Development Practices and Ordinances as Predictors of Canopy Coverage in Florida (United States) Communities

We conducted dot-based canopy coverage of 43 Florida cities. We then used findings from a comprehensive survey of management practices and ordinances for these same cities to see if we could predict percent canopy coverage. Housing density and the presence of heritage tree protections were significant predictors of canopy coverage.

Greenwich Village and Sustainable City Principles

This chapter aims to determine the extent that the planning of the Greenwich Village neighborhood addresses Sustainable City Principles (SCPs). Three key Sustainable City Principles (SCPs) (as adopted in Chap. 2) are then introduced, including: Heritage Protection; Housing Provision: and, Open Spaces Allocation. Current development in Greenwich Village is then examined using the three SCPs as a guide The Greenwich Village neighborhood needs and issues are then examined (under the three SCPs). This examination is centered on the annual profile report completed by the Manhattan Community Board 2 (containing Greenwich Village) for the City Council. A Greenwich Village case study redevelopment project (e.g. Hudson Square) is then selected. The SCPs are addressed for this case study and conclusions drawn. Finally, an overall conclusion is drawn on the extent that the planning of Greenwich Village addresses the SCPs. With this conclusion, its noted comments are made in the final chapter (after examining all neighborhoods) on the extent neighborhood planning in New York addresses SCPs. It’s also noted that the final chapter will comment on neighborhood planning addressing SCPs in any city or urban area (also referencing futurists and planning theorists as introduced respectively in Chaps. 1 and 2).

The paper first describes Florida's comprehensive planning process, the SHIP programme and federal housing funds in more detail. It then discusses the results of a survey of local SHIP staff to determine the level of involvement of city and county planning staff in the design and implementation of the SHIP and federal housing programmes. Finally, it presents recommendations to promote the involvement of planners in decisions about local housing programmes.

Influence of trees on residential property values in Athens, Georgia (USA): a survey based on actual...

A survey of the sales of 844 single family residential properties in Athens, Georgia, U.S.A., indicated that landscaping with trees was associated with 3.5%–4.5% increase in sales prices. During the 1978–1980 study period, the average house sold for about $38 100 (in 1978 constant dollars) and had five trees in its front yard. The average sales price increase due to trees was between $1475 and ... [Show full abstract] $1750 ($2869 and $3073 in 1985 dollars) and was largely due to trees in the intermediate and large size classes, regardless of species. This increase in property value results in an estimated increase of $100 000 (1978 dollars) in the city's property tax revenues.
