Mehrabian's communication study
Study 1
3 sets of words (positive, neutral, negative) were spoken in
3 different tones. The tone conveyed more ‘emotions behind
the speaker’ than the words.

Mehrabian's communication study
Study 2
‘Maybe’ said in 3 different tones (like, neutral, dislike)
with picture of the speaker, with 3 facial expressions. The
picture got more accurate responses than the voice, by a
ratio 3:2.

Mehrabian's communication study
Total Liking = 7% Verbal + 38% Vocal + 55% Facial Liking
Unless a communicator is talking about their feelings or
attitudes, these equations are not applicable.
Often misunderstood.

provided in a timely manner (i.e., close to the act of
learning production) (Nicol & Macfarlane, 2006, p9)

Interview
If it’s only in written and being criticised, I would be more defensive, but
this way of feedback I was able to understand and listen to it without being
defensive.
We were writing thread, and [Tutor] commented one of my posts, and which was
misunderstood completely. I thought she was offended by what I said, so I
immediately sent her an email, I was worried. But the peers were laughing at
the comment, because that was a colloquial expression, which is not negative
at all. English is not my first language, so that kind of misunderstanding did
not happen.

Interview
Now, because of the audio feedback, I know how my counselling relates to
theories. I loved that she [tutor] gave comments on the details such as
silence and body language.
Being an online student, having a human interaction, and we are doing
counselling, especially this module is counselling skills, it is vital to see
body language. It allows you to know your tutor better, and her use of
narrative (commentary), I think it was very good.

Interview
Great work, great work. It’s a module where you are talking about reflection,
human interaction, gestures. She picks up those things, and for example,
suggests that you could have picked up silence here. It’s difficult to do on
paper. This feedback gave another dimension to our learning.
