I
NTRODUCTION
The present paper is the fifth contribution in the series devoted to the comprehensive faunistic
study of Iranian spiders. Currently, 672 spider species of 273 genera are known from Iran (Zamani
et al. 2018). Although there are several recent publications dealing with the description of new taxa
or records of spiders new to the fauna of Iran (e.g. Mirshamsi et al. 2015; Zamani et al. 2014, 2015,
2016, 2017; Marusik & Zamani 2015b, 2016; Malek Hosseini et al. 2015; Moradmand et al. 2016;
Zamani et al. 2017; Moradmand 2017), taxonomic surveys and large-scale faunistic works are scarce
(e.g. Tanasevitch 2009; Moradmand & Jäger 2011; Marusik & Zamani 2015a; Mirshamsi et al. 2016).
According to Mirshamsi et al. (2015), the total species diversity of Iranian spiders should be hardly
less than 1000 species. As a result of the four previous parts of this series, five families (Liocranidae,
Mimetidae, Mysmenidae, Miturgidae and Hahniidae), 35 genera and 120 species were recorded from
Iran for the first time (Zamani et al. 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017). Main goal of this paper is to provide
records for an additional number of 25 species which are new to the fauna of Iran, and raise the
number of spider species known from this country to 697. In addition, we have also provided new
provincial records for 103 species (Table).

ATERIAL AND
M
ETHODS
The materials treated in this paper were collected by the authors and their colleagues from different
provinces of Iran from 1996 till now. Species distribution is based on the information provided in
several databases and catalogues: viz., Mikhailov (2013), World Spider Catalog (2017) and other
sources. In order to recognize a new record status of the treated taxa, all the existing records were
checked upon the database compiled by Zamani et al. (2018).
The depositories of the studied specimens are as follows: Agricultural Zoology Museum of
Iran (AZMI), Zoological Museum of Ferdowsi University of Mashhad (ZMFUM), Zoological
Museum of Perm State University (ZMPSU), Zoological Museum of University of Tehran (ZUTC).

ONCLUSIONS
As a result of this paper, four genera (Brommella, Siwa, Trygetus and Turkozelotes) and 25 species of
spiders are recorded for the fauna of Iran for the first time and new provincial records are provided
for 103 species. Of the studied material, records for 11 species (Brommella falcigera, Evippa fortis,
Gnaphosa petrobia, Oxyopes sobrinus, Pellenes ostrinus, Plexippoides gestroi, Siwa atomaria, Theridion hermonense,
Zelotes zekharya, Zodarion lutipes, Zora manicata) represent the eastern- or southeasternmost limits of the
corresponding species’ range, those of the 10 species (Gnaphosa saurica, Haplodrassus ovtchinnikovi,
Hersiliola turcica, Minosiella intermedia, Phlegra cinereofasciata, Phlegra dunini, Titanoeca caucasica, Trachyzelotes
malkini, Trygetus jacksoni, Turkozelotes mirandus, Xysticus acerbus) represent the southernmost, and those
of the two species (Argiope ahngeri, Berlandina afghana) the western- or southwestern range limits. As a
result of this paper, the number spider species known from Iran is raised to 697 species of 277
genera.

New faunistic and taxonomic data are provided for 19 families of Iranian spiders. Stemonyphantes arta Esyunin et Zamani, sp. nov. (Linyphiidae) is described from a male and a female collected in the Zanjan Province. Five genera of the family Theridiidae (Pholcomma, Phoroncidia, Phycosoma, Rhomphaea and Rugathodes) and 21 species are recorded from Iran for the first time, and 119 new province records are provided for 51 species. Additionally, Megarctosa bamiana Roewer, 1960 (Lycosidae) is transferred to the genus Arctosa C.L. Koch, 1847. A mistake in the original description of Gnaphosa azerbaidzhanica Tuneva et Esyunin, 2003 (Gnaphosidae), namely a mismatch of the figures of this species with those of G. tigrina Simon, 1878, is discussed and corrected here. Considering the results presented in this paper, the total number of spiders recorded from Iran is raised to 888 species in 321 genera.

Thesis

Spiders (Araneae) are the largest order of Arachnida and the sixth most speciose order of Animalia, comprising more than 50,000 extant species as well as over 1,400 species known from fossils. Despite this immense diversity that has been estimated to comprise 120,000–200,000 species, our knowledge of their systematics and distribution remains rather incipient. While attempts to evaluate the diversity and distribution patterns of spiders have been made for the Neotropical and a few other faunas, most other regions remain historically neglected. The aim of this dissertation is to explore the systematics, diversity and distribution of spiders of Iran, a highly interesting region from a zoological and biogeographical point of view that unfortunately has been poorly investigated regarding its invertebrate fauna. For this purpose, I examined more than 9,000 specimens that were either collected during expeditions to numerous regions and ecosystems across the country or deposited in several natural history collections from around the world. As a result of these efforts, which were initiated in 2013 and mostly carried out in collaboration with researchers from various countries, a total of 11 genera and 147 species of Iranian spiders were described as new to science, and 419 taxa (i.e., 13 families, 87 genera and 319 species) were recorded in Iran for the first time. The total number of newly described and recorded species (i.e., 466 species) constitutes almost half (i.e., 49.83%) of the currently known Iranian species diversity of this group (i.e., 935 species). Amongst 147 species described, 137 are known only from Iran, representing 63.72% of all species currently considered endemic to this country (i.e., 215 species). These results were published in a total of 87 publications, 38 of which were published after the beginning of my doctoral studies at UTU in 2019. This dissertation, however, is primarily based on only nine taxonomic articles (i.e., I–IX), all published after 2019 and highlighting some of the more important findings. Because of the newly obtained taxonomic information and an extensive database of all published records, it was possible to conduct a comprehensive review of spatial variation in the diversity patterns of spiders in Iran. This was the main objective of publication X, which also included an evaluation of the effect of sampling bias on the current understanding of the distribution of Iranian spiders. The analyses showed that the diversity of Iranian spiders remains inadequately studied and is heavily affected by the Linnean shortfall (i.e., gaps in taxonomic knowledge), despite a remarkable improvement in taxonomic research on this fauna since the beginning of the 21st century. There are 935 spider species in the 1,648,195 km2 of Iran. Comparing the number of species per area of 171 countries and other political regions indicated that Iran was in position 132, whereas many considerably smaller and less ecologically diverse countries were in lower positions. It was also found that this fauna clearly suffers from a severe Wallacean shortfall (i.e., lack of knowledge of species distributions), as approximately 85% of Iran lacks a single record of spiders. There is a highly uneven distribution of records throughout the country and its provinces and ecoregions, with most of the records situated near large cities. A high correlation was found between the number of records of spiders and the number of records of plants and other animals in Iran, indicating that the noted shortfalls are indeed corroborated by other taxa. Finally, it is suggested that to gain a more complete picture of the diversity of Iranian spiders, future collecting efforts should be primarily in the form of extensive systematic surveys instead of opportunistic sampling, and ideally targeting lesser sampled areas and ecoregions. Once a satisfactory amount of information regarding the taxonomy and distribution of species becomes available, it will be possible to properly assess the conservation status and risk factors that affect these species and to identify areas of higher conservation and management priority.

New taxonomic considerations on several species of the zodariid spider subfamily Zodariinae Thorell, 1881 occurring in Azerbaijan, Iran, Afghanistan and Pakistan are presented. Three species, Trygetus cyrus sp. n. (♀; Fars, south-central Iran), T. nakhchivanicus sp. n. (♂; Nakhchivan, Azerbaijan) and Zodarion sharurensis sp. n. (♂♀; Nakhchivan, Azerbaijan) are described as new, and the hitherto unknown male of Trygetus susianus Zamani & Marusik, 2021 is described based on topotype material from Khuzestan, southwestern Iran. Indozodion Ovtchinnikov, 2006 stat. rev. is rediagnosed and removed from the synonymy of Tropizodium Jocqué & Churchill, 2005, and here considered to comprise I. inayatullahi Ovtchinnikov, 2006 comb. rev. (type species) and I. lindbergi (Roewer, 1960) comb. n. (ex. Zodarion Walckenaer, 1826); the latter species, previously known only from Afghanistan, is redescribed and reported from Pakistan. One of the paratypes of I. lindbergi, reported as a subadult female in the original description, is found to be an adult female of Parazodarion raddei (Simon, 1889). An error in a previous publication (attributing figures of Acanthinozodium elburzicum Zamani & Marusik, 2021 to P. raddei) is also corrected here.

New faunistic and taxonomic data are provided for 15 families of Iranian spiders. Two lycosid species, Alopecosa murphyorum sp. n. (♂, Semnan Province) and Alopecosa robertsi sp. n. (♂, Zanjan Province), are described as new to science. Nine species are recorded from Iran for the first time, and 182 new provincial records are provided for 53 species. Among new distributional data, the first confirmed record of the family Leptonetidae in Iran, representing its easternmost record in the West Palaearctic, is provided, as well as a redescription of the recently described Evippa amitaii Armiach Steinpress, Alderweireldt, Cohen, Chipman & Gavish-Regev, 2021 (Lycosidae), and illustrations for the examined type material of Evippa luteipalpis Roewer, 1955 (Lycosidae). Two species, Aulonia albimana (Walckenaer, 1805) (Lycosidae) and Tetragnatha javana (Thorell, 1890) (Tetragnathidae) are removed from the list of Iranian spiders, while Piratula insularis (Emerton, 1885) (Lycosidae) is removed from the list of Turkish spiders. Furthermore, Steatoda paykulliana (Walckenaer, 1806) (Theridiidae) is recorded from India for the first time. The newly described and some other species representing new country or provincial records are illustrated.

In this paper one family (Hahniidae), six genera (Cyrtophora, Hahnia, Lachesana, Megamyrmaekion, Nita and Zodarion) and 30 species are recorded for the fauna of Iran for the first time, of which, 17 species are provided with digital taxonomic illustrations. Previous Iranian records of Euryopis flavomaculata (C. L. Koch, 1836) and Evippa caucasica Marusik, Guseinov & Koponen, 2003 are attributed to Eu. sexalbomaculata (Lucas, 1846) and Ev. onager Simon, 1895, respectively, and the hitherto questionable presence of Enoplognatha iraqi Najim, Al-Hadlak & Seyyar, 2015 in this country is confirmed. In addition, new provincial records are provided for 46 species. As a result of this paper, the number spider species known from Iran is raised to 647. On the basis of the comparison between our specimen and the available illustrations in the literature, the previous records of Gnaphosa rufula (L. Koch, 1866) from Israel and Lebanon are attributed to G. bithynica Kulczyński, 1903, which is a new record for both territories. Lastly, Ev. sector Alderweireldt & Jocqué, 2017, recently described from UAE, is newly synonymized with Ev. fortis Roewer, 1955, and the holotype male of the latter is illustrated (which is also a new species record for UAE).

The taxonomy of the genus Spariolenus Simon, 1880 in Iran is revisited by describing three new species: Spariolenus fathpouri sp. n. (male & female) from Pebdeh cave ecosystem (Khuzestan Province), S. mansourii sp. n. (male and female) a more widespread species discovered in the Pataveh and Nezel Caves entrances (Kohgiluye-va-Buyer Ahmad Province), and S. hormozii sp. n. (female) from the Geno Biosphere Reserve (Hormozgan Province). Notes on the current status of the explored caves are given. The recently erected species, S. khoozestanus is redescribed based on the examination of the holotype and an additional diagnosis is provided. The Iranian plateau can be considered as the hotspot diversity for this genus in the world by hosting 8 out of 13 known species.

The taxonomic knowledge on the desert-dwelling sparassid genus Cebrennus Simon, 1880 in Iran is updated by describing a new species, Cebrennus rambodjavani sp. nov. (male) from northern Qom in Iran’s Central Desert, and reviewing the material of the previous Iranian record of the genus [sub C. kochi (O. Pickard-Cambridge, 1872)] from Bushehr, southern Iran, which is found to be a misidentification. A revised definition of the term “embolus kink”, a male copulatory structure in Cebrennus, is given. A comparative discussion of this structure between several representatives of the genus Cebrennus is included.

A checklist of linyphiids from Iran amounting to 67 species is given, based mostly on the extensive collections of A. Senglet and on available literature. Three species are described as new: Bolyphantes elburzensis sp. n., Erigonoplus zagros sp. n. and Sengletus latus sp. n. Twenty-six species are reported from Iran for the first time. The previously unknown male of Megalepthyphantes kuhitangensis (Tanasevitch, 1989), as well as the females of Araeoncus mitriformis Tanasevitch, 2008, Archaraeoncus altico-la Tanasevitch, 2008, and Tenuiphantes perseus (Helsdingen, 1977) are described. Two new synonyms and a new combination are proposed: Erigonoplus ayyildizi Tanasevitch, Topcu & Demir, 2005 syn. n. and E. galophilus Gnelitsa, 2007 syn. n. = E. spinifemuralis Dimitrov, 2003; Lepthyphantes sbordonii Brignoli, 1970 = Palliduphantes sbordonii (Brignoli, 1970) comb. n. All records of Tenuiphantes mengei (Kulczynski, 1887) in Iran and the East Caucasus actually can be attributed to Tenuiphantes perseus (Helsdngen, 1977). Synonymy of Collinsia O.P.-Cambridge, 1913 under Halorates Hull, 1911 is confirmed. A distribution pattern is indicated for each species. The localities of some species in Iran are mapped. The Iranian fauna is characterised by a high percentage of widespread species (50%), and a small percentage of European-Ancient Mediterranean (14%) and Eastern Ancient Mediterranean (7%) elements; 15% of the species are potentially Iranian endemics. The Caucasian-Iranian relations are weak and represented by five species. The Central Asian-Iranian relations are represented by three species. The relations between the Iranian and the Anatolian faunas are based on widespread species only.
