The Perception of Russian Popular Literature in Literary and Cultural Studies

Since the 1990s, popular literature in Russia has found new acceptance and has become an object of research. In some of these studies, the positive assessment of new Russian detective novels as being emancipatory (from a feminist or an educational point of view or as providing a differentiated perspective on ethical values) comes as a surprise. Madame Blavatsky and the Theosophists

I have mentioned the works and influence of Sir Edward-Bulwer Lytton. Lévi visited him twice, revered him throughout his ‘magical’ phase and is said to have belonged to a ‘Miracle Club’ with him.1 The English writer’s vogue with occult-minded thinkers of the latter two thirds of the nineteenth century extended to Wagner, whose first successful opera was an adaptation of one of his novels; also to ... [Show full abstract] MacGregor Mathers, leader of the Golden Dawn, who apparently regarded himself as an incarnation of Lytton’s Byronic ‘magus’ Zanoni.2 Further afield, it extended to the great female occultist of the period, creator of the Golden Dawn’s immediate predecessor and rival among cults, Madame Helena Petrovna Blavatsky (née Hahn) of the Theosophical Society. On leaving her father’s home for St Petersburg at the outset of her career, this peripatetic adventuress had a literary (or at least journalistic) success in condensing the English novelist’s Godolphin for a contemporary Russian Readers’ Digest.3 On the strength of this, the magazine’s editor suggested that young Helena try her hand at a novel, and she set to work on something she planned to call The Ideal. There is no evidence that the work was ever completed; still, the experience may have been formative. Having made her first break-out to freedom by means of writing — and a type of writing which mixed the Lyttonesque occult (Godolphin has an astrological episode at the centre of it) with her own characteristic spiritual exaltation — HPB (the designation she would prefer in later life) found her niche, after a career of fraud and illusion, in presenting the world with a new ‘religion’ via literature of a kind: Isis Unveiled and The Secret Doctrine.
