Abstract and Figures

Curiosity is often portrayed as a desirable feature of human faculty. For example, a meta-analysis revealed that curiosity predicts academic performance above and beyond intelligence, corroborating findings that curiosity supported long-term consolidation of learning. However, curiosity may come at a cost of strong seductive power that sometimes puts people in a harmful situation. Here, with a set of three behavioural and two neuroimaging experiments including novel stimuli that strongly trigger curiosity (i.e. magic tricks), we examined the psychological and neural mechanisms underlying the irresistible lure of curiosity. We consistently demonstrated that across different samples people were indeed willing to gamble to expose themselves to physical risks (i.e. electric shocks) in order to satisfy their curiosity for trivial knowledge that carries no apparent instrumental values. Also, underlying this seductive power of curiosity is its incentive salience properties, which share common neural mechanisms with extrinsic incentives (i.e. hunger for foods). In particular, the two independent fMRI experiments using different kinds of curiosity-stimulating stimuli found replicable results that acceptance (compared to rejection) of curiosity/incentive-driven gambles was accompanied with an enhanced activity in the striatum.

Introductory Paragraph 1
Curiosity is often portrayed as a desirable feature of human faculty. For example, a meta-2
analysis revealed that curiosity predicts academic performance above and beyond intelligence1, 3
corroborating findings that curiosity supported long-term consolidation of learning2,3. However, 4
curiosity may come at a cost of strong seductive power that sometimes puts people in a harmful 5
situation. Here, with a set of three behavioural and two neuroimaging experiments including 6
novel stimuli that strongly trigger curiosity (i.e. magic tricks), we examined the psychological 7
and neural mechanisms underlying the irresistible lure of curiosity. We consistently 8
demonstrated that across different samples people were indeed willing to gamble to expose 9
themselves to physical risks (i.e. electric shocks) in order to satisfy their curiosity for trivial 10

Curiosity is a fundamental part of human motivation that supports an enormous variety of 1
human intellectual behaviours, ranging from early learning in children to scientific discovery 4–6. 2
The critical importance of curiosity in human intellectual behaviour is succinctly expressed in 3
Albert Einstein’s famous quote “I have no special talent. I am only passionately curious.4
Moreover, empirical literature has revealed a number of positive outcomes associated with 5
curiosity over the life span 1,7–9. 6
However, in both historic and modern literature, the positive portrayal of curiosity is 7
often compromised by its inherent negative aspect: strong seductive power 10. In Greek 8
mythology, for example, after losing his beloved Eurydice to the underworld, Orpheus 9
convinced the gods to let him take her back to the world of the living on the condition that he 10
would not look back until they had returned. Orpheus could not help but looked back; he 11
succumbed to curiosity and lost Eurydice. This theme, which appears repeatedly in classic 12
ancient anecdotes (e.g., Pandora, Psyche, Eve), illustrates the irresistible power of curiosity, 13
which biases our decision-making despite the knowledge of consequential negative outcomes. 14
Previous literature has indicated that both animals 11–13 and humans 3,14–16 are willing to pay 15
small amounts of costs to satisfy curiosity for the knowledge about a future reward that cannot be 16
changed. For example, people are willing to sacrifice parts of future monetary reward in 17
exchange for immediate information about the outcome of a monetary lottery, even though that 18
information cannot be used to alter lottery outcomes14. However, little research has directly 19
addressed the nature of the strong lure of curiosity for non-instrumental trivial facts, which may 20
overcome even significant risks. 21
Herein, we report a set of behavioural and neuroimaging experiments, showing that i) 22
people are willing to expose themselves to physical risks (i.e. electric shocks) to satisfy their 23

curiosity for trivial, non-consequential knowledge (i.e. magic tricks, trivia), and ii) the seductive 1
power of curiosity shares the same motivational processes as extrinsic incentives (i.e. foods). 2
In the initial behavioural experiment, participants (N=17) were presented with short (8 to 3
46s; mean = 22.22s; median = 20s) video clips of magic tricks performed by professional 4
magicians (filmed specifically for this study; Supplementary videos 1-2), followed by a wheel of 5
fortune visually depicting the probability of winning (versus losing) a lottery in each trial (Fig. 6
1a). Participants were then asked to make a decision on whether they would gamble to take the 7
lottery or not. They were told that, if they accept the lottery and win, they can see the secret 8
behind the magic trick after the experiment (with a certain probability; 16.7% - 83.3%; see 9
Methods). The experiment also included food trials, in which participants were presented with 10
food pictures, and they were told that they can eat the food after the experiment if they accept the 11
lottery and win. Critically, for both trials, if participants accepted the lottery and lost, they were 12
told that they would receive electric shock after the experiment. The magnitude of electric shock 13
was calibrated and demonstrated to participants before the experiment. Electric shock was not 14
delivered during the experimental task, as pilot data indicated that expectation of electric shock 15
has more sustained effects on participants’ fear perception than receiving actual electric shock 16
multiple times. 17

Generalised linear mixed-effects modelling showed that participants were more likely to 19
reject the lottery as the presented outcome probability of receiving electric shock increases 20
[Exp( ) = 2.30 (for curiosity condition) & 2.91 (for food condition), Ps < 0.01]. This suggests 21
that electric shock worked effectively as an aversive stimulus. Importantly, curiosity ratings of 22
magic tricks and desirability ratings of food items both positively predicted the “accept” decision 23

above and beyond the outcome probability [Exp ( ) = 2.32 (for magic curiosity) & 2.94 (for food 1
desirability), Ps < 0.01]. In other words, curiosity for non-consequential knowledge (i.e. magic 2
solution), as well as incentive value of foods, can bias decision-making entailing physical risks 3
(Supplementary Fig. 1 and Supplementary Table 1; also see Fig. 1b for results integrated with 4
following fMRI experiments). 5
How does curiosity bias our risky decision-making? There are two possibilities. The first 6
possibility is that curiosity distorts the perception of probability of risks (i.e. when people are 7
curious and in a positive mood, they overestimate the probability of winning the lottery; 17). In a 8
follow-up behavioural experiment, participants (N=29) rated their subjective chance of winning 9
when presented with a lottery, after seeing a curiosity/hunger evoking stimulus (see 10
Supplementary Methods). However, curiosity rating for magic tricks [Exp ( ) = 1.03, P = 0.13] 11
or desirability rating for foods [Exp ( ) = 1.05, P = 0.17] did not predict the participant’s 12
subjective probability of winning [Bayes Factor (BF01) for Magic = 0.00524, BF01 for Food = 13
0.00658; very strongly supportive of the null hypothesis]. 14
Another possibility is that curiosity triggers incentive salience for unknown information18. 15
Expectation of reward often increases incentive salience (or “wanting”) and this likely promotes 16
irrational and risky behaviour through modulating the neurobiological processes in the reward 17
system 19–21. Similar psychological mechanisms may underlie the seductive power of curiosity. 18
Indeed, previous functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) research has revealed that the 19
state of curiosity (e.g. when participants are waiting for the answer to a trivia question) activates 20
the striatum2,3 --- a key brain area for processing incentive salience 22. To test this hypothesis, we 21
conducted a neuroimaging experiment with fMRI using a similar experimental paradigm as in 22
the initial behavioural investigation. If the seductive power of curiosity is driven by increased 23

incentive salience, the striatum will be activated when participants accept the lottery23,24. A 2 1
(stimulus type: magic tricks vs. foods) X 2 (decision: accept vs. reject) analysis of variance 2
(ANOVA) (N=31) on a priori anatomical striatum region of interest (ROI) showed that the 3
striatum was indeed activated when participants accepted the lottery in comparison to when they 4
rejected it, regardless of the stimulus type (PFWE < 0.05; Fig. 2a-c). This effect was robustly 5
observed even after controlling for the “win” probabilities (PFWE < 0.05; Supplementary Fig. 2) 6
in the ROI analysis. No significant interaction between stimulus type and decision was observed 7
within the ROI. A whole brain analysis also indicated that the striatum showed extensive 8
activation for accepted trials in comparison to rejected trials among all brain areas 9
(Supplementary Tables 2-3). 10

We also examined whether the observed striatal activation mediates the relationship 12
between curiosity/food desirability ratings and the acceptance of the lottery on a trial-by-trial 13
basis. A multilevel mediation analysis showed that this mediation effect is statistically significant 14
(Pmediation < 0.05; Fig. 2d), further supporting the idea that the curiosity or desire for food induced 15
by the stimuli prompted people to risk of physical pain by recruiting a common brain network. 16
To further explore the mechanisms underlying curiosity-driven decision that overcomes 17
potential physical risks, we conducted a beta-series correlation functional connectivity analysis 18
using the striatum as the seed [a spherical ROI with a 6 mm-radius was created around the peak 19
voxel of the striatum shown to be activated for the accept (vs. reject) decision in the main fMRI 20
analysis]. This exploratory analysis found weaker connectivity between the left sensorimotor 21
cortex and left striatum, suggesting a decoupling effect (i.e. weaker functional correlation) 22
associated with accepting the lottery (Fig. 3, Supplementary Table 4); however statistical 23

analysis only revealed marginal significance (PFWE = 0.056) after cluster-level familywise error 1
correction. The sensorimotor cortex has been implicated in anticipation of aversive signals 2
including pain25,26. Our results may suggest that, when the participant’s curiosity to see the secret 3
of a magic trick overcame the risk of receiving electric shock, there tended to be a dissociation of 4
incentive salience and expected fear of physical shock in the brain. 5

Magic tricks evoke people’s curiosity through sensory (i.e. visual) input. This type of 7
curiosity can be described as “perceptual curiosity27. To examine the robustness of our findings 8
and investigate whether they can be generalised to the type of curiosity that is evoked by 9
conceptual ambiguities or uncertainties (called “epistemic curiosity” 27), we conducted a 10
replication fMRI experiment, in which we presented trivia questions (e.g., “What is the only food 11
that never spoils?”) selected from a standardised database 28 (instead of magic tricks) to stimulate 12
curiosity within an independent sample. A 2 (stimulus type: trivia questions vs. foods) X 2 13
(decision: accept vs. reject) ANOVA (N=30) was performed to compare the average beta 14
contrast values within the striatum ROI, created based on the activation map in the first fMRI 15
experiment. In the replication fMRI experiment, striatum was again more activated, regardless of 16
the stimulus type, when participants accepted the lottery to satisfy their curiosity in comparison 17
to when they rejected it (P < 0.05, see Supplementary Fig. 3a). Moreover, the mediation effect 18
was observed (P < 0.05, Supplementary Fig. 3b), and the sensorimotor cortex (based on a 19
functional mask created from the connectivity analysis in the first fMRI experiment) also 20
exhibited functional decoupling with striatal activation (P < 0.05, Supplementary Fig. 4). Finally, 21
to explore other brain areas that are associated with a participant’s decision-making process, a 22
whole-brain conjunction analysis was performed to examine the overlapping brain areas between 23

the two fMRI samples for the “accept” (vs. “reject”) decision. In additional to the caudate 1
nucleus, the dorsal medial prefrontal cortex, premotor cortex and thalamus (P < 0.00001, uncor; 2
Fig. 4 & Supplementary Table 2) all exhibited involvement in the decision-making process. 3

Incentive salience is a motivational “hot” feeling, potentially prompting people toward 5
impulsive behaviours29. The effect of incentive salience would be stronger when people make 6
immediate decisions involving personal dilemmas in contrast to when they make predictions 7
about the behaviours of others with whom they are emotionally detached30. To test this 8
possibility, we conducted another experiment in which participants made a prediction about the 9
decision of some hypothetical participants who were depicted to be the subjects to receive actual 10
experimental treatments. In this “prediction” experiment (N = 67), ratings of curiosity and food 11
desirability were still positively associated with the (predicted) decision to accept lottery, but the 12
effect of ratings was smaller when compared with the other experiments requiring actual 13
decision-making (P<0.05, for the interaction between Prediction and Rating; see Methods and 14
Supplementary Table 6). These results provide another compelling evidence for the role of 15
incentive salience in curiosity-driven risky decision. 16
The current study showed that curiosity biases our decision-making by recruiting the 17
same incentive motivation process as extrinsic rewards (e.g. foods). These findings suggest that 18
the seemingly irrational curiosity-based choices that people make can be explained by standard 19
decision-making models, by assuming that knowledge acquisition has inherent (yet rather 20
immediate) rewarding value per se 6,31. A question remains regarding why incentive salience 21
triggered by curiosity is so strong that it drives people into even self-harming behaviour 32–35. 22
Also, previous studies have indicated that curiosity is inherently related to the feeling of anxiety 23

and fear10, but our neuroimaging studies did not find clear pattern of activations in the 1
anxiety/fear related areas36,37. A cooperative effort from multiple perspectives such as 2
development6, personality38, computation39, and evolution40, would be required to 3
comprehensively understand the elusive concept of curiosity. 4

Methods 1
Participants 2
The study was approved by the research ethics committees of the University of Reading, UK 3
(ethics approval number: UREC 16/36). Apart from the follow-up ‘prediction’ experiment, 4
participants were recruited via mailing lists and SONA, a research participation scheme, at the 5
University. Participants provided informed consent, completed and passed a health and safety 6
screening for receiving electric stimulation to confirm that i) they did not have a cardiac 7
pacemaker (or any other devices that can be affected by electric stimulation); ii) they were free 8
from neurophysiological symptoms or conditions including peripheral vascular disease, 9
vasculitis cryoglobulinemia, lupus, tingling or numbness in hands and/or feet. To maximise 10
participants’ motivation for food consumption during the experiment, they were required not to 11
eat or drink anything (apart from water) within 2 hours prior to the testing session. 12

Depending on personal preference, participants were compensated either with course credits at a 14
fixed rate of 1 unit per hour or cash payments for their participation. For behavioural 15
experiments, a fixed rate of £7 per hour was given, while for fMRI experiments the 16
compensation for participation was fixed at £10 per hour. In addition, participants were informed 17
that they may receive extra rewards according to their task performance in the experiment. Each 18
participant took part in only one version of the experiment. 19

fMRI experiment 1 (Curiosity about Magic Tricks): Thirty-two healthy individuals were 1
recruited. One participant accepted every single gamble (100% acceptance on all trials) in the 2
decision-making task and was thus excluded prior to data analysis. The remaining 31 participants 3
(5 males) were on average 19.53 years old (sd= ±1.59) and all right-handed. 4

fMRI experiment 2 (Curiosity about Trivia): Thirty-two healthy adults took part in the 6
experiment. One of them accepted every single gamble (100% acceptance on all trials). Another 7
participant had pronounced head movements during MRI scan (> 3mm displacement in a motion 8
direction, see Supplementary Methods for further details). Both were excluded prior to data 9
analysis. A sample of the remaining 30 individuals (6 males) had a mean age of 20.3 years old 10
(sd= ±2.49) and all were right-handed. 11

Follow-up behavioural experiment on estimating the subjective outcome probability (FU1): 13
Twenty-nine healthy participants (7 males) with a mean age of 20.17 years old (sd=±3.96) 14
participated in this experiment. 15

Follow-up ‘prediction’ experiment (FU2): Sixty-nine individuals were recruited via Prolific 17
Academic (www.prolific.ac; a crowdsourcing platform for research participation) to complete 18
the experiment online and were paid at a fixed rate of £5.2 per hour. Two participants reported 19
that they had taken part in a similar experiment before and were thus excluded prior to data 20
analysis. The remaining 67 participants (42 males) were 27 years old (sd=±5.00) on average. 21

Materials 1
Food Images: All pictures were colour photographs selected from different sources on the 2
Internet. They had a resolution of at least 512 X 384 pixels and were edited so that the single 3
food item was presented in the centre against a white background using GNU Image 4
Manipulation Program (GIMP) 2, a free open-source graphics editor. A selection of food was 5
chosen based on the following criteria: first, the items would be familiar to participants to avoid 6
hesitation due to uncertainty during decision-making; second, there was a wide variety of items 7
including fruits/vegetables, sweets, snacks and savoury bites (e.g. grapes, salad, chocolate, nuts, 8
sausage roll, etc.), which might accommodate different individual preferences and tastes for food 9
and elicit different levels of desirability in participants. 10

Magic trick videos: Magic tricks, performed by three professional magicians including a 12
champion of an international magic competition, were recorded in a TV studio with a 13
professional cameraman using high resolution video cameras. All videos were then edited using 14
Adobe® Premiere Pro CC® (2015) software to a similar monotonic (dark) background, size (720 15
x 404 pixels) and viewing focus. The videos were muted (and subtitles were added in a few 16
videos, when needed). The face of the magician was hidden to avoid potential distraction due to 17
appearance and any facial expressions (see Supplementary videos 1-2). Out of the pool of 166 18
video clips, we selected magic tricks to be used in the current study by ensuring that they (1) 19
include a range of different features (such as the use of cards, sleight of hands, optical illusions) 20
and (2) likely elicit curiosity to different extents (curiosity ratings were obtained in a different 21
pilot study). The initial behavioural experiment included 45 food items and 45 magic trick 22
videos. These videos ranged between 8 – 46 seconds long (mean=22.22; median=20). Due to the 23

precious scanning time allowed, the first fMRI experiment (fMRI experiment 1) used only a 1
subset of 36 food items and 36 magic tricks from the initial experiment (length of the videos: 2
range= 8-46 sec; mean=20.61; median=18.5). Then, the two follow-up experiments (FU1 & 3
FU2) made use of the same set of stimuli as fMRI experiment 1. 4

Trivia questions: Sixty trivia questions were selected from a publicly-available 244-item 6
database, created by our research group 28 (http://koumurayama.com/resources.php). The 7
selected questions were not obviously culture or age specific. Also, for all questions, the answers 8
were likely to be unknown to the majority of participants. The selection of items corresponded to 9
different trivia categories that might elicit curiosity among individuals to different extents, 10
including art/music, history/geography, movies/TV, nature/animals, science, space, sports, food, 11
as well as other miscellaneous facts. To ensure within-person variability in curiosity evoked 12
across the experiment, half of the chosen questions were picked among those with high mean 13
curiosity scores in the database and the other half among those with low mean scores (rated by a 14
sample of 1498 respondents from a separate online study; for more information, refer to 28). The 15
second fMRI experiment (fMRI experiment 2) used 60 trivia questions, as well as 60 food items. 16
On average, the chosen questions contained 10 (ranging between 6-16) words. 17

Procedure 19
Curiosity-driven Decision-Making Task 20
The main task of the study followed similar procedures (although there were slight modifications 21
for the two fMRI and the two follow-up experiments, which are detailed in Supplementary 22
Methods). In brief, each trial started with a central fixation cross and then a brief letter cue (‘M’ 23

signified ‘magic trick’; ‘F’ signified ‘food’) to prepare participants for the kind of stimulus they 1
were about to see. This was followed by the stimulus (either a video of a magic trick in the 2
curiosity condition or an image of a food item). Participants then gave a rating to indicate their 3
level of curiosity about the magic trick or level of desirability of the food, on a 7-point scale 4
(1=not at all, 7=very much). In the curiosity trials, they also had to report how confident they 5
were to know about the solution to a magic trick, using also a 7-point scale (1=not at all, 7=very 6
much). (However, because rated confidence was not associated with a participant’s decision and 7
the inclusion of this measure did not change any main results, to make straightforward 8
comparisons between curiosity and food trials, it was not included in the reported analysis here.) 9
After rating the stimulus, participants were then presented with a wheel of fortune (WoF) 10
representing a lottery which visualised their probability of winning/losing in that trial, and were 11
asked to decide whether to gamble or not. Participants were instructed that if they accepted the 12
lottery and won, they would receive a token that might allow them to see the secret behind the 13
magic trick after the experiment. If they gambled and lost, they would get a token that might 14
increase the amount of shock they were to experience at the end of the experiment. Participants 15
could also opt to reject the lottery. At the end of each trial, the outcome of the lottery was 16
presented. Participants were informed that, as a general rule, the more ‘win’ tokens they 17
collected, the more likely they would get more rewards. Similarly, the more ‘loss’ tokens they 18
got, the more likely they would receive more electric shock. 19

There were 5 versions of WoF, each displaying a different combination of the probabilities of 21
winning and losing a gamble: i) 16.7% (1/6) win vs. 83.3% (5/6) loss; ii) 33.3% (2/6) win vs. 22

actual percentages but the relative win-to-loss contrast of probabilities was illustrated visually by 2
the relative sizes of the constituent slices on the WoF (Fig. 1a). To control for the number of 3
‘success’ and ‘loss’ experiences, unbeknownst to the participants, there was an equal chance of 4
winning or losing the lottery across all trials. 5

The curiosity and food trials were mixed and shown in a random order. The task was 7
programmed and presented using PsychoPy 41. 8

Program on the day of the testing session 10
Participants were asked not to consume any food and drinks (apart from water) within at least 2 11
hours before attending their testing session. This was confirmed with the participants at the 12
beginning of the study, including asking them to indicate when they last ate and had their last 13
meal. Following standard procedures of informed consent and completing corresponding health 14
and safety screening, participants underwent calibration for electric stimulation to identify a 15
maximum (uncomfortable yet non-painful) threshold of electric shock they can endure (see 16
Supplementary Methods for details). Then, they were told about the decision-making task. There 17
was a practice task that used a different set of stimuli (3 curiosity, 3 food) prior to the main task. 18

At the end of the experiment, participants filled out a post-experiment questionnaire that asked 20
the extent to which they expected to receive electric shock. In this questionnaire, the majority of 21
participants across the two fMRI and the follow-up behavioural (i.e. FU1) experiments reported 22
prospectively that during the experiment they expected to receive the electric shock - 89% of 23

them gave a rating of 3 or above out of 5 (mean=3.67, mode=4), representing their strong belief 1
that the shock would have happened (we do not have this information from the initial 2
behavioural study). After completing the questionnaire, rewards (including solutions to some 3
magic tricks and food items) were delivered. Participants did not actually receive any 4
electroshock. They were told that they were exempt from the shock as determined by a 5
probabilistic equation programmed in the task. 6

Functional images were acquired using a T2*-weighted gradient-echo echo planar imaging (EPI) 14
pulse sequence with 37 axial slices (in-plane resolution of 3 x 3 x 3mm, interslice gap: 0.75mm), 15
interleaved from bottom to top (echo time (TE): 30 ms; repetition time (TR): 2000 ms; flip angle: 16
90˚; field of view (FOV): 1344 x 1344 mm2; in-plane matrix: 64 x 64). A high-resolution T1-17
weighted three-dimensional anatomical image was also collected, using an MPRAGE-gradient 18
sequence with 176 x 1mm slices (in-plane resolution of 1 x 1 x 1 mm; TE: 2.52 ms; TR: 2020 19
ms; Inversion Time (TI):1100 ms; FOV: 250 x 250; flip angle: 9°), enabling optimal localisation 20

fMRI analysis 6
Preprocessing and data analyses of the imaging data were performed using the SPM software 7
(www.fil.ion.ucl.ac.uk/~spm). The preprocessing procedures included spatial realignment of the 8
EPI volumes, co-registration with the structural image, segmentation, group-wise normalisation 9
using DARTEL, and smoothing (see Supplementary Methods for more details). 10

Region-of-Interest (ROI) Mask 12
Given past findings and shown in our previous works 42,43, the striatum plays an important role in 13
influencing motivation-driven behaviour. We created an anatomical mask encompassing the 14
bilateral caudates and performed ROI analyses in fMRI experiment 1, using the WFU PickAtlas 15
toolbox in SPM. The resulting anatomical mask included 832 voxels (2.5 resels). 16

To gauge the robustness and generalisability of the findings observed in fMRI experiment 1, we 18
created a functional ROI mask based on the functionally activated voxels within the bilateral 19
striatum from the ROI analysis of fMRI experiment 1 (specifically, from the main ‘decision’ 20
effect: Acceptance > Rejection; thresholded at p<0.001, uncorrected; i.e., see fig 2b). This 21
bilateral functionally defined caudate ROI, comprising 230 voxels (0.9 resels), was then used in 22
the fMRI experiment 2 analysis. In particular, we computed the average beta/contrast values 23

within this functional mask using MarsBar 44 and conducted a single statistical test to examine 1
whether the results of fMRI experiment 1 were replicated at a significance level of P < 0.05. 2

Activation predicting curiosity/incentive-driven decision-making 4
One of the aims of the current study was to test whether the participant’s decision-making was 5
influenced by curiosity (about knowledge) and food attraction in a similar manner via the 6
incentive motivation system. To this aim, the first GLM modelled brain activation depending on 7
the dichotomous decision in the lottery – whether an individual opted to accept or reject the 8
gamble. Four separate regressors were specified for the accepted and rejected trials in curiosity 9
and food categories at the onset of the decision phase of each trial (i.e. when the WoF appeared 10
and the participant had to start indicating a choice). In addition, to account for the brain 11
activation related to stimulus presentation, another 4 regressors were included to model the 12
stimulus presentation phase (for magic trick trials specifically, this was time-locked at the 13
moment of subjective surprise) of the accepted and rejected trials for the two stimulus categories 14
(results not reported). We performed a 2x2 repeated-measures ANOVA with category 15
(curiosity/food) and decision (accepted/rejected) as factors, at the decision phase. We 16
hypothesised a main effect of decision (i.e. accepted > rejected) in the caudate ROI if curiosity 17
and food influenced decision in a similar way via the incentive motivation system. We also 18
examined the interaction effects to probe any potential stimulus-specific effects on decision-19
making. A familywise error-corrected voxel-level significance threshold of P < 0.05 was used 20
within the ROI. 21

other contrasts, we used a familywise error-corrected significance threshold of P < 0.05 at the 1
cluster-level (cluster defining threshold: P < 0.001). 2

Controlling for the effect of the probability of outcome (winning/losing) probability 4
To factor out the effect of the presented probability of winning a lottery (or getting electric 5
stimulation), we created another GLM and performed a parametric modulation analysis. In this 6
GLM, the first-level design matrices included two main categorical regressors, modelling the 7
onsets of the decision phase of trials for the two types of stimuli (curiosity, food). For these two 8
regressors, a participant’s decision in the lottery (i.e. ‘accept’ choice coded as +1; ‘reject’ choice 9
coded as -1) was added as a parametric modulator (PM); the outcome probability was added as 10
another PM. Similar to the other GLM, we still included reaction time as a PM to factor out the 11
its potential confounding effect. 12

Conjunction analysis 14
To examine whether there were consistent effects in curiosity/incentive-driven decision-making 15
regardless of the stimuli used, we performed a conjunction analysis on the results of the two 16
fMRI studies (which made use of very different curiosity-inducing materials). The conjunction 17
analyses, using a masking function of SPM, began with creating and saving a functional 18
activation mask (image) resulting from a particular SPM contrast of interest (i.e. accepted > 19
rejected trials) in the first fMRI experiment, thresholded at P < 0.001 (uncorrected). This 20
activation image was then used as an inclusion mask for the same contrast in the second fMRI 21
experiment (also thresholded at P < 0.001, uncorrected), resulting in a conjunction probability of 22
P < 0.00001 for any ‘activated’ clusters within the mask. 23

Functional Connectivity Analysis 1
Functional connectivity was examined with the beta series correlation method 45 implemented in 2
BASCO toolbox 46. This method allows us to use trial-to-trial variability to characterise dynamic 3
inter-regional interactions. Our a priori ROIs for functional connectivity analyses were the 6mm-4
radius spheres centred on the peak voxels of the left (MNI coordinate: -9, 15, 3) and right (6, 15, 5
3) caudate clusters identified in the main analysis (accepted > rejected gambles) of fMRI 6
experiment 1. 7

At the first level of the analysis, a new GLM was constructed, in which BOLD response time-9
locked to the onset of the decision phase of each trial was modelled individually by a separate 10
covariate using a canonical haemodynamic response function. This resulted in different 11
parameter estimates for each trial for each participant. The onsets of stimulus presentation in 12
each trial, and the six motion parameters for each run were also included in this GLM. Next, 13
seed-based correlations were computed voxel-wise for each participant and for each of the 14
experimental conditions of interest. This procedure generated an individual correlation map 15
between each seed region’s beta series and the beta series of all other voxels in the brain 16
separately for each condition of interest, which was normalised using Fisher’s r-to-z 17
transformation. At the second level, the individual correlation maps were taken into random-18
effects t-tests to identify voxels that showed changes in functional connectivity with the ROI 19
seed (based on trial-by-trial variability in parameter estimates) across different conditions. Given 20
the exploratory nature of the analysis, in fMRI experiment 1, the analyses were thresholded at P 21
< 0.005 at the voxel-level (uncorrected) (see Supplementary Table 4 for the results). In 22
particular, a large cluster of voxels were revealed in the left sensorimotor cortex to be less 23

correlated (i.e. decoupled) with the caudate (spherical ROI) in accepted relative to rejected 1
gambles (Fig. 3). We then created a functional ROI mask based on these ‘functionally 2
decoupled’ sensorimotor cortex voxels (comprising 105 voxels) to be used in the replication 3
analysis of fMRI experiment 2. 4

The functional connectivity analysis of fMRI experiment 2 mainly aimed to evaluate whether the 6
results from fMRI experiment 1 could be replicated, using the same approach as the main GLM 7
analysis. Specifically, with the correlation (functional connectivity) maps from fMRI experiment 8
2, we computed average contrast values (parameter estimates) within the functional sensorimotor 9
cortex ROI using Marsbar toolbox, and performed a single statistical test to examine whether the 10
functional connectivity results from fMRI experiment 1 (focusing on the differences in the 11
average contrast values between ‘accept’ and ‘reject’ choices) could be replicated with the 12
significance level set at P < 0.05. For further exploratory purposes, we performed an additional 13
whole brain analysis of differences in functional connectivity between the ‘accept’ and ‘reject’ 14
decisions in fMRI experiment 2 (see Supplementary Table 5). 15

Behavioural analysis 17
Linear mixed effect modelling 18
To examine the main question of whether curiosity and food desirability influence decisions on a 19
trial-by-trial basis at the behavioural level, we performed analysis using a generalised linear 20
mixed effects model (GLMM). In the model (separately for curiosity and food conditions), a 21
participant’s decision (i.e. choice in the lottery, which was either ‘accept’ or ‘reject;) was 22
specified as the dichotomous outcome, in a logistic link function. Rating of curiosity (or 23

desirability in the food condition) (group-mean centred) and the presented probability of 1
winning/losing were entered as predictors of the decision. To account for the nested structure of 2
the data, we specified random intercepts and slopes of participants. 3

We also combined the data from the initial behavioural experiment, fMRI experiment 1 and 5
fMRI experiment 2 and applied the same GLMM to the combined dataset to synthesise the 6
results (see Supplementary Table 1). We controlled for the effect of the experiment (i.e. from 7
which experiment the data were taken from) as an extra fixed effect. This is equivalent to 8
conducting a fixed-effect meta-analysis across the experiments. Importantly, the ‘experiment9
factor was not significant, indicating no differences in participants’ performance (in terms of 10
acceptance rate) between the three experiments. 11

The follow-up behavioural experiment FU1 had a specific aim to investigate whether curiosity 13
and food desirability distort a participant’s subjective probability of winning/losing. The main 14
analysis in this experiment was based on a linear mixed effects model (LMM) (again, separately 15
for curiosity and food conditions) that included the rating of curiosity (or desirability in the food 16
condition) and the presented probability of winning/losing as predictors of subjective probability 17
of winning the lottery. Again, we specified random intercepts and slopes of participants. We 18
compared two models, one including rated curiosity (or desirability in the food condition) and 19
one without, and computed Bayes factors based on the Bayesian Information Criterion from each 20
model to evaluate to the effect of the rating. Conventional cut-offs for interpreting Bayes factors 21
are typically based on the ones suggested by Harold Jeffreys47. 22

The follow-up ‘prediction’ experiment FU2 had participants to predict what choices they thought 1
other people would make. To compare and test whether these predictions were different from 2
(i.e. underestimating) the actual decisions made by the ‘real-life’ participants, we performed a 3
GLMM incorporating data from the initial behavioural experiment, the two fMRI experiments, 4
as well as the “prediction” study FU2. In this model, there was a fixed-effect factor ‘prediction’ 5
which specified whether a response was a prediction (+1) or an actual decision (-1), a factor 6
‘rating’ which specified participants’ ratings of curiosity/desirability of food, a 2-way interaction 7
of these factors, as well as a factor ‘category’ and a factor for ‘the presented probability of lottery 8
outcome’ to control for these effects. Importantly, the prediction X rating interaction effect was 9
negative and significant – specifically, the effect of rating was smaller in the ‘prediction’ 10
experiment than in the other actual experiments, suggesting that making a prediction for others 11
underestimates the actual effect of curiosity and food desirability in overcoming fear of physical 12
risks (see Supplementary Table 6). 13

To test whether the relationship between rated curiosity/food desirability and the decision to 18
accept a lottery is mediated by the striatal activation observed in the main fMRI analysis, we 19
performed a multilevel-mediation analysis using multilevel structural equation modelling with 20
Mplus 48 (version 7). 21

to Decision, and analysed data of curiosity and food conditions altogether using trials as the unit 2
of analysis. Category of the stimulus (i.e. curiosity or food) and the presented probability of 3
winning were included as covariates in the model. Trial-by-trial average striatal activation was 4
extracted within the ROI masks, 6mm-radius spheres centred on the peak voxels of the left (MNI 5
coordinates: -9, 15, 3) and right (6, 15, 3) caudate clusters (i.e., the cluster of the largest 6
activation) identified previously in the main analysis (accepted > rejected gambles) in fMRI 7
experiment 1. Decision was treated as a binary outcome variable. 8

To account for the multilevel nature of the data, we used person-mean centring 49 before 10
parameter estimation and computed cluster robust-standard error to make statistical inference 50. 11
After estimating the model, mediation effect was tested by directly evaluating the distribution of 12
the product confidence limits for the mediation effect using the software PRODCLIN 51. We 13
claimed statistical significance at 5% if the 95% confidence interval computed by PRODCLIN 14
did not include zero. 15

... To measure different degrees of curiosity during a state of curiosity, most studies have relied on participants' self-reported subjective curiosity ratings [5,15,16,23,26,27]. Other studies have operationalized curiosity in a more objective manner by measuring willingness to wait for an answer [3,4,6] or to sacrifice rewards (e.g., water in nonhuman primate studies, limited tokens or money in humans) [3,20,71] or by giving participants a choice of which stimuli they would like to experience [48,49,89]. Curiosity plays a fundamental role for learning and memory, but the neural mechanisms that stimulate curiosity and its effect on memory are poorly understood. Accumulating evidence suggests that curiosity states are related to modulations in activity in the dopaminergic circuit and that these modulations impact memory encoding and consolidation for both targets of curiosity and incidental information encountered during curiosity states. To account for this evidence, we propose the Prediction, Appraisal, Curiosity, and Exploration (PACE) framework, which attempts to explain curiosity and memory in terms of cognitive processes, neural circuits, behavior, and subjective experience. The PACE framework generates testable predictions that can stimulate future investigation of the mechanisms underlying curiosity-related memory enhancements.

Although individuals generally avoid negative information, recent research documents that they voluntarily explore negative information to resolve uncertainty. However, it remains unclear (a) whether uncertainty facilitates exploration similarly when exploration is expected to lead to negative, neutral, or positive information, and (b) whether older adults seek negative information to reduce uncertainty like younger adults do. This study addresses the two issues across four experimental studies (N = 407). The results indicate that individuals are more likely to expose themselves to negative information when uncertainty is high. In contrast, when information was expected to be neutral or positive, the uncertainty surrounding it did not significantly alter individuals’ exploration behavior. Furthermore, we found that uncertainty increased the exploration of negative information in both older and younger adults. In addition, both younger and older adults chose to explore negative information to reduce uncertainty, even when there were positive or neutral alternatives. In contrast to the age-related similarities in these behavioral measures, older adults demonstrated reduced scores in questionnaires on sensation seeking and curiosity, relative to their counterparts who were younger. These results suggest that information uncertainty has a selective facilitation effect on exploration for negative information and that normal aging does not alter this tendency, despite age-related reductions in self-reported measures of personality traits relevant to information seeking.

Range use by free-range laying hen flocks is heterogeneous. We hypothesized that ranging behaviour may be motivated by curiosity and thwarted by fearfulness. This project aimed to increase a hen’s motivation to explore by enriching the rearing environment and identify relationships between exploration, fear and ranging. Day-old Hy-Line chicks (n = 1700) were reared in environments that provided novel items, structures for perching or an industry standard floor rearing environment. Prior to range access, fear and exploratory behaviors were assessed at 18 weeks of age (cohort 1; n = 30 hens/treatment) via novel arena and novel object tests and at 22 weeks of age (cohort 2; n = 30 hens/treatment) using an 8-arm radial maze choice paradigm adapted from previous rodent research. Hens were trained to expect success in two arms (reward) and failure in two arms (mild punishment), the remaining four arms (ambiguous arms) were not available during training. After training, all hens were retested for 8 minutes with access to the four familiar arms only, then for four minutes with access to the ambiguous arms for the first time, in addition to the success and failure arms. Latency to enter the ambiguous arms and the number of ambiguous arms entered were assessed as an indicator of a hen’s willingness to forgo reward and risk punishment to explore a novel area. At 25 weeks of age, hens were provided with range access and individual range access was monitored for three weeks. Latency to access the range and the number of days the range was accessed was not related to rearing treatment (p > 0.05) and was only weakly correlated with behavior during the novel arena, novel object and 8-arm radial maze tests (r < 0.3). However, hens reared in the novelty rearing environment were more willing to forgo reward to explore the ambiguous arms than hens reared in the control environment (p = 0.004). We did not identify strong evidence that exploration or fearfulness was related to early ranging behavior. However, we show that motivation to explore increases when hens are reared in an enriched environment.

Previous studies suggested roles for curiosity and interest in knowledge acquisition and exploration, but there has been a long-standing debate about how to define these concepts and whether they are related or different. In this paper, we address the definition issue by arguing that there is inherent difficulty in defining curiosity and interest, because both curiosity and interest are naïve concepts, which are not supposed to have a priori scientific definitions. We present a reward-learning framework of autonomous knowledge acquisition and use this framework to illustrate the importance of process account as an alternative to advance our understanding of curiosity and interest without being troubled by their definitions. The framework centers on the role of rewarding experience associated with knowledge acquisition and learning and posits that the acquisition of new knowledge strengthens the value of further information. Critically, we argue that curiosity and interest are the concepts that they subjectively construe through this knowledge-acquisition process. Finally, we discuss the implications of the reward-learning framework for education and empirical research in educational psychology.

Recent years have seen a considerable surge of research on interest-based engagement, examining how and why people are engaged in activities without relying on extrinsic rewards. However, the field of inquiry has been somewhat segregated into three different research traditions which have been developed relatively independently-research on curiosity, interest, and trait curiosity/interest. We identify "long-term development" as a critical factor that links different research traditions, and set out an integrative perspective called the reward-learning framework of knowledge acquisition. This framework takes on the basic premise of existing reward-learning models of information seeking: that knowledge acquisition serves as an inherent reward, which reinforces people's information-seeking behavior through a reward-learning process. Critically, however, the framework reveals how the knowledge-acquisition process is sustained and boosted over a long period of time in real-life settings (i.e., self-boosting effect), allowing us to integrate the different research traditions within reward-learning models. The framework also characterizes the knowledge-acquisition process with three distinct features that are not present in the reward-learning process with extrinsic rewards- (a) selectivity, (b) vulnerability, and (c) under-appreciation. Finally, we discuss implications of the proposed framework regarding the debate over the conceptualization of broad concepts, namely; curiosity, interest, and intrinsic-extrinsic rewards. In a dynamic world, accurate beliefs about the environment are vital for survival, and individuals should therefore regularly seek out new information with which to update their beliefs. This aspect of behaviour is not well captured by standard theories of decision making, and the neural mechanisms of information seeking remain unclear. One recent theory posits that valuation of information results from representation of informative stimuli within canonical neural reward-processing circuits, even if that information lacks instrumental use. We investigated this question by recording EEG from twenty-three human participants performing a non-instrumental information-seeking task. In this task, participants could pay a monetary cost to receive advance information about the likelihood of receiving reward in a lottery at the end of each trial. Behavioural results showed that participants were willing to incur considerable monetary costs to acquire early but non-instrumental information. Analysis of the event-related potential elicited by informative cues revealed that the feedback-related negativity independently encoded both an information prediction error and a reward prediction error. These findings are consistent with the hypothesis that information seeking results from processing of information within neural reward circuits, and suggests that information may represent a distinct dimension of valuation in decision making under uncertainty.

Personality neuroscience aims to find associations between brain measures and personality traits. Findings to date have been severely limited by a number of factors, including small sample size and omission of out-of-sample prediction. We capitalized on the recent availability of a large database, together with the emergence of specific criteria for best practices in neuroimaging studies of individual differences. We analyzed resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging data from 884 young healthy adults in the Human Connectome Project (HCP) database. We attempted to predict personality traits from the "Big Five", as assessed with the NEO-FFI test, using individual functional connectivity matrices. After regressing out potential confounds (such as age, sex, handedness and fluid intelligence), we used a cross-validated framework, together with test-retest replication (across two sessions of resting-state fMRI for each subject), to quantify how well the neuroimaging data could predict each of the five personality factors. We tested three different (published) denoising strategies for the fMRI data, two inter-subject alignment and brain parcellation schemes, and three different linear models for prediction. As measurement noise is known to moderate statistical relationships, we performed final prediction analyses using average connectivity across both imaging sessions (1 h of data), with the analysis pipeline that yielded the highest predictability overall. Across all results (test/retest; 3 denoising strategies; 2 alignment schemes; 3 models), Openness to experience emerged as the only reliably predicted personality factor. Using the full hour of resting-state data and the best pipeline, we could predict Openness to experience (NEOFAC_O: r=0.24, R 2 =0.024) almost as well as we could predict the score on a 24-item intelligence test (PMAT24_A_CR: r=0.26, R 2 =0.044). Other factors (Extraversion, Neuroticism, Agreeableness and Conscientiousness) yielded weaker predictions across results that were not statistically significant under permutation testing. We also derived two superordinate personality factors ("α" and "β") from a principal components analysis of the NEO-FFI factor scores, thereby reducing noise and enhancing the precision of these measures of personality. We could account for 5% of the variance in the β superordinate factor (r=0.27, R 2 =0.050), which loads highly on Openness to experience. We conclude with a discussion of the potential for predicting personality from neuroimaging data and make specific recommendations for the field.

The importance of interest for memory performance has been established in previous studies. One way to induce interest in experiments is to use trivia questions. However, previous studies have used only a limited number of trivia questions and these questions differ substantially across studies, making it difficult to ensure the comparability and generalizability of the findings. Most of these studies also have not differentiated between interest in the trivia question itself and interest in the corresponding answer. To address these issues, the current study established a normative database for 244 trivia questions with a large sample (N = 1,498) and examined how pre-answer interest (i.e., interest in the question) and post-answer interest (i.e., interest in the answer) relate to learning performance. Participants were presented with trivia questions, asked to provide their best guess for the answer, rated their confidence in the guess, and indicated their interest in learning the true answer. Following the presentation of the answer, participants indicated their post-answer interest. One week later, participants were given a memory test on the questions. A multilevel structural equation model revealed that the positive relationship between pre-answer interest and memory was mostly mediated by post-answer interest (i.e., interest in the questions’ answer). Confidence had both a direct and a mediated effect (over interest) on memory. These results provide a more fine-grained analysis of how interest can fuel learning.

This paper examined, with a behavioral paradigm, to what extent people choose to view stimuli that portray death, violence or harm. Based on briefly presented visual cues, participants made choices between highly arousing, negative images and positive or negative alternatives. The negative images displayed social scenes that involved death, violence or harm (e.g., war scene), or decontextualized, close-ups of physical harm (e.g., mutilated face) or natural threat (e.g., attacking shark). The results demonstrated that social negative images were chosen significantly more often than other negative categories. Furthermore, participants preferred social negative images over neutral images. Physical harm images and natural threat images were not preferred over neutral images, but were chosen in about thirty-five percent of the trials. These results were replicated across three different studies, including a study that presented verbal descriptions of images as pre-choice cues. Together, these results show that people deliberately subject themselves to negative images. With this, the present paper demonstrates a dynamic relationship between negative information and behavior and advances new insights into the phenomenon of morbid curiosity.

Significance The need for students trained in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) jobs is growing rapidly in the United States, yet students do not enroll in the necessary courses to prepare for STEM careers. In a randomized controlled trial, parents in the utility–value intervention group received materials detailing the importance of STEM for their adolescents in high school. The intervention increased mathematics and science ACT scores and course-taking in high school. This greater high-school STEM preparation was associated, 5 y later, with increased STEM career pursuit. These findings suggest that educational policies should promote the personal relevance of high-school mathematics and science courses and involve parents in helping to promote STEM preparation and career pursuit.

In a dynamic world, an accurate model of the environment is vital for survival, and agents ought regularly to seek out new information with which to update their world models. This aspect of behaviour is not captured well by classical theories of decision making, and the cognitive mechanisms of information seeking are poorly understood. In particular, it is not known whether information is valued only for its instrumental use, or whether humans also assign it a non-instrumental intrinsic value. To address this question, the present study assessed preference for non-instrumental information among 80 healthy participants in two experiments. Participants performed a novel information preference task in which they could choose to pay a monetary cost to receive advance information about the outcome of a monetary lottery. Importantly, acquiring information did not alter lottery outcome probabilities. We found that participants were willing to incur considerable monetary costs to acquire payoff-irrelevant information about the lottery outcome. This behaviour was well explained by a computational cognitive model in which information preference resulted from aversion to temporally prolonged uncertainty. These results strongly suggest that humans assign an intrinsic value to information in a manner inconsistent with normative accounts of decision making under uncertainty. This intrinsic value may be associated with adaptive behaviour in real-world environments by producing a bias towards exploratory and information-seeking behaviour.

Recent studies have documented that self-determined choice does indeed enhance performance. However, the precise neural mechanisms underlying this effect are not well understood. We examined the neural correlates of the facilitative effects of self-determined choice using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). Participants played a game-like task involving a stopwatch with either a stopwatch they selected (self-determined-choice condition) or one they were assigned without choice (forced-choice condition). Our results showed that self-determined choice enhanced performance on the stopwatch task, despite the fact that the choices were clearly irrelevant to task difficulty. Neuroimaging results showed that failure feedback, compared with success feedback, elicited a drop in the vmPFC activation in the forced-choice condition, but not in the self-determined-choice condition, indicating that negative reward value associated with the failure feedback vanished in the self-determined-choice condition. Moreover, the vmPFC resilience to failure in the self-determined-choice condition was significantly correlated with the increased performance. Striatal responses to failure and success feedback were not modulated by the choice condition, indicating the dissociation between the vmPFC and striatal activation pattern. These findings suggest that the vmPFC plays a unique and critical role in the facilitative effects of self-determined choice on performance.

Curiosity is a fundamental part of human motivation that supports a variety of human intellectual behaviors ranging from early learning in children to scientific discovery. However, there has been little attention paid to the role of curiosity in aging populations. By bringing together broad but sparse neuroscientific and psychological literature on curiosity and related concepts (e.g., novelty seeking in older adults), we propose that curiosity, although it declines with age, plays an important role in maintaining cognitive function, mental health, and physical health in older adults. We identify the dopaminergic reward system and the noradrenergic system as the key brain systems implicated in curiosity processing and discuss how these brain systems contribute to the relationship between curiosity and adaptive aging.

Drive and motivation are central to affective neuroscience. Here, we describe the development of conceptualizations from early behaviorist theories to contemporary theories linking motivation closely to reward. Current experimental data suggest key roles of drive and motivation in the wanting, liking, and learning processes underlying the pleasure cycle supporting survival of individuals and species. In particular, the underlying functional neuroanatomy of drive and motivation is now becoming clearer in humans and other mammals, which provides hope for novel more effective interventions for the pervasive problems of drive and motivation in affective and addictive disorders. © 2017 by Emerald Group Publishing Limited All rights of reproduction in any form reserved.
