An Approach to Assessing Stress in eLearning Students

Abstract

On-line collaboration is becoming more and more common in education and with organisations. Many institutions encourage the use of eLearning platforms, as a complementary tool to support learning or, as in many cases, as the primary tool to do it (possibly the only one). It is believed that the sole use of such a platform can in itself be a cause of stress for students. Stress is a normal part of studying, but if not managed it the proper way, stress can grow, become a problem and greatly influence learning success. This is particularly true when in an eLearning environment, where students typically may work alone, thus more susceptible to stress. Stress detection in an eLearning environment thus becomes a crucial factor to success, with eLearning students. Estimating, in a non-invasive way, the students’ levels of stress, and taking measures to deal with it, is then the goal of this paper. We do not consider the use of dedicated sensors (invasive) such as special gloves or wrist bracelets because we intend not to be dependent on specific hardware an also we believe that such specific hardware can induce for itself some level of stress. Our work focuses on the developing of a new module to incorporate in Moodle eLearning platform, to accommodate stress detection in eLearning students.

Databases of spontaneous multimodal expressions of affective states occurring during a task are few. This paper presents a protocol for eliciting stress in a public speaking task. Behaviors of 19 participants were recorded via a multimodal setup including speech, video of the facial expressions and body movements, balance via a force plate, and physiological measures. Questionnaires were used to assert emotional states, personality profiles and relevant coping behaviors to study how participants cope with stressful situations. Several subjective and objective performances were also evaluated. Results show a significant impact of the overall task and conditions on the participants' emotional activation. The possible future use of this new multimodal emotional corpus is described.

Nowadays, technological advances pose new frontiers to society. Artificial Intelligence (AI) has become one of the main research areas of interest due to its enormous possibilities. AI applications are spreading all over various fields, human-computer interaction is no exception. Since the turn of the millennium, the human-machine communication paradigm is shifting to a more efficient way where peripherals such as remote controls, mice or keyboards do not play the center role anymore. Machines are now expected to exhibit a human like behavior, in the sense of detecting, feeling or perceiving human actions, and reacting suitably. Non-intrusive sensing of stress, attention, burnout and emotions for instance, have become possible during human-machine interaction, using AI. In this context, areas such of sensors, images and audio processing and recognition, to name just a few, have been significantly developed. Emotion is an essential part of what means to be human, but it is still disregarded by most technical fields as something not to be considered in scientific or engineering projects. However, the understanding of emotion as an aspect of decision-making processes and of modelling of human behavior is essential to create a better connection between humans and their tools and machines. As voice remains the principal mean of communication of men and is also becoming a usual way of human-machine interaction, detecting emotions throughout speech becomes a powerful toll. In this work, an overview of such issues is done, and a framework to detect emotions throughout speech analysis is presented.

World population is shifting near cities to get closer to amenities, to obtain improved working conditions or just because they enjoy the nearness of a huge availability of services that cities offer. In recent times, there has been an exponential growth on this tendency. This tension that residents force into cities, needs an improved administration of public organizations and services. Adding to that the extensively available technology, predominantly the huge evolution of mobile device users, the need and the opportunity for new digital services and platforms arises. Turning a city into a so-called “smart city” is the new approach to mitigate problems generated by the urban population growth and rapid urbanization. Newer and better ways of achieving the envisioned goals are being developed and experienced. Gamification is one of such examples; where communication between organizations and people’s is invigorated through the offering of incentives and rewards that maximize involvement with that particular institution. Knowing citizens well fair and global satisfaction towards the actions in course is crucial, as well as citizens emotions. Emotion characterizes us as human, but it is not regarded as something that needs to be considered in scientific or engineering projects yet. Nevertheless, understanding emotion as an aspect of decision-making processes and modelling of human behavior is essential to generate a better connection between humans and their tools, machines and possibly communities. Measuring emotion is not easy; we will try to do it with non-intrusive methods. Among those are measuring reactions and inputs to stimuli, together with the development of a tool that tries to measures emotional changes triggered by visual output created by the tool itself. Therefore, a framework for gamification in smart cities is proposed in this work, and a digital solution in the form of a mobile application, with has the purpose to improve city hall public services and people’s communication, bringing them closer together. This solution also tries to detect user’s emotions, based on previous work done. With this work we aim to engage citizens with their city, using gamification strategies. On parallel and without user’s awareness, we aim to try to detect emotion as a way to infer citizens well fair regarding their city.

With this work we focus on the measurement of emotion of users through the use of non-intrusive methods, like measuring inputs and reactions to stimuli, along with the creation of a tool that measures the emotional changes caused by visual output created by the tool itself. Usage of the tool in a test environment and the subsequent analysis of the data obtained will allow for conclusions about the effectiveness of the method, and if it is possible to apply it to future studies on human emotions by investigators in the fields of psychology and computation.
