from 1996–2005, subsequently declined 32% from 2006–2015, and declined 29% overall during the 20-year study period.

Public Preference for Endemism over Other Conservation-Related Species Attributes

Public preferences are likely to play an important role in prioritizing species at risk for conservation. We conducted a survey of British Columbians (Canada) (n =555, r =73%) to examine how the public ranks a species' attributes (rather than named species) with respect to conservation priority. Endemism, defined as species only or mainly occurring in British Columbia or species occurring in ... [Show full abstract] British Columbia and nowhere else in Canada, was considered the most important among the measured attributes. This preference was strongest among men and among respondents who had completed postsecondary education. The preference for endemism is generally consistent with science-based federal listings of British Columbian species. This congruence between listing and public opinion is welcome if such congruence is considered important. We suggest that investigating how much the public values species' attributes, as opposed to named species, provides a more efficient way of incorporating public opinion into policies on species at risk, especially if large numbers of species must be ranked for conservation priority.
