On Nuclear Magnetic Ordering Phenomena in Van Vleck Paramagnetic Materials

Magnetic interactions between nuclei of Van Vleck paramagnetic ions are greatly enhanced in the presence of magnetic exchange interactions between the ions. This leads to relatively large and easily observable nuclear magnetic susceptibilities in the temperature range below 1°K and to cooperative nuclear magnetic ordering phenomena in the millikelvin range. For exchange interactions close to the critical value (but somewhat below it) a mixed electronic—nuclear phase transition can be expected. This critical region is examined in the molecular field approximation and the results are discussed and compared with calculations by Murao.1

Multifragmentation of natAg and 197Au nuclei induced by 1.8-4.8 GeV 3He ions has been studied with the Indiana Silicon Sphere 4pi detector array. Rapidity, moving source, and sphericity-coplanarity analyses are consistent with near-simultaneous emission from a source in approximate kinetic equilibrium. Large Ca-48 anomalies are associated with Ti-50 anomalies in Murchison and Murray hibonites

Ion microprobe measurements of the Ca isotopic compositions of eight individual hibonite grains from the Ca chondrites Murray and Murchison are reported. Large Ca-48 anomalies two orders of magnitude larger than those observed in normal inclusions and at least a factor of four larger than in the FUN inclusions are found. These anomalies are qualitatively correlated with the Ti-50 anomalies in the ... [Show full abstract] sense that the delta Ca-48 and delta Ti-50 values have the same sign. These results confirm previous conclusions concerning the presence of a nucleosynthetic component produced by neutron-rich nuclear statistical equilibrium processes. They suggest the preservation of the isotopic anomalies with interstellar dust grains as carriers of the n-rich Ca and Ti components. The large variation in the delta Ca-48/delta Ti-50 ratios indicates multiple nucleosynthetic components and/or chemical fractionation between Ca and Ti prior to hibonite formation.

Determination of electronic energy levels for the heteromolecular ions HeH2+, LiH3+, and BeH4+ from...

By making use of the Hamilton-Jacobi equation, we obtain the exact value of the electronic energy levels for the heteromolecular ions HeH2+, LiH3+, and BeH4+ as a function of nuclear distance. The Hylleraas method in association with the series established by Wind-Jaffé was applied to these molecular ions. The results are in good agreement with those found in the literature.

[Show full abstract] g-factors and life-times of these 2^+1 states are used to calibrate the measured attenuated RIV distribution from Coulomb-excited radioactive-beam ^132Te 2^+1 de-excitations to yield the the g-factor of this state. The potential of different methods to measure excited state g-factors of short-lived nuclear states using RIB's will be discussed, emphasizing the ability of the RIV method to yield useful results with extremely weak beams.
