Part II provides a more detailed analysis of the status and trends of coral reef ecosystems in the 32 countries, states, and territories for which we have data. The format includes maps indicating all locations sampled, a detailed table of data sources and sites surveyed, timelines of ecologically important events, and relevant references. Each of these reports was compiled in consultation with local experts and all those who provided data and advice are listed as authors of each country report.

Interactions in the canopy among Caribbean reef octocorals

The incidence of octocoral-octocoral interactions and the physical effects of the interactions were determined in surveys of 29 branching octocoral species at 2 sites in St. John, U.S. Virgin Islands. Close proximity, defined as the bases or branches of octocorals being within 5 cm of each other, creates the potential for direct competitive interactions. [Show full abstract] and 34% of the colonies at the 2 sites), and were more abundant at the site with higher colony density and proportionately more colonies with tall, highly branched morphologies. Damaged branches associated with neighboring colonies were found in 19% of the colonies in close proximity. Eunicea flexuosa colonies exhibited less damage than the 5 most common species it interacted with (Antillogorgia americana, Eunicea mammosa, Gorgonia ventalina, Pseudoplexaura crucis, and Pseudoplexaura wagenaari). Of the colonies in close proximity, 23% featured asymmetric colony forms, representing the effects of competition through the preemption of canopy space. G. ventalina had the highest incidence of asymmetry. Nearest-neighbor analyses detected a weak but significant signal of competition in the combined sizes of neighboring colonies. Competition among octocorals in the canopy probably has limited effects on their spatial distribution, but tissue damage and altered colony form could affect growth and fitness.

Evidence for positive density-dependent effects in recovering Diadema antillarum populations

Recovering populations may experience positive density-dependent feedbacks that contribute to population increases. Diadema antillarum, a keystone herbivore on Caribbean coral reefs, suffered a well-documented mass mortality in 1983–84. We evaluated the effect of adult density on juvenile persistence of D. antillarum experimentally, and examined size-frequency distributions of recovering local populations for evidence of positively density-dependent juvenile persistence at St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands. Juvenile persistence was significantly higher in high adult density treatments, and bimodal population size distributions also suggest potential positive effects of adult density on juveniles. This positive feedback could accelerate the recovery of this important coral reef grazer.

The polychaete cryptofauna from Cozumel Island, Mexican Caribbean

The polychaete cryptofauna collected in dead coral substrates in the shelf of Cozumel Island, Mexican Caribbean is analyzed here. Samples were taken with SCUBA diving on transects perpendicular to the coastline (depths 2 to 22 m). Nineteen families, 36 genera and 42 species were found. [Show full abstract] followed by the Syllidae with 94 ind m−2 (five species) and the Amphinomidae with 73 ind m−2 (three species). Eunice cariboea, a characteristic species of coral reef areas in the Gulf of Mexico (representing here 36% of the total collected, and Syllis (Typosyllis) ortizi are the dominant species in Cozumel. There is some effect related to depth and anthropogenic influence, on the density and species richness because the lowest values were found in the shallower sampling zones (approximately 332 ind m−2 and 20 species, versus 931 ind m−2 and 32 species, in the deeper zones) and the populations' composition at each site is quite different. Compared with other areas sampled in the extensive Mexican coral reef environments in the Gulf of Mexico, in Cozumel the densities of polychaetes and species richness are high.
