The fruit has anti carcinogenic properties by blocking, reversing, or delaying carcinogenesis before the
development of invasive disease by targeting key molecular derangements using pharmacological or nutritional agents.
(Aggarwa et. al., 2009)
The tree fruits once in a year and the berries are sweetish sour to taste. The ripe fruits are used for health drinks,
making preserves, squashes, jellies and wine (Warrier et. al., 1996). The juice of the ripe fruit, or a decoction of the fruit, or
jambolan vinegar, may be administered in India in cases of enlargement of the spleen, chronic diarrhea and urine retention.
Jambolan juice and mango juice, half and half, quench thirst in diabetics. Water-diluted juice is used as a gargle for sore
throat and as a lotion for ringworm of the scalp (Gordon and Jungfer, 2011).
HOW TO CONSUME AND WHEN TO CONSUME
We can eat jamun at any time day or night, but not in the empty stomach, it should be always taken after meals
(4-5 jammed after every meal).
In a day 10-15 jamuns can be consumed by any individual, 3-6 grams of jamun seed powder dose per day and
20-30 ml of juice is beneficial and even pregnant women’s can consume jamun.
Along with the fruit its leaves, seeds and bark can also be used for controlling blood sugar, gastric disorders like
indigestion and diarrhea.
Applying a mixture of its seed with milk on the skin reduces acne drastically.
Powder of its seeds when taken with yoghurt helps in breaking down kidney stones.
Patients undergoing surgery must avoid eating jamun as it might lead to low blood glucose levels.
Consumption of milk should be avoided one hour before and after eating the fruit.

Jamun (Syzygium cumini L.) is a wild fruit with major importance due to its antioxidant activity, anthocyanins content and exotic taste besides high medicinal value. This fruit is known for its antidiabetic properties as its seeds contain glucoside “Jamboline”. Due to its perishable nature and neutraceutical importance present studies have been conducted for the preparation of syrup. Various TSS (65 and 70 °B) and juice (25, 30, 35 and 40%) ratios have been attempted to optimize proper syrup combination. The two packaging materials i.e. glass and PET (Polyethylene terephthalate) bottles were used to pack jamun syrup prepared by the best selected combination and stored for 6 months under ambient (18-22°C) and refrigerated temperature conditions (4–7°C). Based on organoleptic and some physico chemical characteristics, syrup prepared with 35% jamun juice, 65°B TSS and 1.50% acid was considered best among 8 different treatment combinations of juice and TSS. Jamun syrup could be stored safely for a duration of six months under both the ambient and refrigerated conditions without much difference in various quality parameters. Nevertheless, both PET and glass bottles have been considered appropriate as packaging material, with reasonably fewer changes taking place in glass bottles kept in refrigerated conditions.

Despite the fact cancer is primarily a preventable disease, recent statistics indicate cancer will become the number one killer worldwide in 2010. Since certain cancers are more prevalent in the people of some countries than others, suggests the role of lifestyle. For instance cancer incidence among people from the Indian subcontinent, where most spices are consumed, is much lower than that in the Western World. Spices have been consumed for centuries for a variety of purposes-as flavoring agents, colorants, and preservatives. However, there is increasing evidence for the importance of plant-based foods in regular diet to lowering the risk of most chronic diseases, so spices are now emerging as more than just flavor aids, but as agents that can not only prevent but may even treat disease. In this article, we discuss the role of 41 common dietary spices with over 182 spice-derived nutraceuticals for their effects against different stages of tumorigenesis. Besides suppressing inflammatory pathways, spice-derived nutraceuticals can suppress survival, proliferation, invasion, and angiogenesis of tumor cells. We discuss how spice-derived nutraceuticals mediate such diverse effects and what their molecular targets are. Overall our review suggests "adding spice to your life" may serve as a healthy and delicious way to ward off cancer and other chronic diseases.

The Amazon region comprises a plethora of fruit-bearing species of which a large number are still agriculturally unimportant. Because fruit consumption has been attributed to an enhanced physical well-being, interest in the knowledge of the chemical composition of underexplored exotic fruits has increased during recent years. This paper provides a comprehensive identification of the polyphenolic constituents of four underutilized fruits from the Amazon region by HPLC/DAD-ESI-MS(n). Araçá ( Psidium guineense ), jambolão ( Syzygium cumini ), muruci ( Byrsonima crassifolia ), and cutite ( Pouteria macrophylla ) turned out to be primarily good sources of hydrolyzable tannins and/or flavonols. Additionally, different flavanonols and proanthocyanidins were identified in some fruits. The antioxidant capacity was determined by using the total oxidant scavenging capacity (TOSC) assay. Cutite showed the highest antioxidant capacity followed by jambolão, araçá, and muruci.
