Abstract and Figures

This paper proposed a two factor authentication for vehicle access controls using Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) and Radio Frequency Identification system (RFID) for the University of Zambia (UNZA) vehicle access points. The University of Zambia is experiencing increasing challenge of car parking space and vehicle access controls to and within campus premises. The survey that was conducted reviewed that members of staff found difficulties finding parking spaces due to intrusion. The survey also reviewed that vehicles have been stolen within campus parking areas without detection. An access control system using integrated ANPR and RFID technologies was developed to provide five authentication states that met different vehicle access point’s requirement. It was built with ‘ORed’ and ‘ANDed’, logic settings to achieve five different states of authentication levels, each suited for a particular access point. The ANRP system used the vehicle number plate to authenticate the vehicle through the use of the camera. On the other hand, the RFID system used the drivers’ card/tag through the RFID card reader to authenticate the user. Daily transaction records were sent to the security center where information would easily be retrieved. Illegal access to restricted areas, threats of theft of motor vehicles and failed transaction recording system was amicably solved by this proposal.

... In auto-gate systems, the ANPR identifies the vehicle license plate number and compares it against a database of registered campus members, and the respective information such as the name of the vehicle owner, student or staff identification number, faculty name and telephone number can be retrieved and displayed automatically. This can be used as a cheaper access control method instead of using access cards or checking campus stickers which is costly, time consuming, and may lead to traffic congestion especially during peak hours [6]. With the aid of Google Cloud Vision, an API that uses machine learning models trained on a huge dataset of pictures that is accessible via API queries, licence plate numbers identified by the system may be captured and logged for future retrieval if the need arises. ...

Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) combines electronic hardware and complex computer vision software algorithms to recognize the characters on vehicle license plate numbers. Many researchers have proposed and implemented ANPR for various applications such as law enforcement and security, access control, border access, tracking stolen vehicles, tracking traffic violations, and parking management system. This paper discusses a live-video ANPR system using CNN developed on an Android smartphone embedded with a camera with limited resolution and limited processing power based on Malaysian license plate standards. In terms of system performance, in an ideal outdoor environment with good lighting and direct or slightly skewed camera angle, the recognition works perfectly with a computational time of 0.635 seconds. However, this performance is affected by poor lighting, extremely skewed angle of license plates, and fast vehicle movement.

In the light of the number of vehicles rising consistently and parking space is fast becoming a major issue in urban and semi urban cities so there is a need to design parallel parking.. It is essentially a stacked car park. Instead of car's parking on streets, a more modern and a fast operating parking-lot system have been developed. In this paper, a solution has been provided for the problems encountered in parking-lot management systems via RFID technology. The application of RFID technology in parking lots makes parking effective, convenient and safe. The RFID system is used to park the cars automatically in the multilevel parking area. The use of RFID tags, readers and antennas makes it easier to automate the 'in and out' privileges of parking subscribers. Personnel costs will be reduced considerably using this technology. It will be possible in the future to make unmanned, secure and atomized parking-lots functioning with RFID technology. Check-ins and check-outs will be handled in a faster manner without stopping the cars. By this the traffic jam problem will be avoided during parking. Drivers will not have to stop at the circulation points. The ticket jamming problems for the ticket processing machines will be avoided as well.

Pyroelectric infrared (PIR) sensors are widely used as a presence trigger, but the analog output of PIR sensors depends on several other aspects, including the distance of the body from the PIR sensor, the direction and speed of movement, the body shape and gait. In this paper, we present an empirical study of human movement detection and idengification using a set of PIR sensors. We have developed a data collection module having two pairs of PIR sensors orthogonally aligned and modified Fresnel lenses. We have placed three PIR-based modules in a hallway for monitoring people; one module on the ceiling; two modules on opposite walls facing each other. We have collected a data set from eight subjects when walking in three different conditions: two directions (back and forth), three distance intervals (close to one wall sensor, in the middle, close to the other wall sensor) and three speed levels (slow, moderate, fast). We have used two types of feature sets: a raw data set and a reduced feature set composed of amplitude and time to peaks; and passage duration extracted from each PIR sensor. We have performed classification analysis with well-known machine learning algorithms, including instance-based learning and support vector machine. Our findings show that with the raw data set captured from a single PIR sensor of each of the three modules, we could achieve more than 92% accuracy in classifying the direction and speed of movement, the distance interval and idengifying subjects. We could also achieve more than 94% accuracy in classifying the direction, speed and distance and idengifying subjects using the reduced feature set extracted from two pairs of PIR sensors of each of the three modules.

The recent years have seen a rise in the number of cases of cyber-crime committed through identity theft and fraud. To address this problem, this paper uses adaptive neural-fuzzy inference system, fuzzy logic and artificial neural network to implement a multifactor authentication system through a technique of information fusion. To begin with, the identity attributes are mined using the three corpora from three major sources namely the social networks, a set of questionnaires and application forms from the various services offered both in the real and cyberspace. The statistical information generated by the corpora is then used to compose an identity attribute metric model. The composed identity attributes metrics values classified as biometrics, device metrics and pseudo metrics are then fused at the score level through a technique of information fusion in a multifactor authentication system by using each of the above artificial intelligence technologies and the results compared.

This paper introduces a hybrid system for vehicle access control using RFID and automatic license plate recognition (ALPR) technologies. RFID technology is proven to provide an effective solution to different tracking and localization problems. However, the technology has its shortcomings in tracking objects/users without a tag. As such, we propose to complement this technology with ALPR to control the access of different types of vehicles to the area of Makkah (Saudi Arabia) during Pilgrimage seasons. This limited area can easily get congested with the huge number of vehicles attempting access. Before the start of the season, vehicles authorized to access the region are assigned passive RFID tags specifying their allowed schedule of entry. Violating vehicles that do not have RFID tags are detected and identified using ALPR. The developed system was tested over two pilgrimage seasons. The experiments showed that the developed RFID system was able to identify all passing vehicles with speeds up to 100 km/h, while the ALPR system achieved 94 % recognition accuracy of vehicles not equipped with RFID tags.

Day by day we have been heard about the news of vehicle getting stolen from parking or from any other place in the city. So, to keep track of that stolen vehicle we should have to install the CCTV camera on every signal in the city. Also we have to install the number plate detection system which can detect the number plate of every vehicle on the traffic signal. For detecting the number plate from the moving vehicle there are many algorithm has been developed but still this area always remain evolving each every year, In number plate detection system image processing plays an important role, the system consist of basic operations preprocessing, image conversion from RGB to Gray, apply edge detection, apply morphological operators on same image then extract plate region from image and last process the plate region using OCR (optical character recognition).Every algorithm in this category always follows this basic steps, each algorithm has some pros and cons, because same algorithm cannot be useful for different environmental condition. The Algorithm’s efficiency is totally depends upon the quality of input image. E.g. resolution of camera, intensity of the image, illumination of image, shadow effect etc. In this paper we are focusing on which are different algorithm has been developed so far to improve the efficiency of the number plate detection system.
