Abstract

Immunomodulation is an exciting research topic for treatment of cancer. Enhancing the immune response through the use of immune modulating drugs and/or loco-regional ablation can significantly influence systemic anti-cancer immune response. Enhanced anti-tumor immunity has been documented following Radiotherapy and thermal ablation. High intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) is an attractive non-ionizing, noninvasive tool that is being used for the treatment of cancer. Research studies showed favorable systemic antitumor responses after HIFU therapy. In this educational poster, the mechanism of action of HIFU ablation will be discussed as well as the main concepts of Immunomodulation following HIFU therapy. The unique immune response to HIFU versus other loco-regional treatments, like radiotherapy, will be discussed. Important preclinical studies investigating the use of HIFU induced anti-tumor response for treatment of different cancers will be reviewed.
