The Solana lead mine, located near Belalcázar, northern Córdoba, Spain was worked consecutively by three Scottish registered mining companies in the late 19th century. Pumping machinery was supplied by the Hathorn Davey engineering company, Leeds, England. The paper provides a background to the mine and the Scottish mining companies.

John Taylor and Sons and their three 'Drops of Comfort': A brief history of the company and their lead-mining endeavours in Southern Spain

Introduction The London based firm of mining consultants, managers and mine owners, John Taylor and Sons, is well known, certainly as far as British mining history is concerned. The mid-19th cen tury mining activities of John Taylor and Sons were initially centred on England and Wales, but their interests quickly spread to Spain, and to a lesser extent Portugal. Figure 1 shows all their Iberian mining companies and locations. Between 1852 and 1917, Taylors managed the Linares Lead Mining, Fortuna and Alamillos companies that worked the rich lead lodes at Linares, Jaén Province, Andalucía, Spain. ‘Drops of Comfort’ was how an editorial in the Mining World and Engineering Record in April 1884 [MW(i) 1884 374] described the continuing success of those Companies, which consistently provided relatively good dividends for their shareholders. Drops of Comfort The periodical meetings of the Linares, the Fortuna, and the Alamillos mines are always joyful occasions, for the shareholders have learned, from long and happy experience, to expect a dividend… Despite traversing the ups and downs of a wildly fluctuating lead market during the last half of the 19th, and early 20th centuries, the three companies consistently declared modest dividends for their shareholders. ... In this work we study the electronic transport through a quantum dots arrangement, let say an artifical molecule, coupled to metallic leads. We proposed a model that can works as an efficient spin filter for certain values of the energy , by Zeeman effect besides a quantum interference phenomenon, the Fano effect.

Determining the Real Data Completeness of a Relational Dataset

Low quality of data is a serious problem in the new era of big data, which can severely reduce the usability of data, mislead or bias the querying, analyzing and mining, and leads to huge loss. Incomplete data is common in low quality data, and it is necessary to determine the data completeness of a dataset to provide hints for follow-up operations on it. In this paper, we study how to determine real data completeness of a relational dataset. By taking advantage of given functional dependencies, we aim to determine some missing attribute values by other tuples and capture the really missing attribute cells. We propose a data completeness model, formalize the problem of determining the real data completeness of a relational dataset, and give a lower bound of the time complexity of this problem. Two optimal algorithms to determine the data completeness of a dataset for different cases are proposed. We empirically show the effectiveness and the scalability of our algorithms on both real-world data and synthetic data.
