Abstract

The article provides a theoretical and analytical insight into the framework of celebritization in sports; it mainly deals with the world of athletes with physical disabilities. The authors focus on the media image of Jiří Ježek, the most successful cyclist in the history of Paralympic Games, created by Czech public television, Česká tele-vize, and Czech private television, TV Nova. The content analyses of their main sports broadcasts (TV sports news) were the most important research item. The quantitative research (how often he has been presented by TV stations in question during the last fourteen years) was followed by the qualitative research methods (how they have presented him and his story). The authors also contacted the companies to find out why they chose him as a figure to present themselves. Using the research findings as well as other sources of information, the article presents the media image of Jiří Ježek and outlines in detail the process of celebritization of an athlete with a disability who has become really famous, a real star.

Being one of the portmanteau words related to media entertainment, "sportainment" is a term that refers to the processes of merging sports and entertainment within the media sphere, predominantly for commercial purposes. Even though the concept is mostly discussed in terms of various forms of reality TV, live broadcasting of sports or globally successful spectacular sporting events such as the Olympic Games, there are many other forms of sportainment to consider. The author reflects on sportainment and its use in the present-day American mainstream film production. The aim of the article is to offer a set of theoretical outlines which are related to sport and its social, cultural and media frameworks, as well as knowledge on sports feature films produced in Hollywood and their thematic aspects. That is why the second part of the text addresses the ways various sports and athletes are portrayed in American mainstream films. The author works with the basic assumption that the current forms and variations of so-called sports dramas made in Hollywood apply multiple practices of genre hybridisation, and they thus tend to involve a wide variety of topics, ideas and heroes which may or may not be primarily focused on sport. © 2018, University of SS. Sport is a very prominent social institution in almost every society because it combines the characteristics found in any institution with a unique appeal only duplicated by, perhaps, religion. The functional, conflict, and cultural studies perspectives are reviewed, with additional discussion on how sport relates to the processes of socialization and social change. The latter focusses on the evolution of sport from a playful, participation-oriented activity to one that resembles a corporate form guided by the principles of commercialism and entertainment. The role of sport in international relations and national development dramatizes the political meaning of sport to many societies. While sport may be integrative at the higher political levels, it has not been so at the interpersonal levels of gender and race. The inequality that characterizes society’s relations of gender and race is found in sport as well. The sociology of sport will be able to shed more light on all of these issues when theory inform...
