Hot-carrier microwave conductivity of elemental semiconductors

The hot-carrier microwave conductivity characteristics of the elemental semiconductors are reviewed. Significant features of the microwave incremental conductivity and also of the high-field microwave conductivity are critically analysed. These features are explained from simple physical considerations. Comparison is then made between the detailed theories and the experimental results. It is ... Some of the finer details of the characteristics which require further investigations are also indicated.RésuméLes caractéristiques de la conductivité des porteurs chauds des semiconducteurs élémentaires aux micro-ondes sont revues. Les traits significatifs de la conductivité d'accroissement aux micro-ondes ainsi que la conductivité d'un champ élevé à hyperfréquence sont analysés très critiquement. Ces traits sont expliqués par des considérations physiques simples. La comparaison est ensuite faite entre les théories détaillées et les résultats expérimentaux. On démontre que la plupart des traits des caractéristiques de conductivité aux micro-ondes sont en accord avec ceux prédits par la théories. On indique aussi certains détails plus minutieux dans les caractéristiques qui exigeraient un plus long examen.ZusammenfassungDie Mikrowellenleitfähigkeiten der Elementhalbleiter werden zusammengestellt. Wichtige Merkmale der differentiellen Mikrowellenleitfähigkeit und auch die Hochfeld-Mikrowellenleitfähigkeit werden kritisch analysiert. Diese Merkmale werden aufgrund einfacher physikalischer Betrachtungen erklärt. Dann wird ein Vergleich zwischen den einzelnen Theorien und den experimentellen Ergebnissen angestellt. Es wird gezeigt, dass die meisten Merkmale der Mikrowellenleitfähigkeit mit den Erwartungen der Theorie übereinstimmen. Auf feinere Details, welche weiterer Untersuchungen bedürfen, wird hingewiesen.

Basic elements of the exact renormalization group method and recent results within this approach are reviewed. Topics covered are the derivation of equations for the effective action and relations between them, derivative expansion, solutions of fixed point equations and the calculation of the critical exponents, construction of the c-function and a description of the chiral phase transition.
