PermaFoam is an OpenFOAM (openfoam.com) solver for cryohydrogeology. It solves coupled water and heat transfers in variably saturated porous media, considering freeze/thaw of the pore water. The main field of application is the modeling of permafrost thermo-hydrological dynamics. A first example of application may be found in the paper "Water and energy transfer modeling in a permafrost‐dominated, forested catchment of Central Siberia: The key role of rooting depth", by Orgogozo et al., published in 2019 in Permafrost and Periglacial Processes.

HiPerBorea: High Performance computing for quantifying climate change impacts on Boreal Areas (ANR funded project ANR-19-CE46-0003-01)

The objective of this project is to enable quantitative and predictive modeling of cold regions hydrosystems evolution under climate change. Arctic and sub-arctic areas, which are highly vulnerable to global warming, are largely covered by permafrost – soil that is year-round frozen at depth. Permafrost-affected areas, which represent 25% of emerged lands of the northern hemisphere, are prone to major biogeochemical and ecological transformations due to permafrost thaw, with strong associated feed-backs on greenhouse gas cycling (degradation of previously permanently frozen organic carbon pools). We will use advanced numerical modelling build on the permaFoam solver (the OpenFOAM solver for permafrost modelling, see Orgogozo et al., 2019) to help predict the impact of permafrost thaw on arctic thermo-hydrologic functioning. By doing so, we will provide mechanistic understanding of Arctic change, that is necessary to further understand carbon cycling and contaminant/nutrient transport, and to further assess risk and opportunity for sustainable urbanization, agriculture and general sustainable development of the (sub-)Arctic. Assessment of carbon dioxide assimilation by evergreen conifers of Siberia regarding to climate change

The aim of the project is to study the mechanisms of fixation, transport and storage of atmospheric carbon dioxide by the evergreen conifers in Krasnoyarsk region, Russian Federation. The fundament al objectives of the study include: 1. The study of the processes of atmospheric carbon photoassimilation, its transport and distribution in evergreen conifers (pine, spruce, fir), which are the main tree species of the Krasnoyarsk territory, by the methods of direct measurements of photosynthetic activity, by the definition of gross output and studying of photoassimilates distribution by method impulse label (13CO2); 2. [Show full abstract] tool in a high‐ performance computing toolbox for numerical simulation of fluid dynamics, OpenFOAM. In this region, the heterogeneity of solar exposure leads to strong contrasts in vegetation cover, which constitutes the main source of variability in hydrological conditions at the landscape scale. The uncalibrated numerical results reproduce reasonably well the measured soil temperature profiles and the dynamics of infiltrated waters revealed by previous biogeochemical studies. The impacts of thermo‐hydrological processes on water fluxes from the soils to the stream are discussed through a comparison between numerical results and field data. The impact of evapotranspiration on water fluxes is studied numerically, and highlights a strong sensitivity to variability in rooting depth and corresponding evapotranspiration at slopes of different aspect in the catchment.
