Abstract

Neue Ideen verbreiten sich zunächst oft außerordentlich langsam, weit langsamer, als es die Entwickler und ersten Befürworter wünschen und erwarten. Nur im günstigen Fall trit nach einiger Zeit eine Beschleunigung der Verbreitungsgeschwindigkeit ein. Der Artikel stellt den Hintergrund dieses Phänomens anhand des Modells der Verbreitung von Innovationen ("Diffusion of Innovations" nach Everett Rogers) dar und wendet das Modell auf den Fall des Esperanto an.

Louis von Wunsch-Rolshoven presents in a very detailed collection of documents arranged according to topics, which false ideas about planned languages and/or Esperanto can be found with some partly prominent linguists also still in the recent past. These are partly minor misunderstandings, partly blatantly untruthful misrepresentations. The author brings to each case a correction proven in detail by sources and considers, how a mixture of wrong tradition and omission of the examination of the evidence could lead to the fact that some misunderstandings are still found today.

Views of Constructed Languages, with Special Reference to Esperanto: An Experimental Study

This paper makes brief reference to constructed languages in general and then examines Esperanto, giving particular attention to language attitudes and research. For the present study, two university groups"faculty and students"were surveyed on their knowledge of, and attitudes toward, constructed languages. The questionnaire used also requested information about respondents' language abilities and political and religious beliefs. The results indicated that the faculty group knew more about constructed languages than did the students, but were less enthusiastic about them. Faculty were thus less likely than the students to see practical benefits in the knowledge and use of constructed language, were less favorably disposed toward having such varieties taught at school, and were less interested in actually learning a constructed language. It is suggested that the faculty-student difference may result from the higher level of formal education possessed by the former group, who can be understood to be less enthusiastic because they are more aware of constructed languages, and the disadvantages and impracticalities traditionally associated with them.
