City, Land, and Literature: Practices of Hong Kong Sinophone Poetry in the 2000s 城市、土地與文學:2000年代香港華語語系詩的實踐

Abstract

本文借用台灣鄉土文學理論,結合其他城市書寫理論,討論2000年代香港華語語系詩和土地相關的公共實踐。城市並非沒有「土地」的概念,只是其表現方式和鄉郊地區不一樣。本文歸納,在2000年代香港華語語系詩的實踐中,書寫與回應城市的土地的作品,美學與表現方式多元,就內容而言,則以兩種形態出現:其一是在和土地相關的大事件(如保育天星碼頭和皇后碼頭運動)時的回應;其二是深耕於城市土地,書寫街道和社區,以及其中的人與事的作品,但當「大事件」發生時,它們可以為之提供養份。透過分析2000年代香港華語語系詩的實踐,本文說明文學在新自由主義當下介入公共的可能,如何有助反思自身和城市土地的關係,豐富文學也豐富運動,以及其對反思與深化「本土」的意義。 By adopting theories of xiangtu wenxue (homeland literature), with other theories on the writing of the city, this paper focuses on the re-politicization of Hong Kong Sinophone poetry in the 2000s. In the 2000s, there are many Hong Kong Sinophone poetic works in various genres and forms related to the land in the city. In an urban context, “land” means something different from a rural context. It is not true that the city lacks the concept “land,” only the representation of which is different. This paper suggests that in the literary practices of Hong Kong Sinophone poetry in the 2000s, literary works that respond to the concept “land” in the city present themselves in various ways. In terms of the contents, these Sinophone poems are either responding to a particular event related to the land in the city (e.g. Preservation Movement of Star Ferry and Queen’s Piers) or focusing on the people and livelihoods on different streets and neighbourhoods in Hong Kong. Yet, when the “events” happen, these works rooted in the streets and neighbourhoods become useful resources for urban social movements. Through analyzing these literary practices, this paper discusses how literature engages with urban politics while reflecting on one’s relationship with the city and the land. The paper also asserts that these practices are also significant for rethinking and deepening the understanding of “localism.”

Localism has become dominant in mainstream Hong Kong identity politics after the occupation period of the Umbrella Movement. This localism demonstrates the will of Hong Kong people to reclaim their own destiny, to reject the authoritarian rule of Beijing and to reclaim unique local cultural identities as different from China, e.g. uphold universal values and cosmopolitanism. However, this localism neither shares a unified cultural imaginary and symbolic order nor a single operational logic. There are at least two major kinds of localism in Hong Kong, i.e. one whose logic is based on anti-China blaming of the immigrant (i.e. xenophobia and exclusionary politics), and one whose modus operandi is to rebuild local communities (i.e. based on progressive, participatory, democratic values of inclusion, diversity and empowerment of the weak). These two polarized localisms often coexist. The question is which one takes the lead or even becomes hegemonic in a situation or context. This article re-examines the emergence and transformation of localism in the last decade through participant observation in Hong Kong urban social movements. Instead of explaining why xenophobic localism (blaming the immigrant) becomes a dominant political power, we will take a closer look at the transformation of the progressive and recalcitrant “localism through community rebuilding movement,” or simply New Preservation Movement as the actually existing alternative.

The South Atlantic Quarterly 100.3 (2001) 803-827 Fredric Jameson's proposal that all third world texts be read as "national allegories" has been one of the more influential and important attempts to theorize the relationship of literary production to the nation and to politics. Unfortunately, its influence and importance has thus far been primarily negative. For many critics, Jameson's essay stands as an example of what not to do when studying third world literature from the vantage point of the first-world academy. His attempt in the now infamous essay, "Third-World Literature in the Era of Multinational Capitalism," to delineate "some general theory of what is often called third-world literature" has been attacked for its very desire for generality. The presumption that it is possible to produce a theory that would explain African, Asian, and Latin American literary production, the literature of China and Senegal, has been (inevitably) read as nothing more than a patronizing, theoretical orientalism, or as yet another example of a troubling appropriation of Otherness with the aim of exploring the West rather than the Other. The most well-known criticism of Jameson's essay along these lines remains Aijaz Ahmad's "Jameson's Rhetoric of Otherness and the ‘National Allegory.'" More informally and anecdotally, however, within the field of postcolonial literary and cultural studies, Jameson's essay has come to be treated as little more than a cautionary tale about the extent and depth of Eurocentrism in the Western academy, or, even more commonly, as a convenient bibliographic marker of those kinds of theories of third world literature that everyone now agrees are limiting and reductive. Looking back on Jameson's essay through the haze of fifteen years of postcolonial studies, as well as the through the equally disorienting smoke thrown up by the explosion of theories and positions on globalization, one wonders what all the fuss was about. In hindsight, it appears that almost without exception critics of Jameson's essay have willfully misread it. Of course, such misreadings are to be expected. The reception given to this or that theory has as much to do with timing as with its putative content. As one of the first responses to postcolonial literary studies from a major critic outside the field, the publication of Jameson's essay in the mid-1980s provided postcolonial critics with a flash point around which to articulate general criticisms of dominant views of North-South relations expressed within even supposedly critical political theories (like Marxism). It also provided a self-definitional opportunity for postcolonial studies: a shift away from even the lingering traces of Marxist interpretations of imperialism toward a more deconstructive one exemplified by the work of figures such as Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak and Homi Bhabha. While criticisms of Jameson's views may have thus been useful or productive in their own way, they have nevertheless tended to obscure and misconstrue a sophisticated attempt to make sense of the relationship of literature to politics in the decolonizing world. I want to argue here that Jameson's "general" theory of third world literary production offers a way of conceptualizing the relationship of literature to politics (and politics to literature) that goes beyond the most common (and commonsense) understanding of the relations between these terms. Indeed, the concept of national allegory introduces a model for a properly materialist approach to postcolonial texts and contexts, one that resonates with Kalpana Seshadri-Crooks's recent characterization of postcolonial studies as "interested above all in materialist critiques of power and how that power or ideology seems to interpellate subjects within a discourse as subordinate and without agency." Crooks's description of the aims of postcolonial studies emerges out of her analysis of the malaise or melancholia that has beset postcolonial studies as it enters the new millennium. It seems to me that revisiting Jameson's theory of third world literature—both its problems and its productive potentialities—provides a (perhaps unexpected) way out of this malaise.
