established in 1992 specialized in asphalt
industries, modern construction chemicals and
mining.
• The company's mineral extraction
department was connected to the company
after it was disassociated from the Iraqi
Geological Survey, which contributed to the
enhancement of the company's mineral
identity.
•The General Company for Mining Industries
and That Al-Sawary Company for Chemical
Industries were merged into one company
under the name of State Company for Mining
Industries And append to the Ibn Sina factory
after disconnection from the Military
Industries Company.

of projects for the rehabilitation, development
and expansion of the mining industry aimed to
optimizing the exploitation of mineral ores in Iraq.
•Below are the projects that the company has
planned to implement, some of which are under
construction now and the other are being
implemented over the next five years:
Scientific and Human
Resources
Silicon
Industry
•The company was concerned with high purity
silica sand, of the Iraqi Geological Survey efforts
resulted that large quantities of high silica sand
of 10 million tons ready for investment with large
quantities of reserves for this sands, which is
considered as an endless tree of independent
industries, One of the industries is photovoltaic
cells, which is one of the alternative sources of
energy that the countries of the world started
producing.
Silicon and
Ferrosilicon Projects
•High-purity silica sand is found in the
western desert of Iraq, in the area of
Arduma, located in Anbar governorate for
the extraction of silica sand, located 15 km
west of the town of Rutba.
Silicon and
Ferrosilicon Projects
•The research conducted in the company
to prepare the silicon metal and ferrolicon
alloy from Iraqi silica sand, indicates
technical and economic indicators to
encourage the establishment of projects to
produce these two products to meet the
domestic needs and export surplus and
hope that the company be the industrial
base on the silicon industry in the country.
Silicon and
Ferrosilicon Projects
•The interest of the Ministry of Industry &
Minerals in the new and renewable energies in
Iraq coincides with the international attention
and direction of this kind of clean energies to
achieve sustainable development. Our region is
witnessing the establishment of projects for the
production of crystalline silicon but it does not
meet the global demand for crystalline silicon
which falls within the metals of the international
stock exchange.
Crystalline Silicon for
PV Project
•The project aims to exploiting the high-purity Iraqi
sand to build a giant plant using modern technology,
which is monopolized by a few international
companies. For the purpose of ensuring balance in
global markets in terms of production and marketing,
international companies are being developed for the
purpose of establishing the Iraqi crystalline silicon
production project from high purity silica sand for use
in the production of solar cells with a capacity of 1
Giga Watt power and optic fibers.
Crystalline Silicon for
PV Project
•- Iraq's proximity to world markets.
•- High value added with the less return on
investment
•- High purity of silica sand up to 99% minimum.
•- The possibility of beneficiate of silica sand to more
than 99% by using simple physical methods.
•- Prices of raw materials in the industry.
Value Added Factors
Crystalline Silicon for
PV Project
•- The global trend of energy production with new and
renewable sources.
•- International seminars and conferences on finding
alternatives for oil fuel.
•- International attention to silicon metal for its unique
properties of metal to produce clean energy i
•- The global demand on silicon metal with raising in this
demand.
•-
Global Economy Factors
Crystalline Silicon for PV
Project
•Reducing reliance on petroleum fuels for power
generation and directing new directions
•Control the specifications of the silicon metal
product locally compared with imported silicon.
•The development of new industries benefiting from
the products of the final and byproducts of Iraqi
project.
Expected Gained factors
Crystalline Silicon for PV
Project
•Cheap electricity prices from renewable energy
systems because silicon price, represents half
the price of the solar cell
•Creating employment opportunities for the labor
force in the country.
•Exploitation of empty land near cities to install
solar cells that feed every city.
•Developing educational curricula in the country
from the initial stages to university education
Crystalline Silicon for PV
Project
•The producing method of crystalline silicon is to
extract the metallurgical silicon from the high
purity Iraqi sand and then purify this silicon by
treating it with hydrochloric acid and then
depositing silicon in a well designed special
reactor to produce polycrystalline silicon.
Monocrystalline silicon can also be produced.
•Both types are used in solar cells and the latter
in the production of electronics
Crystalline Silicon for PV
Project
•Silicon compounds can be produced from
metallurgical silicon
•Optic fiber can be produced from the
reaction of the silicon tetrachloride formed
during the production process which is
pumped with the other chemical
compounds to the production reactor and
then drawing mechanically the resulting
material according to the type of optic fiber
•Master alloy represent key alloy in iron and steel
industry
•The project aims to produce ferrosilicon alloy at
production capacity of 25,000 tons per year to meet the
needs of the iron and steel industry in Iraq and open
ways for export.
•The project is one of the projects of the silicon industry
to exploit the high purity Iraqi sands, locally available
both coal and iron ore from the Husainiyat iron mine.
Ferrosilicon Project
•The ferrosilicon alloy is produced by using the
same type of three-phase electric arc furnaces to
produce metallurgical silicon metal, which is
used as a precursor for the production of
crystalline silicon.
•The raw materials are high purity silica sand,
mixed carbonaceous material for reducing
oxides and iron bearing material such as iron ore
Ferrosilicon Project
•Produce both carbon steel, stainless steel and other
ferrous alloys as silicon repels oxygen as well as to
ensure stability of carbon in molten steel.
•Producing ferroalloys such as magnesium ferrosilicon
and others.
•Silicon production from alloy.
•Magnesium production from dolomite by pidgeon
process.
40
Uses of ferrosilicon alloy
Ferrosilicon Project
