The Effect of Corrective Feedback on
Accuracy in ESL Students’ Writing
Abstract—Drawing students’ attention towards their
grammatical erro rs in writing thro ugh corrective feedback
has long been of considerable interest in second language
writing. Accuracy is an important feature of writing which is
highly valued and required by academic writers and
academic audience as well. ESL (English as a Second
Language) student write rs sometimes have challenges in
pro ducing grammatically correct texts which is one of e
essential basics of writing specifically at university level. This
paper repo rts the results o f a study on the writings o 47
first-year and second-year undergraduate students pursuing
their studies in a university in Malaysia. The study aimed to
find out whether the provision o f different types of co rrective
feedback impro ved students’ accuracy in the use of subjectverb-
agreement which was found to be a common
grammatical mistake in the students’ writing. The
participants were divided into three groups and each group
received a different type of co rrective feedback in a pretesttreatment-
posttest design. The findings demonstrated that
each individual participant in this study improved acc y
in the use of subject-verb-agreement as the result of
receiving corrective feedback. The study confirmed the
significant efficacy of corrective feedback in improve ent of
accuracy in second language writing and provided beneficial
pedagogical implications to be applied in English writ
classes.
