Abstract

Conflicts do not emerge from nothingness, most of them happen due to problems of communication, institutional structure, and differences of interests and to deal with its effectively and appropriately, conflicts need several basic skills and different strategies. Therefore, in order to choose the best strategy for dealing with conflict, there is a need to assess the nature of the conflict, its dynamics, the causes of its occurrence, its actors, and expect its possible outcomes. In addition, understanding the different ways for dealing with conflicts, including the most favored methods by the parties to resolve the conflict, and determining the best approach of the other party in conflict resolution, it is often necessary to deal effectively with the emotional aspects of conflicts before trying to reach a rational solution. Sometimes, you may need to stimulate the conflict to reach the best results in the long term. Studying these issues (the strategic environment of the conflict) is the best way to help the decision maker to outline the best strategy for dealing with the conflict. الصراعات لا تظهر من فراغ، وأغلبها يرجع لمشكلات التواصل و الهيكل المؤسسي والاختلافات المصلحية. وتحتاج الصراعات إلى عدة مهارات أساسية واستراتيجيات مختلفة حتى يتم التعامل معها بالشكل السليم والفعال. ولكي يتم انتقاء الاستراتيجية الامثل للتعامل مع الصراع هناك حاجة ضرورية لتقييم طبيعة الصراع، وديناميته، واسباب حدوثه، و الاطراف الفاعلة فيه، وتوقع نتائجه. فضلا عن، فهم أساليب التعامل المختلفة مع الصراعات بما في ذلك أكثر الأساليب التي تفضلها اطراف الصراع، وتحديد أفضل أسلوب يفضله الطرف الآخر في حل الصراعات و التأكيد عليه، فمن الضروري غالباً التعامل بشكل فعال مع النواحي العاطفية للصراعات قبل محاولة الوصول إلى حل عقلاني. وقد تكون هناك بعض الأوقات التي تحتاج فيها إلى تحفيز الصراع للوصول لأفضل النتائج على المدى الطويل. لذا فان دراسة هذه الامور (البيئة الاستراتيجية للصراع) هي السبيل الامثل لمساعدة صانع القرار على وضع الخطوط العامة للاستراتيجية الامثل للتعامل مع الصراع.



Supplier selection is a multiple criteria decision making (MCDM) problem which is affected by several conflicting factors. In the business market of flaming competition in recent years, more attention has been paid to this problem. In this paper, a two-phased model is proposed for supplier selection and order allocation. At first, suppliers are evaluated according to both qualitative and quantitative criteria resulting from SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats) analysis. SWOT is a useful technique in strategic management and is utilized to determine criteria and to deal with suppliers' situation in competitive market. Defining the criteria, Shannon entropy is then used to calculate weight of criteria. Then the results are used as an input for integer linear programming (ILP) to allocate order to suppliers. To our knowledge, none of the researchers have integrated Shannon Entropy and SWOT to supplier selection problem. This helps managers to understand the position of suppliers in a competitive environment with a glance at SWOT matrix.

Forest owner cooperations (FOC) are bundling wood supply from small-scale forests and some also offer additional services, such as wood harvesting or planting. FOCs are growing throughout Europe in terms of the managed timber volume. The increasing timber demand of forest-based industries as well as the new, rapidly growing demand for energy plants could lead to an under-supply in the following years in Europe. Because of high harvesting arrears in small-scale forests, FOCs are seen as an opportunity to overcome this foreseen timber shortage. The paper maps out timber mobilisation strategies using the SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats) approach.

The present investigation is a case study of Lucknow, the main metropolis in Northern India, which succumbs to a major problem of municipal solid waste and its management. A qualitative investigation using strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats analysis (SWOT) has been successfully implemented through this community participation study. This qualitative investigation emphasizes the limited capabilities of the municipal corporation's resources to provide proper facilitation of the municipal solid waste management (MSWM) services without community participation in Lucknow city. The SWOT analysis was performed to formulate strategic action plans for MSWM in order to mobilize and utilize the community resources on the one hand and municipal corporation's resources on the other. It has allowed the introduction of a participatory approach for better collaboration between the community and municipal corporation in Lucknow (India). With this stakeholder-based SWOT analysis, efforts were made to explore the ways and means of converting the possible "threats" into "opportunities" and changing the "weaknesses" into "strengths" regarding a community-based MSWM programme. By this investigation, concrete strategic action plans were developed for both the community and municipal corporation to improve MSWM in Lucknow.
